Take out any award or mention of television's top rated sitcom, "Big Bang Theory," and the relatively new outfit, the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (a spin-off of the Broadcast Film Critics Association) picks the best winners, which is to say, many of their winners this year are the very people -- like Michael Cudlitz, Eden Sher, and Tatiana Maslany -- we all want the Emmys to choose, but assume they will not. But then some of the choices are real head-scratchers, but you know what? All is forgiven for giving Patton Oswalt best guest performer for "Parks and Rec."

BEST ACTRESS IN A DRAMA SERIES

Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) - BBC America

BEST ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) - AMC

These choices made me smile. On a really bad day, reading this almost made up for the near horror of the start of my day.

  • dizzylucy

Really happy for Cudlitz - Southland was always ignored by the awards, and the performances were always so good, his especially.
Also really happy for Tatiana- I hope her work on the show continues to gain more attention and more people watch. She's amazing, plus it's a very entertaining show.

  • Because I was there

Patton's speech was super classy. He felt that the award should've gone to Molly Shannon and offered to have her name engraved onto the statue. That I can appreciate and shows a true sign of a classy winner.

  • Aww, they found a way to honor Bunheads.

  • foolsage

Bunheads was a great little show. It's horrible that it's been in limbo now for 6 months.

  • I just want a cute show that I can talk about with my mom! Yes, we still have Parenthood but at least Bunheads isn't scientifically engineered to make me cry at least once per episode.

  • This is a pretty good list, save for the win by Jane Fonda rather than Jim Beaver for his portrayal of Shelby in Justified. I watch both shows, and while Fonda was good at chewing scenery, almost nothing compares to the look of terror and resignation when Shelby hears the helicopter coming for him. I prefer subtlety, I guess.

  • StellaOliver

    Yeah for Michael Cudlitz.

  • John W

    Impressive list.

  • Gigi Agius

So glad Elisabeth Moss got some recognition for Top of the Lake!!!

  • Really like some of these (Potter, JLD) a lot. Others (BBT, AHS) much less so.

  • TheOtherGreg

Could it be that people who hate on The Big Bang Theory are the ones with their heads up their asses? (I know, multi camera, laughtrack, blah blah. Let the downvotes begin)

  • Milly

It laughs AT the characters, and not WITH them.

That being said, I used to watch it as a matter of course, and still do as it occupies the 20 minutes it takes to eat my chippy on a friday night before going out on the lash.

But, the episode where Leonard confronted his high school bully was one of the worst, and most gob-smackingly awful episdoes of tv out there. It ended on the person who had been traumatised, and struggled to deal with it being traumatised again for doing nothing other than trying to help his former bully. Cue canned laughter and end credits. Fucking pitiful.

  • logan

I second that brother. This place has it faves and that's it there can be no change in dogma.

  • Could it be that some people really don't find poorly written jokes about nerd/geek stereotypes something entertaining? Cause that's my big problem with the show. The cast is strong but the writing is terrible.

That's not even getting into the nerdface angle that's borders on the offensive.

But no, it's just that I have my head up my ass and can't appreciate a multi-camera laughtrack sitcom like the ones I grew up watching.

  • Captain D

My counter argument is Wil Wheaton guest stars on TBBT frequently. I think he (and many of us) would agree the writing and humor are at least a little better than you suggest. Also, the stereotypes are there in every comedy. TBBT has toned down some and played up others. I don't like / agree with all of their choices.

  • logan

True. The characters have actually evolved and changed over the course of the show. The show has also been very good at adding characters which is not easy to do.

  • Bert_McGurt

Agreed. The writing process appears to involve little more than a something-search of "Stuff Nerds Like" transposed into half-a**ed dialogue.

  • IngridToday

I wouldn't have a problem with Big Bang if it weren't for the fact it always wins all the awards... for no real reason. It's an alright show, but it's not great.

  • dizzylucy

I think this is what bugs me about it too.
I have a bunch of friends who love it, and were recently telling me I HAVE to watch it (I just smile and nod).
Some people obviously love it and find it hilarious. From what I've
seen, I am not one of those people and find it annoying when it wins a
lot of awards over shows that, in my opinion, are better all around. But if others enjoy it, great.

  • apsutter

Yup, its just an alright show yet it consistently beats out show like Parks and Rec which is just fucking crazy.

  • Repo

It's super hip to trash BBT here, but laugh track debates aside, I firmly believe Jim Parsons deserves his accolades. I could take or leave the rest but his work is fantastic.

  • koko temur

FUCK YEAH for tatiana maslany. Girl gives 3-4 best performances currently on tv PER EPISODE.

Also Moss was amazing in Top of the lake, very deserving, as well as Cudlitz on Southland and Archer. Well done, everyone.

  • space_oddity

I just finished watching Orphan Black last night and WOW yeah. She deserves all the awards.

  • AudioSuede

    BOOM! Louie'd!

  • TheOtherGreg

While I admire what Louie CK is doing with the show, he doesn't really do what I would call 'acting'.
