The Facebook Movie Brings Sexy Back

Bring It On Down to ... Facebookville? / Dustin Rowles

The last few months, we’ve had a few scoffs at the notion of a movie based on Facebook. It sounds completely absurd, I know, and the fact that Aaron Sorkin wrote it and David Fincher is directing hasn’t really mellowed our titters. It sounds like something of a sell-out project for both, right?

It’s not.

I recently got a chance, actually, to read the script for The Social Network, and it is fucking brilliant. It is vintage Sorkin — smart, deadpan funny, and exceptionally compelling, and it’s right in Sorkin’s wheelhouse, because the movie is framed around a court case. There is a really fascinating backstory to the creation of Facebook that involved the theft of ideas and quite a bit of backstabbing. It actually makes you see Facebook in a different light.

Jessie Eisenberg has officially signed on as Mark Zuckerberg, the guy who basically created Facebook in his Harvard doom room. Andrew Garfield will play Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder who had a falling out with Zuckeberg over money. And Justin Timberlake will play Sean Parker, the co-founder of Napster, who had a much bigger role in Facebook than I was aware of. And believe it or not, Timberlake is perfect for the role as something of a nerdy Playboy, and Eisenberg — well, he’s who I pictured as Zuckberberg before I even knew he was cast. He’s perfect.

Really, honestly: It’s going to be a great movie, once you are able to put aside the notion that it’s “The Facebook Movie.” It’s not about the website; it’s about the relationship dynamics behind creating it.

I'll watch it as long as Denny Crane represents one of the defendents.

Sounds too good to be true. I'm skeptical, still.

Consider my skepticism tempered, but certainly not dispelled.

I lost a little faith in Fincher after Benjamin Button so we'll see.

Also someone tell him to stop directing those fucking Nike commercials.

What can I say? I am a compsci major, a dork of considerable degree, and I actually liked Pirates of Silicon Valley.

In other words, it is a definite rental at the least.

The last time this came up and everyone was chortling at it I and a few others defended the possibility, pointing to the book Soul Of A New Machine as the template. It doesn't surprise me in the least that this looks great.

Bah humbug!

Facebook is everything wrong with online society not connected to MMORPGs. And I'm not just saying that because I got chased off in the early years by cyberbullying before cyberbullying was legitimate terminology.

Take your food fights, pokes, and accidentally revealing status updates and leave me to my dummy accounts...

I mean, what's a dummy account? I'm not secretly participating in Facebook. How dare you? Stop looking at me!

I fucking hate social networking sites*, but this sounds really good. I don't have a Sorkin boner, but I know he can write, and Fincher gets a lifetime pass for Fight Club. I guess I just assumed a "movie based on Facebook" would be about people on Facebook , ya know, getting killed or something. I've read about the origins of Facebook and it's a very interesting story.

Lastly, I would appreciate it if everyone could refrain from comparing Eisenberg to Michael Cera is anyway at all. That is all.

* - It really is unfair to the sites. My first experience was an annoying friend of mine using my computer to look up Facebook shit when he visited.

This is taking No Whining Wednesday a little too far

Eh, I'll believe it when I see it. Sounds compelling enough until I remind myself it's based on Facebook. A website designed by Zuckerman in order to get laid.

Vermillion beat me to it - it was not perfect by any accounting, but Pirates of the Silicon Valley was pretty great. Anthony Michael Hall as Bill Gates? Golden. I'll admit, I like nerd fairy tales. I get all hot over idealists with abacuses/abaci. My button has been pushed.

All that matter is that Fincher is doing the remake of Heavy Metal...that is all.
