Here are the week’s top 20 shows, in overall viewers:

1. (2) “American Idol” (Tuesday), Fox, 24.41 million viewers.
2. (1) “American Idol” (Wednesday), Fox, 24.34 million viewers.
3. (3) “Dancing With the Stars,” ABC, 20.48 million viewers.
4. (5) “NCIS,” CBS, 17.23 million viewers.
5. (8) “The Mentalist,” CBS, 16.96 million viewers.
6. (42) “ER,” NBC, 16.38 million viewers.
7. (X) Academy of Country Music Awards, CBS, 14.78 million viewers.
8. (4) “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” CBS, 14.63 million viewers.
9. (11) “Two and a Half Men,” CBS, 14.56 million viewers.
10. (X) CBS NCAA Basketball Semifinal, CBS, 14.45 million viewers.
11. (7) “Dancing With the Stars Results,” ABC, 13.51 million viewers.
12. (13) “CSI: Miami,” CBS, 13.46 million viewers.
13. (X) CBS NCAA Basketball Between Games Show, CBS, 12.95 million viewers.
14. (18) “Without a Trace,” CBS, 12.53 million viewers.
15. (18) “House,” Fox, 12.51 million viewers.
16. (9) “60 Minutes,” CBS, 12.27 million viewers.

18. (20) “24,” Fox, 11.26 million viewers.
19. (27) “Rules of Engagement,” CBS, 11.02 million viewers.
20. (X) “ER Retrospective,” NBC, 10.63 million viewers.

In addition to the top 20 (above), here are some more of this week’s rating notes:

Though it didn’t break the top three, CBS did have seven of the top ten scripted shows of the week. “ER” also managed to go out on top, sort of: It was the top scripted show of the week in the 18-49 demographic. That was good for the best drama series finale since “The X-Files” ended seven years ago. “Heroes” and “Chuck” continued to suffer mightily on Monday nights. The dastardly FOX overrun of “American Idol” last night actually helped “Fringe,” which won its timeslot among the 18-49 group, although it began the hour with 12 million viewers and ended it with 9.6 million. “The Osbournes Reloaded” debuted last week following “AI,” and scored only mediocre numbers. “Cupid” took a hit last night, dropping two million viewers in only its second week, scoring only 6.2 million viewers (on a Tuesday night? Them’s eventual cancellation numbers). Also, last week, “Life” (in its second to last ep of the season) ticked up sharply, getting its best ratings since early February (damn good show, too. I hope to hell they bring it back next year). Finally, Ms. Nosek will be happy to know that “Supernatural” had its best numbers in its key demo since 2006.

In a broader sense, however, the big four networks (CBS, ABC, NBC, and FOX) are down five to ten percent since last season, although overall television viewing has not dropped. The networks just lost all their viewers to cable.

Also worth noting: It’s official — “Pushing Daisies,” along with both “Dirty Sexy Money” and “Eli Stone” will burn off all their remaining episodes on Saturdays this summer, starting the last week of May.

If anyone’s curious about the DVD charts, Marley and Me debuted at number one on the sales chart, selling 65 percent more than the number two DVD, Slumdog Millionaire, which also debuted this week. After two weeks at number one, Twilight slipped to number 3.

I can't think of any larger indictment of the American public than that list.

The only person I've ever known to watch NCIS let slip this mortal coil a while back, so now I have no idea.

Posted by: the_wakeful at April 8, 2009 9:09 PM

Dammit, I'll admit it.
I watch 'NCIS' and kinda like it. True, I watch it online but I DO watch it because Mark Harmon and the rest of the cast have a nice chemistry, it's good to see that Ilya Kuryakin had a nice career after his days with "U.N.C.L.E." and I think that Pauley Perrette is a babe. Great acting and riveting plots? No. A bad way to pass and hour on a Tuesday? Not at all.
As to the rest of the list? Numbers 6, 18 & 20.

Life. Great to hear it’s doing a bit better ratings wise over there! I’ve seen a bit of The Mentalist (seriously, I can’t believe the show is pulling these kind of ratings with possibly the oddest title ever) and Life beats it hands down.

I don't see how you can complain about NCIS when AI is topping the charts. Sure it's not the greatest show on TV, but it's infinitely better than AI, and while I'm not a regular watcher I'll usually sit through it and enjoy it if it happens to be on when I'm not doing anything more interesting (about once every few months). I'll certainly take it over anything else on this list other than House.

I watch NCIS if I'm not doing something else, but it's not like I plan my schedule around it or pay rapt attention when it's on. It's background noise for me. I only have basic cable. I don't like American Idol, so in that time slot I'm left with Nova on PBS or NCIS. What I watch depends on how intellectually stimulated I want to be. All told though, I'd rather be watching Pushing Daisies.

I always wished that John Carter and me could be friends. He's not quite "I'd go gay" for him, but I would high-five that dude and share bromatic hugs with him.

DIE, networks, DIE!

Wow. We watch WAY too much TV, a really quite embarrassing amount of TV, and we have only watched one of those shows and I'm not sure we even saw that one this past week (60 Minutes).

I'm glad to see ER end, finally. This last season with all its past actors seemed to have dragged on forever.

This list makes me sick. The terrorists are winning.

The new Cupid inspired me to watch the old Cupid (which is all available on a site I like to call wooo!boob!) and, seriously, that was such and effing good show and this show does not hold a guttering, drippy disgustingly scented candle to it.

I'm amazed anyone at all is still watching 'Heroes'...

Posted by: figgy at April 9, 2009 2:12 AM

I'm not surprised Supernatural did so well last week - that episode was fucking hilarious! Taking on the Wincest fanfic was inspired.

I'm still watching Heroes. The triumph of hope over experience, I guess. Though it is marginally better lately, and Mama Petrelli is about to reveal a Big Secret, so I'm going to keep watching for that.

Hey! I watch NCIS, thank you very much. I like that show a lot more than Criminal Minds, Without A Trace, The Mentalist, Lie to Me, CSI, etc... it's a lot funnier (I give much of that credit to the chemistry of the cast) and makes for enjoyable background noise for laundry folding, mail sorting or dinner making.

Posted by: Stella at April 9, 2009 10:31 AM

I'm pretty happy to hear about Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone. I guess I'm slow, I hadn't realized they had episodes left to burn off, but glad they will show them.

I still watch Heroes. Eh... it's OK. I'm a little confused, but being a Lost watcher, I'm kinda used to that.

My mom watches NCIS. She's 64 years old. Old people got nothing better to do than stay at home and watch crap on TV. Crime shows, dancing shows, that's what the old people like to watch...

I watch CSI (the Vegas one, the others suck ass) and occasionally, House. Cable gets the rest of my viewership (for the most part). Esp. on the hour-long dramas.

AI gets that desirable 18-25 demo (among women, anyway, not sure how many men watch it), as long as it does that, it will triumph. I can't believe people still watch it, but... no accounting for taste.

Gotta give props to CBS. 10 years ago, they were in the ratings toilet, now they rule. In that sense, you really can't argue with success.

Posted by: Slash at April 9, 2009 11:07 AM

People are so fucking stupid. How is Lost not in the top 20? I know the show can be difficult to follow (if you're an idiot), but do yourself a favor, AMERICA, Netflix the first four seasons and catch the hell up.

Posted by: Kolby at April 9, 2009 11:33 AM

Sucks that Chuck & Heroes are doing so badly. I'm not home in time to watch Chuck, but it is competing with How I Met Your Mother, right? I would sooner watch the latter. Sorry, Chuck.

Heroes is very slowly, but steadily improving with Fuller's return. It's not perfect, but it's getting better.

I was underwhelmed by the ER finale. I wasn't expecting them to blow up the place, but because I didn't care about any of the new cast, their plots bored me to tears. The old cast was only there for 5 minutes and there were some unanswered questions, so I was disappointed. I was more moved by the retrospective than the episode itself.

Umm the economy is in the toilet and more people died in mass shootings than fighting in Iraq so far this year, why are the crime dramas doing so well and the awesome shows like HIMYM and 30 Rock not even placing in the top twenty?

I understand the idea of watching American Idol and that Dancing show as good mindless escapism (hell as the parent of a two year old those shows appeal to me because there is no plot for me to get frustrated at missing when we have toddler moment-still even I can't sit through the results shows -I am a parent not a zombie.)

The evening news fills my quota of sadness and death. Bring on Liz Lemon and whatever Amy Poehler's new character is named!
