Award-winning and Emmy-nominated visual effects artist and writer/director Gareth Edwards premiered his first film, Monsters, at SXSW and distribution was picked up within hours by Magnet Releasing (a division of Magnolia Pictures). In the vein of District 9, Monsters is a picture of life with aliens, this time in Mexico along the United States border. The story picks up as an American journalist agrees to escort a tourist through the “infected” area of Mexico to safety (in America, of course. Quick, someone build a fence!). Edwards shot the film, which has been steadily gaining buzz, on an incredibly low budget; apparently only a fraction of a million dollars.

Here’s a fantastic featurette where Edwards explains how the film was made on the cheap:

Magnet has announced that Monsters will be released in New York and Los Angeles October 29, 2010.

I heard about this movie a while ago and I've anxiously been waiting for it's release. I think it's going to be as good as District 9, [REC], and Paranormal Activity.

As much as for the movie itself, I'm just as excited about how it was made. This is where the originality and innovation is going to come from over the next decade.

this looks cool and the short clip has only heightened my interest; it's great that young film makers with gumption can go out and make their movies regardless of the big studios. we need more of that cuz most studio movies suck
