The Killer In Me Is The Killer In You

I don’t think we’ve reported anything on Michael Winterbottom’s upcoming The Killer Inside Me yet, which is sort of a surprise — at least for me. For those who haven’t read Jim Thompson’s novel, it’s a spectacular bit of noir fiction, a dirty, shocking, somewhat disturbing story about a small-town sheriff who’s a bit of a low-watt bulb, a folksy, dimwitted yokel who is… well… also a complete psychotic, a brilliant sociopath whose moron persona is all a front (he deliberately uses simplistic aphorisms just to annoy people). It’s a chilling account, told in the first person by the sheriff, Lou Ford. I didn’t bother with spoilers, since the title pretty much tells you what you need to know anyway.

Winterbottom (A MIghty Heart, 24 Hour Party People) has assembled an unusual cast — Casey Affleck as Ford, and co-starring Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba. Those two are odd choices, but Affleck has proven himself with his roles in Gone Baby Gone and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, so I’m excited about it. If it helps, Bill Pullman, Elias Koteas and Ned Beatty round out the cast. Slash Film has scored a number of cool items, including a couple of on-set pics (via The Playlist) and videos by the producer,

The author, Thompson, has written several excellent novels that have been adapted into brilliant films, including The Grifters, After Dark, My Sweet, and The Getaway. The Killer Inside Me has already been adapted once, by Burt Kennedy in the very good 1976 film that starred Stacy Keach. Winterbottom’s version is due out in 2010.

This was sounding so good until you said Kate Hudson AND Jessica Alba will be in it. I'm pretty sure that goes against the Geneva Conventions.

jM is totally right. Those two have the propensity to ruin even the best script...sigh.

Good pedigree on this. Of course, I'll forget it exists by the time 2010 gets here.

I can do without Jessica Alba but Kate Hudson's inclusion is not bad. I think she's a good actress that rarely strays outside her comfort zone. I caught "Fool's Gold" on Showtime a while back and was pretty impressed with her performance to be honest, even if the movie was lightweight. Pretty fun little caper movie too, perfect for Hangover Theater (which is why I was on the couch watching it if I remember right).

Wow. Someone heard me when I wondered where Elias Koteas got to. Now I know. Thanks!

my head has a habit of calling it the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert redford.

I'm all aquiver. I remember when I first became aware that there was a better Affleck out there (Ocean's Eleven), and I've loved everything he's done ever since.
I can't wait for this.

Damn, it all sounded so good until I got to Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson. I'll have to get over them though, as the story sounds intriguing and I really enjoy Casey, Ned and Bill.

That production did some shooting in Tulsa and other Oklahoma cities this summer, so it'll have that S. E. Hinton novelty vibe - tune in and see if any of this stuff looks any more interesting on film.

Sorry Fort Worth!

My feelings for Bill Pullman will never be the same after watching his horrid, horrid, HORRID OMG performance in 'Surveillance.' I mean, the movie was trash all around, but Bill was just ridiculous.

MC 900 Foot Jesus had a great song called, "Killer Inside Me," inspired by the same material. It's not without humor, but it's still a fairly creepy song.

Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm

For the record, Corgan is a whiny douche.

I can't believe you quoted a Smashing Pumpkins song TK. That hurt me man, that cut me deep. Now I'll have to go bang my head into the wall at least 300 times to get the annoying sound of his voice out of my fucking brain. Preciate it...asshole.

The whole...pretend to be a retard when you're actually a psycho. Doesn't that sound like Primal Fear?

Posted by: Deistbrawler at September 2, 2009 6:15 PM

DeistBrawler:

1) I'm not thrilled about using Pumpkins either, but seriously, the lyric just fit too perfectly.

2) Yes, it does sound like Primal Fear. Except that Thompson's novel was written in 1952, so it's more like Primal Fear sounds like The Killer Inside Me. In any event, other than the fake-retard thing, they're radically different. I highly recommend reading the book.

I am very excited to see this film. I love twisted, chilling stories. Of course I can't wait to see this one as my daughter is in the movie. I don't think she will be able to watch it though.
