The 'Hasbro Cinematic Universe' Is a Thing That's Happening, But Shockingly, It Might Not Be As Terrible As That Sounds

While The Lego Movie set the stage for all manner of future surprises out of silly properties, hearing the words “Hasbro movie” hits most of us right in the gag reflex. Add to that the announcement that there aren’t just going to be movies based on the company’s toys and games, but that they’re going full Marvel with a whole interconnected cinematic universe, and it’s hard not to think that this industry has jumped every single shark they’ve laid out. This means G.I. Joe exists in the same world as the Micronauts (for example), with potential for crossovers and Avengers-style teams. I know we’ve been surprised before, but it just seems hard to believe this is going to be anything resembling what we might call ‘good.’

And then today, Hasbro (working with Paramount) announced their dream team of a writer’s room, and holy hell how is this even possible. Between them, the writers on this team possess an Oscar, a Pulitzer, a Bradbury, and an Eisner Award.

That is… confusing. And exciting. And then confusing again because suddenly I’m excited for a Hasbro Cinematic Universe? THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE.

Overseeing the writer’s room will be Akiva Goldsman, who has written a LOT of total shit (all the Transformers movies, Winter’s Tale, Batman & Robin), but also wrote A Beautiful Mind and Fringe. The most impressing and surprising writers here are Michael Chabon (Kavalier & Clay, a million other things) and Brian K. Vaughn (Y: The Last Man, Saga, also like a million brilliant things). I think I would watch or read literally anything these two did together. Micronauts movies happily included.

The other writers make up an impressive team as well. They’ve got Cheo Coker (the showrunner on Luke Cage), Joe Robert Cole (he wrote on The People v OJ Simpson and is doing the Black Panther script), Nicole Perlman (from a little thing called Guardians of the Galaxy, who’s also attached to Captain Marvel), John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (lots of perfectly serviceable properties, plus the next Spider-Man movie), Jeff Pinkner (a longtime Brian K. Vaughn collaborator), and three other mostly unknown female writers (Geneva Robertson, Lindsey Beer, and Nicole Riegel).

That’s one hell of a dream team. I guess the HCU is something we have to be excited about now?
