The 50 Greatest Animated Films of All Time

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Trade News | Comments (54)

toy-story.jpg

Time Out Magazine has seen the light — after putting together the best 50 debut movies for a director a few weeks ago, the magazine has started to see the value of lists — it’s only a matter of time before they, too, start ranking the hottest serial killers (I can’t help it, myself: Lists are like opiate-fueled hate sex: Random, delusional, messy, and really fucking satisfying).

People love lists. They love to bitch about lists. They love to complain about the omissions, which is why — in my opinion — the best lists necessarily cut off some of the better options. It gives folks something to get pissed off about, which is why — if there are 50 Great Animated Films, you should only do a list of 25, otherwise the only feedback you’re going to get is “Nice list!” I prefer: “Good list, but you forgot _____, you fucking asshole. What the fuck were you thinking? Why don’t you do a little more research next time, you Pajibadonk!”

All of which is to say: Complete, fully comprehensive lists are boring, and when your list of the best animated movies is comprehensive enough to include Transformers: The Movie, then you’re weak-willed Pajina, afraid of negative feedback or alienating readers (and see what I did there? I called Transformers: The Movie unworthy of belonging on a list of best anything. Cue the verbal spitballs from alienated readers in 3 … 2 … 1).

Anyway, I’m not going to give you all 50. That’d be a dick move, and give you no reason to go visit Time Out. I’ll offer up the Top 20. And then you can complain about what’s missing. Of course, if you go check Time Out, the missing movie is probably somewhere in the Top 50, which just leaves you with: “But … but … it should’ve been higher,” which is nowhere near as fun as, “But you forgot _________, asshole.”

1. My Neighbour Totoro (1988) Hayao Miyazaki
2. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) David Hand
3. The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie (1979) Chuck Jones and Phil Monroe
4. Fantasia (1940)
5. Toy Story (1995) John Lasseter
6. Spirited Away (2001) Hayao Miyazaki
7. Yellow Submarine (1968) George Dunning
8. Belleville Rendez-vouz (2003) Sylvain Chomet
9. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) Trey Parker
10. Robin Hood (1973) Wolfgang Reitherman
11. Bambi (1942) David Hand
12. Grave of the Fireflies (1988) Isao Takahata
13. Dumbo (1941) Ben Sharpsteen
14. Gandahar (1988) René Laloux
15. The Iron Giant (1999) Brad Bird
16. Akira (1988) Katsuhiro Ôtomo
17. The Brave Little Toaster (1987) Jerry Rees
18. The Jungle Book (1967) Wolfgang Reitherman
19. When the Wind Blows (1988) Jimmy T Murakami
20. Pinocchio (1940) Hamilton Luske & Ben Sharpsteen

You see what I’m saying? That’s a predictable, safe list (save for, perhaps, the inclusion of South Park). Those aren’t the best animated movies — they’re the most influential. Or groundbreaking. Fantasia was dullsville. Pretty: But man, try sticking a kid in front of that movie: Jitter city. Also, Toy Story 2 was better than Toy Story (although the original, obviously, was more influential). The Iron Giant should’ve been much higher and Robin Hood bores me to tears. That was a list carefully put together to upset the fewest amount of people. Period.

"Safe"? Even within the context of vanillatude, Aladdin is an obvious omission.

I suspect the creator(s) of this list have used the word "towelhead" a few more times than most would be comfortable with.

Posted by: Eep at October 8, 2009 11:08 AM

But you forgot Kirokou and the Sorceress, Asshole.

oh wait...
there it is at number 32

But … but … it should’ve been higher.

Posted by: missh at October 8, 2009 11:13 AM

Also, I love the "Terry Gilliam says..." notes at the end of some of the entries!

Posted by: missh at October 8, 2009 11:15 AM

Huh.

Beauty and the Beast didn't make the list? The whole fucking list??? This list is most certainly not safe from my shank.

But ohmygodhey! Brave Little Toaster love is always good.

Posted by: Kayanne at October 8, 2009 11:19 AM

I hate 'best' lists. The only thing they're good for is searching for anything I somehow overlooked the first time.

Totoro vs Toy Story vs Iron Giant? Please. Each of them is excellent in its own way.

Also, Millennium Actress is far and away better than Paprika. Bafflingly, glaringly obviously better.

Posted by: twig at October 8, 2009 11:19 AM

Still no Beauty and the Beast?

Really?

REALLY?

IT WAS NOMINATED FOR BEST FUCKING PICTURE AND HAPPENS TO BE VISUALLY STUNNING!!!!

GAH!!! *throws up hands and storms out*

Posted by: Kayanne at October 8, 2009 11:22 AM

Totoro? Over Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke?

Shennanigans, I say! Shennanigans!

Posted by: Jim at October 8, 2009 11:27 AM

Watership Down at 25. It cuts, it cuts deep into my black, little heart. How I have wept for those furry little fuckers. How I have wept.

Posted by: TSF at October 8, 2009 11:39 AM

I fucking HATE Pinocchio and Dumbo.

Posted by: Julie at October 8, 2009 11:40 AM

I love that "Totoro" is #1 and that "The Iron Giant" made the top 20.. But no "Ghost in the Shell?!" That's a travesty.

Posted by: penelope at October 8, 2009 11:45 AM

You make both Dumbo's mother and Robert Stack cry, Julie.

Posted by: Jay at October 8, 2009 11:45 AM

What the hell, assholes!? No Sleeping Beauty?! Only my frigging favorite Disney animation ever, with the best villain ever! Maleficent turned into a GIANT PURPLE DRAGON, FOR FUCK'S SAKE! Plus, that amazing headpiece-thing she had. AWESOME.

...oh. It's at # 47, you say. Well. Fine then.

In that case, I'm off to get some opiate-fueled hate sex, because that sounds fantastic.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at October 8, 2009 11:49 AM

Oh, sad story! I have that Fritz the Cat movie on DVD, but I loaned it to one of my asshole friends, who apparently decided to use it as a coaster and/or a frisbee. It's all scratched to shit now, and unplayable. Sad! That was the last time I loaned a DVD to her.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverpuppet at October 8, 2009 11:52 AM

Does anyone else find it ironic that they preface their article by saying that they were inspired by Up and the stop-motion feature Fantastic Mr. Fox and yet there is a glaring omission of Up or any stop motion animation feature. No Coraline, no Nightmare before Christmas, no Wallace and fricking Gromit.

Wah. Dah. Ehf.

Time Out, you and me are fucking done professionally.

Posted by: Kayanne at October 8, 2009 11:55 AM

I wouldn't call any list that puts a Japanese movie at #1 "safe."

Posted by: Todd at October 8, 2009 12:03 PM

Snow White deserves #1. Have you seen it lately? It's still amazing.

Posted by: BWeaves at October 8, 2009 12:03 PM

I take it that few of us went to the link and read the rest of the list, seeing as no one's mentioned that Beavis and Butt-head Do America is #35.

Posted by: branded at October 8, 2009 12:04 PM

But you forgot Millennium Actress, asshole.

Haha, but I am happy to see that Satoshi Kon did get some love. And Totoro totally deserves the honor - that movie totally defined my worldview as a child. But really, the top 20 needs more Up and (even) more Miyazaki.

Posted by: Royalewithcheese at October 8, 2009 12:05 PM

And reading the rest of the comments, I totally agree with Kayanne. Needs more Nick Park and Henry Selick.

Posted by: Royalewithcheese at October 8, 2009 12:08 PM

You can't have a list like this and not include Beauty and the Beast. It's just criminal.

I love Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but one of the best animated films of all time?

Posted by: Brie at October 8, 2009 12:11 PM

Glad to see some Anime love on the list, but I really loved some of the bottom end movies on the list. Fern Gully stills gets quoted in my house.

"Puff up! They hate that!"

Posted by: Xtreme at October 8, 2009 12:11 PM

The Lion King not in the top 20? Nope. Instant fail. And FUCK Snow White. I truly hate that movie. Her voice makes me want to mute the whole damn thing. Sleeping Beauty was far better.

Posted by: TylerDFC at October 8, 2009 12:24 PM

Robin Hood? Really? Like, the one with Robin as a fox and Little John as a bear? Don't get me wrong I LOVE that movie. But one of the greatest of all time?

Posted by: Jeni at October 8, 2009 12:30 PM

I honestly think this list is pretty solid as-is. Totoro is the only Miyazaki film that I haven't seen, but I don't doubt it shouldn't be there based on all his other works.

And Toy Story 2 is NOT better than Toy Story, and I will dispute ANYONE who says otherwise.

Posted by: Colin at October 8, 2009 12:31 PM

JEH-SEE

Posted by: Jay at October 8, 2009 12:37 PM

I called Transformers: The Movie unworthy of belonging on a list of best anything.

But, but, but...

YOU'VE GOT THE TOUCH!

YOU'VE GOT THE POWER!

Posted by: Snath at October 8, 2009 1:17 PM

.......YEAH!!

Posted by: Jay at October 8, 2009 1:28 PM

Spirited Away is magic and beauty and everything any child or adult could ever want - the best on the list -----

Posted by: m bolton at October 8, 2009 1:37 PM

No Bebop or Samurai Champloo... you know, you probably shouldn't make one of those best lists and involve anime when it's obvious that you haven't seen much anime other than 'the usual'.

Posted by: Vi at October 8, 2009 1:52 PM

No American Pop? Did no one else see that movie?

-Ralphie

Posted by: Ralphie at October 8, 2009 1:59 PM

How are people not more outraged over the whole no-love for stop motion? Seriously, those movies boggle the mind with their intricacy and attention to detail.

AND OH MY GOD WHAT THE HELL!?! How are people not more outraged about Beauty and the Beast??

THERE WAS A DOGGOMAN FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!

Posted by: Kayanne at October 8, 2009 2:15 PM

Kayanne, Nightmare and Coraline are #22 however the omittence of UP! is an offense punishable by death.

Happy Feet? Give me a fucking break.

Posted by: admin at October 8, 2009 2:19 PM

I'll get back to the actual content of the list, but I must first object to the use of the neologism "pajina" as a derogatory term. Let's do the math, kids:

Pajiba + Vagina= ONE HUNDRED PERCENT PURE COLUMBIAN AWESOME.

"Pajina" by its very etymology must only be used to describe that which is fuckin' sweet. "Weak-willed pajina" is the most massive contradiction in terms I have ever heard.

Unless you misspelled and meant to say the Spanish word for "page," in which case, I'm totally behind on the cool-kidz lingo of the moment. (And I'm also glad I'm not in grade school, as "Page" is one of my actual names. It would be like growing up with a name like "Melissa Poindexter" or "Sam Douche [pronounced "doo-SHAY"].

Anyhoodle, "Pajasshole" is the more appropriate term, as it not only describes assholery on or about this site but also someone who thinks they are witty, urbane and erudite but is actually just full of shit.

Add this to "Pajonk-ajonk" et al. Carry on, pajinas, carry on.

Thank God. I kept having to scroll over that section because the girl in the picture before it had koi swimming allover her face looked like glass shards jammed into her skin. It gave me the willies.

Can someone please explain the Antz/Bug's Life love? I really remember both of those movies being meh. Like so meh it was pathetic.

Posted by: Kayanne at October 8, 2009 2:49 PM

I approve of most of this list, particularly Fantasia at #4, which has got to be the single greatest and most effective non-institutional tool for music appreciation the world has yet seen. The marriage of classical masterpieces to unique animated art that was inspired by the music (if not a direct interpretation of the composer's original ideas) was and remains a revolutionary idea. I might switch it with Fantasia 2000 on this list, just because I think that one is a little more exciting.

However, Dumbo at 13 gives me pause. Dumbo is an okay movie, and I'm guessing it's included here because of the hallucination scene, which I'm guessing represented revolutionary animation (and is still jarringly surreal and adult for a kids' film). Dumbo is to classic Disney films as Cars is to current Pixar films: it's good, but it doesn't hold a candle to most of the rest of the library: Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, the Jungle Book. Obligatory mention of the crows and racial stereotypes.

Just one little Cat's opinion, of course.

Posted by: Cat at October 8, 2009 2:55 PM

I'm with you, Colin. The original Toy Story is the best, although No. 2 could stand on its own merits and wholly without the "sequel" stink that most sequels have.

Posted by: Cat at October 8, 2009 3:17 PM

now i've got "you've got the touch, you've got the power" stuck in my head.

and not in a good way.

not in a good way at all.

plus i just burnt my tongue on some pastry filling.

your fault, snath. somehow, it's ALL you fault!

Posted by: gp at October 8, 2009 4:07 PM

Vi

Samurai Champloo is not a film, and the Bebop movie, while superlative, really required tandem viewing with the show to be at its best.

Posted by: twig at October 8, 2009 4:08 PM

also, hold the phone: toy story 2 was THE SHIT!

if toy story 3 is half as good as the 2nd, i'll be happy (even though that equation didn't work with shrek)...

Posted by: gp at October 8, 2009 4:10 PM

toy story 2 is the best example in movies of a sequel beating the original, though i reckon they both belong in the top 20. and in fact, there should be a lot more pixar in there in general; wall-e at least, probably ratatouille.

also, no love for hedgehog in the fog?

Posted by: scarecrowprophet at October 8, 2009 4:24 PM

Can I nominate Cat for next week's EE? 'Cause that vagina bit was fantarshtick.

Posted by: Lauren at October 8, 2009 4:40 PM

"robin hood"!!!!! what the fuck!! that movie is a complete and total rip-off of jungle book. i'm not saying it's a bad movie, but in the top 20, before jungle book even! my brother who is an animator even mentioned once that robin hood is a throw away movie by disney. walt had already died (jungle books was his last) and the studio was just trying to put something out there. that alone kind of makes this list crap.

Posted by: maxpurr9 at October 8, 2009 4:43 PM

"yellow submarine" in there, is cool.

Posted by: maxpurr9 at October 8, 2009 4:47 PM

Kayanne, I hear ya on the stop-animation. And Cat, I second the Fantasia love.

But how the HELL did Robin Hood make the cut, let alone the top 10, while neither Beauty & the Beast nor The Lion King made the list? Shenaningans!

And no love for Tokyo Godfathers? That makes me sad.

But I'm happy to see that The Triplets of Belleville is in the top 10.

Lists like this just remind me how many movies I need to catch up on. I have GOT to watch Miyazaki's movies!

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at October 8, 2009 5:24 PM

Rowles have I forgotten what Pajiba means? Not to wreck the party if it's supposed to be a secret, or maybe I just look like an idiot, but "Pajina" seems kind of circular to me.

Posted by: Eep at October 8, 2009 5:43 PM

Why is Grave of the Fireflies so low down on that list? Ditto Watership Down. While I love a lot of the top films, I'll take thought-provoking over cute-and-fluffy any day of the week.

Posted by: Minty at October 8, 2009 6:23 PM

I'm not sure what they're trying to accomplish with that list, or what their criteria is. 'Antz' and 'A Bug's Life' share a spot, then the accompanying article explains how much better a ABL is. And 'Nightmare Before Christmas' and 'Coraline' are forced to share a spot, seemingly only because they share a director. By that logic, shouldn't ALL Miyazaki films occupy only one spot? Or 'Ratatouille', 'The Incredibles' and 'Iron Giant'?

Also: I'm not sure I want to live in a world where 'Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie For Theatres' is considered a better film that 'The Lion King' or 'Finding Nemo'.

The Last Unicorn

Posted by: arrrghzi at October 9, 2009 5:08 AM

I don't agree with a lot of this list, but I am gleeful that I now have the "TOtoro, ToTOro!" song stuck in my head. That has considerably cheered up my Friday.

Posted by: embertine at October 9, 2009 10:12 AM

Um, Totoro is kind of cute, and that's it. The greatest animated film of all time is such a long stretch that it's not even funny. While I'm glad they included The Triplets of Belleville on the list, it stands out farther in my head than Totoro ever has. So boo on them.
And hello, what about The Great Mouse Detective? Quality Disney film, in my humble opinion.

Posted by: Kamikaze Feminist at October 9, 2009 10:58 PM

Why all the Robin Hood hate? Best Disney movie EVER!!!

Posted by: Eileen at October 10, 2009 12:47 AM

Hey now, I've loved Fantasia since I was, like, four. Night on Bald Mountain was probably my favorite animated passage of any film, and most likely still is. Boring, my ass!

...Except for Sorcerer's Apprentice. That shit might be classic, but I have hated it since day one. Mickey was a dumbass. I insisted on skipping that scene every time I watched the movie.

Posted by: kalexal at October 10, 2009 10:21 AM

Dustin, "Grave of the Fireflies" has been the only animated movie that literally tore my heart out of my chest, shredded it to little pieces and left me in such a state of sadness and despair that I have yet to ever even think about seeing it after I saw it.

It should be number 1, Rowles. There's no way it can't be number 1.

And for anyone who tries to tell me "oh, you mean like in that scene in 'The Lion King' where Simba gets all up under Mufasa's paw and tells him daddy wake up" I say to ye: that shit was kids play next to "Grave of the Fireflies."

If you haven't seen it, watch it and I dare you to tell me you could sit through it again.

The animation was gorgeous, the subject matter tragic and it was heartwrenching in a way that was not at all manipulative.

I'm reaching for the tissue box just thinking about it now.

Posted by: smijca at October 10, 2009 4:50 PM

That list is ok, gets points for Paprika, Perfect Blue and Nightmare Before Christmas. There are too many Disney films though, animated films aren't just for kids. End of Evangelion is better than anything on there.
