This is a funny little combination: Robert Downey, Jr. starring in a drama from a guy (David Dobkin) best known for his comedies (Wedding Crashers, The Change-Up). It’s hard to escape, in the beginning, the feeling that The Judge is something akin to a grown-up Garden State: A sleazy big-city lawyer loses one parent and has to return home and reconnects with the other parent (Robert Duvall), only the connection process is churned through a murder trial, when Downey’s character has to defend his Dad (a long-time judge) after he allegedly runs someone over.

It’s an October film, which seems just right: Not quite an awards season contender, but definitely in the feel-good drama vein.
