The Most Sought-After Project No One Wants to Do

The ever-evolving cast for The Tourist has gone through more changes than a Phillies pitching mound in a save situation. The film is about an American tourist who, on behalf of Interpol, goes undercover to entrap a former lover who’s a suspected global criminal. It’s already chewed through two directors, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, and, originally, Bharat Nalluri, both of whom left because of creative differences. Now, Alfonso Cuaron is circling the project, the first of several upgrades.
As far as the actress part is concerned, Charlize Theron was originally in the role, but last month Angelia Jolie took her place. Theron’s original co-lead was Tom Cruise, but he exited to make way for Avatar’s Sam Worthington, who has also now left the project.
Enter Johnny Depp. And, if the movie ever does get off the ground, we may get the biggest star pairing since, well, Jolie and Brad Pitt in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, another spy movie.
The project has had its share of screenwriters, as well. Julian Fellowes wrote the original, though since then, four others — including The Usual Suspects’ Christopher McQuarrie — have taken a pass. Why has such a troubled production drawn the interest from so many A-list princpals? Hell if I know, but if Depp does sign on, it would seem to put Pirates of the Caribbean 4 on hold, and who knows what will happen to The Lone Ranger. In either respect, this is something of a dream pairing, though — to be honest — they don’t seem particularly well suited to one another. But that’s where the actressin’ comes in, and as far as action-dramas go, you could hardly do better.
We shall see.
