The Closest Tyler Perry Will Ever Come to an Oscar Nomination

Despite all my efforts and communal trumpeting, not a single one of the colored girls from For Colored Girls was nominated for an Academy Award. I really kind of had high hopes for them, until I saw every other movie that came out from pretty much September onward. So Tyler Perry will do what he does best — ruin other franchises, anger the gods of snow and storm, and make more Madea movies.

The latest Madea film is actually based on one of Tyler Perry’s original plays, Madea’s Big Happy Family — you know the ones that they used to run ads for on my local Philadelphia channels back in the day. Perry actually released a video version of the stage production last year, but now he’s gonna make a movie. At least Loretta Devine will get some much deserved work. And so will Shad “Lil Bow Wow” Moss. Because—

Shad? SHAD? *arrrrooooo?*

Shad?

In an effort to draw people’s attention to the film, Lionsgate and Perry have been redoing Oscar nominated posters. I’ve seen one for The Godmother ala Mario Puzo black and white style with Madea’s head on them. In fact, all of the posters have Madea’s heads on them. And the latest batch are for “The Real Black Swan” and “True Grits” and “The Queen’s Speech”. Here they are for you.

There are ten nominees so can we expect seven more?

There’s a time and place for Tyler Perry, and at least this time, he’s doing Madea which is what he does best. I think of all the Oscar nominees 127 Hours is the best approximation. Because when I watch one of his movies, it feels like it takes that long to get through it, and by the end, I’ll want to chew through my arm to free myself.

Shad?

The Black Swan one is funny. Search your heart. You know it to be true.

Look, if this movie doesn't star Grandpa Freeman as Madea's love interest, I'm going to call the NAACP.

Shad? SHAD? *arrrrooooo?*

Exactly! How is that supposed to be better?!

Yeah, it's good that Loretta Devine is getting work somewhere. Even if the catch is that it's in Perry's movies. And, I agree with Mrs. Julien. The Black Swan poster is the only one that does anything for me. I'm sure it was fun for his marketing department, but I'm still not seeing his shitty movies.

"Uppity", huh?

Funniest shit I have seen all day.

Prisco, you and your brethren never fail to play the Dr. King legacy card when it comes to Tyler Perry. The mere fact that you would label Perry the antithesis of King tells me you haven‘t the foggiest idea about King or Perry save for what you‘ve learned during black history month. Of course guns, drugs, high unemployment, poorly administered social services, and a crumbling school system have not stop African Americans from reaching the top of society. But somehow in your eyes a guy in a dress will bring the African American community to its knees, glad you have faith in us.

Let me let you in on a little secret Prisco, the same African Americans that loved “The Wire” also love watching Tyler Perry movies. That concept might be hard for you to understand but African Americans are a somewhat complex group of people. Now if you want to label Tyler Perry films shitty, be my guest, I didn’t particularly enjoy every movies he has made. But please don’t use Dr. King’s legacy as a prop to help you denounce Tyler Perry.

^Is this being sarcastic? Am I missing some subtext from the column? or did you pull that out of your pre-written Tyler Perry rants?

Um, effing wrong, Pookie, says the effing African-American who is planning to utterly ruin Tyler Perry before pushing him into a vat of sodium hydroxide.

You couldn't pay me enough to see Madea unless she was wearing a ball gag and being flogged to within an inch of her life while chained upside-down to a St. Andrew's cross.

And I had no problem with either The Wire or its spinoff, Damages.

No e, this is my comment about the column that Prisco wrote before he edited it. And in that column he mentions Dr. King. I guess Prisco had reservations about his original column and quickly changed it.

Ok, that makes more sense, please excuse the last line of my comment.

...and I see Prisco's removed "uppity" as his descriptive term for some of Perry's characters, too (RE my first comment)...

This is why you edit BEFORE you post, Prisco. No one likes to see Pookie having a legitimate point.
