Hi-Yo Silver! F**k Me

I don’t at all see the appeal of a movie based on The Lone Ranger. I really didn’t see the appeal in the television show. My tiny recollection of the show is that the really big deal about it was that no one knew the identity of The Lone Ranger, despite the fact that the mask was, you know, not exactly a full body disguise. Yet, the only way that Tonto — the Native American stereotype (“How!”) — could recognize him was the silver ring. Cause, you know — without that silver ring, who the fuck is that guy underneath that incredibly intricate mask? And that’s The Lone Ranger’s powers? He can shoot well. Wow. How thrilling.

Anyway, Jerry Bruckheimer has been pushing a movie version of The Lone Ranger for years, but it’s never really gained much traction, despite the fact that Johnny Depp is attached as Tonto (and, apparently, at one point, George Clooney was rumored to play The Lone Ranger, which is about as likely as me being mistaken for George Clooney (what? I am dashing).

It had been a quite couple of years, blissfully so, but now it appears that the goddamn project is moving ahead, as Justin Haythe, who adapted Revolutionary Road for the big screen, is negotiating to come aboard to script. Haythe had also penned a script for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which was deep-sixed a few months ago.

The thing about “The Lone Ranger” was that it was something of a kid’s show (now, I’m sure there was some more complexity to the radio program — no. I’m not so sure). And you know what? Kids expect more now than a dude with a gun and a tiny mask with a Native American sidekick, who would probably look like the Native American version of Jack Sparrow. Hell, it’s not just kids — I expect more from a super hero, or whatever it is that The Lone Ranger considers himself. If this thing is going to work, I think they’re going to have to develop a bigger back story, some decent mythology, and — you know — put some flame decals on the side of the horse or something. Otherwise, it’s just a dude in a thong mask hollering out “Hi-Yo Silver” like a goddamn Village Person while his sidekick sends up smoke signals and chants.

(Fun Fact: There was once a WB television film of “The Lone Ranger,” starring Chad Michael Murray. And you know what? The Lone Ranger is about Chad Michael Murray’s speed. Anyone see that?)

You know who'd be good for this?

That idiot who played "kirk" in that Star Trek parody from a while back. Get some rapper to play Tonto and hook the urban demographic.

Meh. I preferred "Zorro" and "The Cisco Kid". Class acts, those guys. A lot of my friends dug the Ranger but the show really was pretty lame. Can't imagine the movie being a big upgrade.

He shoots well. Which means bullets. Which mean bloody death from 30 yards. And then there are the racist overtones, which they will try to eliminate but people will still bitch about.

Sounds PG-13 to me. Just so long as nobody says, "Fuck" and they don't show any boobs.

Wait, why would I want to watch a movie like that?

"Tonto, go to town"

"You go to HELL, Kemosabe"

There was a movie about thirty years ago but I don't think it really took off.

You know what the Lone Ranger said to his sidekick don't you ?

'Onto Toronto pronto Tonto'

*snigger*

"OK, Tonto, there's 25 angry cowboys down there who want to raid the town. We're gonna charge in there and take them out, got it?"

"What's this we, Paleface?"

@Alex

I think you meant sni**er. John Mayer fan?

Posted by: ThunderSacTriumph at February 12, 2010 9:06 AM

He's gonna Brokeback Mountain Tonto, is my bet.

Posted by: Magiel at February 12, 2010 9:08 AM

So the Lone Ranger's sidekick will now be called Aboriginal American Man? I can see that.

Posted by: admin at February 12, 2010 9:21 AM

I think the term you want is mincing.

Ah, me. More evidence that we're imbedded in a terminal 20th-century cultural cul-de-sac. The only way I'd be interested in seeing this is if Marilyn Monroe plays The Lone Ranger and Elvis Presley plays Tonto.

@spender-Cisco Kid is my Favorite!

Some things were just better on radio:

Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy.
Gunsmoke with "Cannon" as the sheriff.
The Lone Ranger.

Posted by: BWeaves at February 12, 2010 10:52 AM

It was set in a time with gunpowder, so there can be explosions. Why wouldn't Bruckheimer be interested?

One of Gary Larson's Far Side cartoons shows an elderly Lone Ranger finally looking in an Native dictionary and discovering that "kemosabe" is "an Apache expression for a horse's rear end."

If you want to see a movie that screams for the MST3K treatment go watch 1981 bomb "The Legend of the Lone Ranger". Strangely enough it had a pretty decent cast apart from Klinton Spilsbury in the title role. Not only was his entire performance redubbed, but was the only role he ever did.

Interesting note is that the Green Hornet is a spin-off of the Lone Ranger. Britt Reid has been depicted at different times as nephew or grandson of the Lone Ranger's John Reid.

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a Tonto
'Cause Tonto did the dirty work for free
But Tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

Actually, the actor who played Tonto on the TV "Lone Ranger" was a Native American by the name (I think) of Jay Silverheels. He was easily the only credible Native American on '50's TV (most "Indian" parts being played by Italian-American B-movie actors smeared in brown shoe polish). Silverheels was given ludicrous scripts to work with, but he had a great voice and managed to bring presence to the role--unlike the rest of the cast.

"Tonto, go to town"

"You go to HELL, Kemosabe"

Posted by: Jay at February 12, 2010 8:49 AM

"You go to HELL, Mother Fucker"

Update complete, Samuel L. Jackson being cast as we speak.

"I think you meant sni**er. John Mayer fan?"

No, he probably actually meant "snigger," which is an alternate form of the word "snicker," and NOT a racial slur.

Need any other words defined while I'm here? Niggling? It means "trivial." Niggardly? It means "miserly." Those aren't racial slurs either, EVEN THOUGH THEY SHARE LETTERS WITH A RACIAL SLUR! ZOMG! IT TURNS OUT THE SAME LETTERS CAN BE USED IN DIFFERENT, UNRELATED WORDS!

I'm all about being a liberal, but Jesus, crack open a dictionary once in a while.

And if I had a pony, I'd ride him on my boat...

Why on earth would they get Johnny Depp to play Tonto...why not an actual native person? Unless, of course, no one wanted the part, but still...

"Kids expect more now than a dude with a gun and a tiny mask with a Native American sidekick"

What? You think Bruckheimer and Hollywood doesn't know that? That's exactly why 99% of all remakes or *yuck* reboots (what's that? the faux-pas word of the year? It's getting ridiculous) suck so much. Because they try to con-temporize it or to to re-envision it and then horrible fail.
Of course they wont do the Lone Ranger as he was back then (not that i care about the Line Ranger; fuck him). Why acting so naive?
