The 5 Biggest Non-Stories on the Biggest Blockbusters in Development

Sometimes, I’m having so much fun doing goofy stuff on the site that I forget that we’re supposed to be tracking movies news, too. And then I look around and notice that, like daytime soap operas, trade news is something you can miss for long stretches of time and, when you return, nothing’s really changed. I could keep you updated on all the tiny little micro-developments on every major blockbuster in development, or I could confuse your libido (seriously, they will give any jackass a movie blog these days).

But, I suppose it’s worth checking in on occasion to keep you apprised of a lot of major developments that, at the end of the day, don’t really amount to much of anything. So here, folks, are the 5 Biggest Non-Stories on the Biggest Movies in Development.

1) Lord of the Rings veterans, Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen and now Christopher Lee, are all lined up now to return for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. David Tennant, meanwhile, is still being rumored for a role, as he’s been for the last several months. Honestly, with the exception of the casting of Martin Freeman of Bilbo Baggins, we could have skipped the last several years of The Hobbit coverage — the entrance and exit of Guillermo del Toro — and basically not have missed a thing. Eight years after The Return of the King and The Hobbit is about where we all expected it would go.

2) Meanwhile, last year (or the year before?), it was announced that Sam Mendes would direct Bond 23 and that Daniel Craig would return. Then MGM had a lot of financial difficulties, the movie languished, and was eventually postponed indefinitely. Well, guess what? MGM announced yesterday that Sam Mendes will direct Bond 23 and that Daniel Craig would return. It will be released on November 9, 2012.

3) It was in September of 2008 when Pajiba was the first to announce that Ghostbusters 3 was in development. Since that time, a lot of copy has been devoted to potential cast members, what the story might entail, and the behind-the-scenes drama on the development. What we knew way back then was that, most likely, it was Bill Murray holding up production. Two and a half years later, there’s still no official cast and, guess what? Bill Murray is still apparently holding it up. (Source: Deadline)

4) The Monday after The Dark Knight opened, speculation began on the third movie. What would it be about? Who would be the villain? Would Christopher Nolan return? Thousands of posts have been devoted to the topic and now, two-and-a-half years later, the only thing we know for sure is that Christopher Nolan will return (duh?) and that Tom Hardy has been cast. Right now, there’s a short list for the two female leads in The Dark Knight Rises. Several actresses are on that shortlist: Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Kate Mara, Charlotte Riley and Gemma Arterton (who has reportedly taken herself of the list because she’s been cast in Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. If one of these women are officially cast, we’ll let you know. (Source THR & Collider)

5) This one doesn’t quite fit into the “blockbuster” category, but I like round-numbers when mocking my trade news. Last year, it was announced that Sacha Baron Cohen would be playing Freddie Mercury in a Queen biopic (we mentioned this in relation to a brilliant video last week). The script would be written by Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon). Yesterday, Queen guitarist Brian May updated the status of the project to say that … drum roll … Peter Morgan has finished the first draft and Sacha Baron Cohen is raring to go. News!

Was Saruman in The Hobbit? It's been a while since I read it, but I don't recall that he was.

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters? This is seriously the name of a movie in production? I'm oddly intrigued by this.

All those listed up there as being lined up for the female lead in the Dark Knight, go away.

Granted you won't be worse than Katie 'the face' Holmes (well, Keira 'the plankinbothphysiqueandactingability' Knightley, you might be) but you'll still distract me with your shitness or mediocrity.

Just slap some of that youngifying cream or whatever it was they gave Jeff Bridges in Tron onto Meryl Streep and we're cool.

In the Dark Knight SEQUEL I meant to say, obviously.

The line-up dismayed me so much I forgot a word.

No, Todd, you are correct. Saruman isn't in The Hobbit.

This makes me nervous. The Hobbit is supposed to be more light and fun and adventuresome than LoTR.

I don't like this news.

When you hear news about The Hobbit movie, and you begin to get chuffed because it doesn't seem like the book you read in 9th grade, just repeat these words to yourself: Peter Jackson's J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle Earth. He's adapting the entire world, it seems.

Was Saruman in The Hobbit? It's been a while since I read it, but I don't recall that he was.

Do remember that Jackson is going to make 2 Hobbit-based movies. Saruman wasn't in that book and Gandalf disappeared for a good while because they were supposed to be fighting "The Necromancer". I'd guess that we're going to see some of that fight and maybe even hint at how Saruman obtained the palantir and began his fall to darkness.

David Tennant in The Hobbit? He's not exactly the type to do action stuff. He's the doctor for Gallifree's sake.

my guess, Tennant will either be Bard the Bowman or Beorn, the human who morphs into a bear. though I think he'd be better as Bard, since Bard is morose and melancholy and this role would suit Tennant.

five is a round number?

You know I loved Inception, and I'm a big fan of Nolan's Batman films, but you think he'd have learned after the first one that he needs to cast actresses rather than Pretty Young Things. I thought he'd been doing so well with Maggie Gyllenhall and Marion Cotillard (why isn't she being considered?)

Posted by: fionna at January 12, 2011 1:29 PM

I would guess that Marion Cotillard is out of the running because she is pregnant. I also do not want any of the actresses on that short list anywhere near Batman.

I was thinking Tennant would be the King of the Mirkwood elves. You know, the not so nice one who throws the dwarves in his dungeon. But, he could also work as the bowman who brings down the dragon. I think he's too skinny to be Beorn. I'm picturing someone more, um, manly as Beorn. Ray Stevenson, perhaps?

Howevern Saruman, Galadriel and Frodo do NOT belong in the Hobbit, period. Legolas could possibly work as a cameo, because he is from Mirkwood.

I've also heard they're bringing back Ian Holm as old Bilbo, so maybe old Bilbo is telling the story to Frodo. I don't know. Too many years have passed, and they're going to have to CGI Elijah Wood back to age 18.

Oh, gawd, I'm a geek.

Kate Mara is actually a good actress and quite lovely. I don't know who Charlotte Riley is. The other actresses for Batman III should not even be considered!! Ugh.

Also, mini-yay on Bond actually going forward. It really would be sad if there were no more Bonds to look forward to.

I don't know why the "actress" opposite Christian Bale has to be under 25. He's in his thirties, can't he be interested in, you know, a person rather than a face and/or body? There are probably some pretty actresses born in the 70s, too.

Also FIVE IS NOT A ROUND NUMBER AND WHY THE HELL IS THERE A HYPHEN BETWEEN THE WORDS "ROUND" AND "NUMBERS" FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS GREASY YOU'RE KILLING ME ROWLES

Posted by: Three-nineteen at January 12, 2011 5:51 PM

Charlotte Riley is Tom Hardy's fiance, and most definitely is not talented enough to be in a Christopher Nolan movie. Neither are any of the other girls listed.

No comments about the Mercury bio pic? Number 5? (Nice, round five). Personally, I fucking hate Sacha Baron Cohen...but then I remembered that I don't like Queen either (not even Bohemian Rhapsody)...so I guess I really don' t give a shit.
