The Trailer for Ben Stiller's The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Doesn't Make You Want to Kill Yourself!

I don’t want to completely dismiss the possibility that a Ben Stiller studio comedy — a remake of a classic film, no less — might actually be good, but honestly, I think it’s the song: “Dirty Paws” by Of Monsters and Men, a band that’s actually just a remake of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes with a plumper lead singer. If you actually look at what’s going on beneath the music, and just imagine it in the context of an actual film, it looks more like what we’d expect a Ben Stiller film to look like. Not to be too skeptical, but a $100 million movie that has Adam Scott sporting THAT facial hair is not likely to have the same tone as the Monsters and Men song, not if they want to recoup their investment.

Still, great songs make great trailers but great trailers do not necessarily make great movies.

Update: Gah. Fox is pulling it, but you can still watch it at Apple.

I wonder if the closeup of the Zero Haliburton briefcase (1:06 in the trailer) is a a little nod to "Zero Effect." Even if it's not, it made me happy to think about that movie.

  • idiosynchronic

It's a Ben Stiller movie and I didn't automatically cringe.
    Looks gorgeous to boot.
I'm going to have one of those painfully sore glutes, boozy, regretful mornings again, aren't I?

  • clancys_daddy

You lost me at ben stiller.

  • Jim

I saw the trailer this past weekend - Jeezum crow he's lost a LOT of weight. Has he been ill or something? The trailer was a 1/3 over before I realized it was Stiller.

  • Jifaner

I loved this book so much as a kid...not sure I can deal with it being a Ben Stiller movie.

  • e jerry powell

A Ben Stiller remake. As a 1947 Danny Kaye movie...

  • I can't. I just...I can't even watch it.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of my absolute favorite movies. It's my 'life sucks so hard this is the only thing that will make me happy again' movie. Everyone I know in real life knows how much I adore that movie, so much so that when it was finally released on DVD, I ended up with multiple copies from multiple people.

So I just can't with all this bullshit.

I won't stop anyone else from watching and enjoying, but I will say this: watch the original.

  • Repo

Stiller generally excels when directing himself. I expect this to be no exception. Nice trailer.

    Hey Mr. Skeptical.

  • MikeRoorda

I feel like everything about what I just experienced was designed in a lab to touch the most number of feels possible in my demographic. I mean, it totally worked but, now I'm distrustful of whatever it is they're trying so hard to rope me in for.

(Which is actually just the cost of a movie ticket. The stakes are incredibly low.)

  • Wigamer

I cannot. Kristen Wiig AND Sean Penn.

  • Cazadora

I love it when something gives me new music. Downloaded Dirty Paws and then decided on the whole album. No Dad Rock for me.

  • TherecanbeonlyoneAdmin

Well, now I can add "liar" to the list of words I use to describe you. And we all know that every person in the band singing that song is wearing a scarf, skinny jeans and a knitted toque in the middle of summer.

  • TherecanbeonlyoneAdmin

And flannel. I forgot the flannel.

  • e jerry powell

    Layered flannel.

  • MauraFoley

    Link already down.

  • pajiba

Got another one up, but may be pulled soon, as well.

  • MauraFoley

Gaaah! I'll watch it before the evil internet content stealers yank it from my gaze.

  • Maguita NYC

    It looks good!!

  • Cazadora

Ditto. The Life Magazine angle gave this so much depth without really having to say much.

  • Maguita NYC

    Very much so!
It almost ruined it when he finally spoke at the end. Almost. But this looks promising. A much better and visually captivating underdog movie than Dodgeball.

    *Ducks head.

FUN FACT: Walter Mitty is based on a James Thurber short story. Dodgeball was written and directed by James Thurber's grandson.

  • Maguita NYC

FUN FACT: In the US, the film is promoted with the tagline "Grab life by the ball". In foreign markets such as the UK and Australia, this is changed to the more risqué "Grab life by the balls.

  • Maguita NYC

A pity vote! Thank you Dustin. I tried, I really really tried.

  • emmalita

    That is a fun fact.
