The 2011 Golden Globe Nominations: All Your Favorite Shows GOT HOSED

By Dustin Rowles | Posted Under Trade News | Comments (73)

Zooey-Deschanel-020.jpg

Here we are, folks. Your 2011 Golden Globe Shams. Don’t look too hard for your favorites in the TV category — “Parks and Recreation,” “Community,” “Parenthood,” “Friday Night Lights” Timothy Olyphant, Ron Swanson, “Justified” “Happy Endings”— because they’re not there. But “Glee” is. And “New Girl.” And that woman from “Necessary Roughness,” which is seriously one of the worst shows on television. And lots of British shows, which are all very good, but which most of you haven’t seen.

Oh, and this is the richest of all: “Breaking Bad” was not nominated for best drama series. Adjust your opinion of The Golden Globes accordingly.

As for the movies: The Help is there, as you’d expect, because the Globes like feel good movies. The Artist was the big winner. Moneyball got a lot of love (deservedly), as did The Descendants (eh) and The Ides of March (sweet), so Clooney and Ryan Gosling are ALL up in this place. Otherwise, it’s mostly the same actors and actresses you’re accustomed to seeing at awards ceremonies (Meryl Streep, DiCaprio, Clooney), plus a lot of names you probably don’t recognize from The Artist.

I’m fairly disgusted with most of it, especially the TV noms.

Also, no Muppets. You’re dead to me, motherfuckers. Dead. To. Me.

No one can beat Jessica Lange.

Again with the bizarre comedy nomination for "Glee." Sigh. Poor "Community"/"Parks and Recreation."

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at December 15, 2011 8:58 AM

Peter Kinklage?

Posted by: Brave Sir Robin at December 15, 2011 9:14 AM

Musicals always get lumped in with comedies, but if Glee was still a comedy, I might actually still be watching it.

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at December 15, 2011 9:16 AM

Downton. DownTON. As much as Downtown Abbey amuses me. Or Abby...there's a skit in there somewhere.

Posted by: Carrie/Teabelly at December 15, 2011 9:18 AM

WTF. No Amy Poehler, No Nick Offerman, No Danny Pudi. The Big Bang Theory is not that funny. glee sucks and yeah the facebook title of this link is correct. Everybody got hosed.

Posted by: Alyson at December 15, 2011 9:19 AM

New Girl? Really? I mean yeah its on my DVR but...really????
Also no Martha Marcy May...other M name? Normally the Golden Globes don't confuse me THIS much...

Posted by: Luke at December 15, 2011 9:21 AM

No Muppets love? The music was fantastic! CURSE YOU,HFPA!

Posted by: SanityFair at December 15, 2011 9:22 AM

So happy to see the "Homeland" nominations - so well deserved! Some of the other nominations, however, are predictably dubious (Glee? The Help? Really?).

Posted by: cbdubs at December 15, 2011 9:23 AM

I think Jodie Foster was nominated for Carnage. Double Gosling though, woo!
Considering last year both The tourist and Burlesque were nominated, the film side seems pretty solid. Clearly the HFPA loves George Clooney. The TV comedy noms are unforgivable though, Community? Parks and Recreation? It's Always Sunny in Philapdelphia? Happy Endings? And it's a real shame that Steve Carrel missed out for his last go around as Michael Scott.

Posted by: Katie at December 15, 2011 9:24 AM

I love American Horror Story for how ridiculously fun it is, but really? That over Breaking Bad? GAH.

Posted by: Julie at December 15, 2011 9:26 AM

Alyson, AMy Poehler DID get nominated.

Posted by: KatSings at December 15, 2011 9:26 AM

Is My Week With Marilyn a comedy or a musical? This is absurd.

Posted by: Caspar at December 15, 2011 9:29 AM

BTW, The Keeper is performed by Chris Cornell, not Gerard Butler... as well as that Downton Abbey thing.

Posted by: protoformX at December 15, 2011 9:31 AM

If the Golden Globes *really* likes feel good movies The Muppets would have been nominated for something. Anything. I've had a completely terrible year and am feeling like quite the Grinch with all this holiday cheer bullshit everywhere. I saw The Muppets last night and wish I could see it again tonight. Pure joy. If you don't love The Muppets...well, you must be dead inside.

Posted by: in control at December 15, 2011 9:35 AM

This is mostly bullshit, unsurprisingly. But I do enjoy New Girl. Mostly for Schmidt. He cracks my shit up. :)

Posted by: amanda at December 15, 2011 9:42 AM

Golden Globes have always been about the party and who they can trot across the stage. They nominate the Jolies, the Depps, the Clooneys so peeps tune in and they throw in a deserving few so that the HFPA won't be laughed out of Tinseltown. Burlesque???? Really?

Posted by: kirbyjay at December 15, 2011 9:51 AM

i woke up for this shit. and now i can't go back to bed bc im so pissed. thank GOD poehler got nominated but the list of "best comedy" nominees legit make me want to throw my comp. and just a complete omission of FNL i mean i cant even really talk about it.

the only thing i was pleasantly surprised about was the 50/50 noms but those obviously had nothing to do with television

Posted by: anna at December 15, 2011 10:02 AM

I don't hate the little ragamuffin - he's alright in moderate doses - but people have really got to stop pretending that ScrunchFace DiCaprio is a great actor. A perpetually furrowed brow and the 'Oh well, at least it's better than Titanic' effect should only be able to take you so far.

Deschanel can also go back into whatever magical cupboard she sprung forth from. I have friends like her and I hate those friends. Protip: all the hugerrific cutesy eyes are really good for is an being easier target for spitting in.

Posted by: zeke the pig at December 15, 2011 10:02 AM

They're shitting us right?

Except for Madeleine Stowe and Jessica Lange. Because yes.

Posted by: Tori at December 15, 2011 10:05 AM

I'm pretty sure the Lannisters show up and just behead everybody.

Posted by: admin at December 15, 2011 10:06 AM

Worst. Year. Ever.

(No offense, Game Of Thrones.)

Posted by: DarthCorleone at December 15, 2011 10:09 AM

Mireille Enos “The Killing”

Did they choose this two episodes in and run out of Wite-Out or something?

Posted by: jM at December 15, 2011 10:12 AM

American Horror Story over Justified, Treme, Parenthood, and Breaking Bad is fucking criminal.

Shit, American Horror Story over a homeless woman's reused tampon is unacceptable. That pilot was easily the worst hour of television in 2011. And I watched every episode of The Killing.

Golden Globes. One day we'll learn not to care.

Posted by: QueeferSutherland at December 15, 2011 10:14 AM

I have to disagree with zeke. The movie on the whole wasn't as great as it could have been, but Leo was a perfect J. Edgar. The scene in which he tells his mother he doesn't like dancing with women "and it's high time she knew that" was one of the most powerful scenes I've seen in a while. It gives me chills just thinking about it.

I'm happy about some of the TV noms. American Horror Story is elevated by Jessica Lange and Evan Peters (snubbed), but it may not have deserved a Best Drama nom. I hate the lack of Jason Katims love (Parenthood and FNL). No Justified is just ridiculous.

Posted by: Mel C. at December 15, 2011 10:14 AM

WHERE'S LOUIE???

Posted by: Alex at December 15, 2011 10:18 AM

mostly bad. i'd like to give a shout out to the nominations for kristen wiig, homeland, tilda swinton and jgl though.

also look at the star power in that best actor in a drama lineup.

Posted by: the chaplain at December 15, 2011 10:54 AM

and poehler. of course.

Posted by: the chaplain at December 15, 2011 10:56 AM

The Golden Globes are so obviously a joke, you can't take them seriously in the least. I am glad "50/50" got some love, feel like most critic circles have forgotten about that film. And JGL got a nod too, take that Independent Spirit Awards!

Posted by: Corey at December 15, 2011 10:58 AM

Only thing I'm happy seeing are the 'Homeland' nominations. Damian Lewis and Claire Danes for ALL the awards.

Aside from that: meh.

Posted by: Aislinn at December 15, 2011 11:00 AM

God, the Globes are the biggest joke there is. They're possibly worse than the MTV Movie Awards, because at least those admit to being nothing but teenie service. The Globes are just a ploy to get as many viewers as possible, so hey, let's just nominate all the big stars like Clooney 15 times over so he'll have to come, the Glee kids to get tween viewers, and fuck everyone else. It's transparent and a little desperate. I mean hell, weren't they the ones who nominated Jennifer Love Hewitt and Angelina last year?

Fuck that show.

Posted by: figgy at December 15, 2011 11:01 AM

Yay, Idris Elba! That is all.

Posted by: fracas at December 15, 2011 11:02 AM

If I wasn't too lazy, I'd count how many of the commenter types from yesterday's P-Love NPR link were present here. People love to be hatin' on lists, yo.

So I'm gonna do it too: It seems odd that 3 of the 5 best comedy nominees have only aired like 7-10 episodes.

Posted by: Emcee Peepants at December 15, 2011 11:03 AM

THE HOUR! They did get one thing right at least.

Posted by: elizabeth at December 15, 2011 11:04 AM

Damn Anna are you really that mad about the Golden Globe award nominations.

Posted by: Glyn at December 15, 2011 11:05 AM

No Aaron Paul, No Giancarlo Esposito....no shame.

Posted by: Keith at December 15, 2011 11:06 AM

New Girl is actually good...i have no idea wth Episodes is, so I assume its terrible.

Ryan Gosling for Ides of March? Umm...I love me some Gosling but...Drive, not Ides of March, featured his Best Performance. Ah, whatever...

Posted by: Littlejon2001 at December 15, 2011 11:10 AM

On the plus side, it's nice to see JGL and "50/50" get some love.

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at December 15, 2011 11:12 AM

Surprised, why?

Posted by: , at December 15, 2011 11:25 AM

Well, these are lame. Except... DINKLAGE!

He better win.

Posted by: Ghisent at December 15, 2011 11:32 AM

No Tinker Tailor Solider Spy?
Nothing?

Posted by: Jules at December 15, 2011 11:36 AM

It's disgraceful that all Drive got was a nomination for Albert Brooks. Best film of the year, by far. But then again, I wouldn't expect the Golden Globes (Hollywood's equivalent of the dorky kid who does the jock's homework just so he can stand near him) to understand that.

Posted by: Ty at December 15, 2011 11:43 AM

OK, look. I love American Horror Story. Love it with a feverish intensity. And Jessica Lange totally deserves the nom. But the rest of its nominations? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FUCKING SHITTING ME.

Yes, I'm yelling.

Posted by: MM at December 15, 2011 11:45 AM

"Man or a Muppet" is the best original song in the history of ever. EVER! Fuck your Mozart, fuck your Pink Floyd, fuck your Rebecca Black! I will stab ever musical instrument I see from now until the end of time because it's not playing "Man or a Muppet"! Saxophone? It's getting a stabbing. Piccolo? A tiny stabbing, but a stabbing nevertheless. Percussion section? I'll cut a bitch-ass tympani. If Gaga's on any award show this year, I will march on stage, stab her piano and punch her in the face for wearing a frock made out of goldfish, unless she is playing "Man or a Muppet". Then I will sit quietly in sweet bliss while the ducet tones of that masterpiece wash over me.

Am I a MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN or am I a muppet? Seriously, a question of the ages.

Posted by: Quorren at December 15, 2011 11:46 AM

The Artist, Descendants and Midnight in Paris were all great movies. Which means all the awards will go to the fucking Help.

Do any of these people actually own a television? My cat made something better in his litter box than half these shows. Happy Endings, Parks & Rec and Community deserve so much love, as do all the actors in them. Louis CK missing is criminal, and I would mention the League but it would be pointless to expect any voter to be that progressive.
At least Kelsey Grammer was recognized. And although I have never seen their shows, it's always nice to see love given to anyone from the Wire, even though it's about 7 years too late.

Posted by: cindylouwho at December 15, 2011 11:51 AM

New year, same story. Typical garbage nominations. For the few they got right there are dozens they got wrong. Hopefully Gervais eviscerates the unworthy.

Posted by: TylerDFC at December 15, 2011 11:52 AM

Right on for Jimmy McNulty and Stringer Bell...but the rest of this is awful. On what planet is My Week with Marilyn a comedy/musical?

Posted by: SLM at December 15, 2011 11:53 AM

I agree with Keith

What. The. Hell.

Maybe...maybe they can get away with not putting in Esposito in (actaully no they can't). But no Aaron Paul? What kind of award show is this? There is no justice in the world.

Posted by: Zach at December 15, 2011 11:58 AM

Ha, I agree with Quorren. "Man or Muppet" was by far the best song of the year. If voters feel compelled for reasons against my knowledge to nominate Jim Parsons every year, they could fill that void with this heartwarming song. Bonus, would leave a spot open for someone who deserves best actor in a comedy.
Chickens singing/clucking "Fuck You" is a pretty deserving song as well.

Posted by: cindylouwho at December 15, 2011 12:15 PM

I'm glad to see they gave love to "Boss" and Kelsey Grammar's role in it. It's really ridiculously good. but there's so many horrible other inclusions and/or omissions that this slight victory for Boss doesn't do much in the grand scheme

Posted by: Mark at December 15, 2011 12:17 PM

This is seriously garbage. I mean, I actually kind of like Modern Family, but it's not as good as they make it out to be here.

Nice to see Duchovny nominated though, though it's in the category with the WORST choices for nominations as far as I can tell. It's almost like they have ONE decent nomination in each category, despite missing a huge number of great performances.

I think part of the problem for shows like Parks & Rec and Community (and even Modern Family) is that none/all of the characters are "supporting". I mean, obviously Amy Poehler is the lead for her show, but who's the "lead" in Modern Family? Or in Community? And who's "supporting"?

Anyway, no Aaron Paul just shows that these assholes wouldn't know a good performance if it doused them in acid in a bathtub.

Posted by: Bert at December 15, 2011 12:22 PM

I've never been able to see the title "The Golden Globes" without thinking it's some kind of boob contest - and look, it is!

Posted by: BierceAmbrose at December 15, 2011 12:33 PM

Garret Dillahunt is comedy gold in Raising Hope, people! COMEDY GOLD!

Seriously - Dillahunt is awesome.

Posted by: JH at December 15, 2011 12:39 PM

Why do we keep forgetting that it's like this every year? Every year! The Golden Globes nominations are ALWAYS like awards show Tourette's.

"Wow, Thomas Jane and Idris Elba get recognized! FUCKINGGLEENOLOUIECKGODDAMNPRICKSHATEBREAKINGBAD! Hey, Bill Nighy got a nod. Cool!"

Posted by: Jast at December 15, 2011 12:56 PM

at least Game of Thrones got some nods, but I will allow all the stupid fucking "New Girl" nominations if fucking Big Bang Theory wasn't on there. That show is the worst thing in the world, well, besides Whitney.

Posted by: John G. at December 15, 2011 1:04 PM

American Horror Story? Really? There is a reason it is a guilty pleasure. Because it is terrible. Really, it is just bad. Jessica Lange may be amazing, but that does not stop if from just being bad television.

Posted by: Haystacks at December 15, 2011 1:08 PM

I hope Robert De Niro gets to be on stage this year presenting or something so he can shit on the Foreign Press all over again.

Posted by: MissRos at December 15, 2011 1:21 PM

So I'm guessing we're not getting anything nearly as fun for Best Actress in a Comedy Series as we got at the Emmys, right? I'm still strong in the hope that Amy Poehler can top that one eventually. Anything to liven things up, though at least at the GGs people can get drunk, which ups the amusement factor by at least 3.

Posted by: Jerry at December 15, 2011 2:01 PM

Where the fuck is John Noble or Anna Torv???? Jesus, do the nominators watch any TV?

Posted by: Adam C. at December 15, 2011 3:21 PM

Episodes? I'm sorry. That was one of the most dull, unlikable shows of the year. Matt LeBlanc is unfunny even when trying to make fun of himself.

Episodes is the Camille Grammar of TV Comedies.

Also that LG ad that pops up every time i try to get my scroll bar on the right? Kill it. For fucks sake.

Posted by: tajmccall at December 15, 2011 4:16 PM

I can't hate on an awards ceremony that actually does recognize my new favorite sitcom. New Girl is sweet, funny, and is willing to not wrap everything in a pretty little bow at the end of an episode. Well-acted, well-written, and well-made. Bonus: no laugh track.

Posted by: Robert at December 15, 2011 5:44 PM

Just wanted to third the hate for Big Bang Theory. I have acidentally left that on (after Seinfeld reruns) the past two nights while doing dishes and it.is.just.awful.

Posted by: anon33 at December 15, 2011 5:47 PM

WHERE THE HELL IS GARY OLDMAN'S NOMINATION?!!!??

Posted by: RedRage at December 15, 2011 6:02 PM

So...they must actually have watched Parks and Recreation if Amy Poehler got a nomination. How in the HELL could they have watched season 3 and not nominate it, or tell all the other shows to piss off and just give them the award straight off!

I watched season 2 of Glee and I would rather dig out my eyes with a spoon then do it again (thank god Matthew Morrison was not nominated, it would have cost me way too much to fix my computer after I throw it off the balcony)

Posted by: squishy at December 15, 2011 6:24 PM

Happy to see 50/50 get some love, as well as Midnight in Paris, the Borgias and The Artist.
the other noms...meh

Posted by: Ash at December 15, 2011 6:41 PM

seriously. what a joke. the exclusion of parenthood is rifuckingdiculous.

Posted by: Tracey at December 15, 2011 6:49 PM

The Golden Globes are all hand jobs and finger bangs.

The same fucking people...every year.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at December 15, 2011 7:59 PM

I actually like the TV Drama noms. AHS is not deserving over Breaking Bad or Justified but I'll just assume the foreign press doesn't have access to basic cable. Otherwise the category is pretty strong. Comedy TV noms are a travesty though.

What bothers me most is the lack of a Drama nom for Dragon Tattoo. Not a good sign. I was pretty excited for it.

Posted by: ed newman at December 15, 2011 8:44 PM

And since no one else has mentioned it yet: enough with the Eric Stonestreet nominations. He plays the most stereotypical, borderline(?)-offensive gay character on television today. Modern Family has its moments, but Cam just pisses me off.

Posted by: Uriah Creep at December 15, 2011 8:47 PM

Uriah Creep, I also feel that way about Sofia Vergara's nomination.

Posted by: Ash at December 15, 2011 11:00 PM

Leaving Breaking Bad out of the Best Drama category is like having a category for best basketball players of all time and not including Michael Jordan.

Or having a category for people I'd like to punch in the face and not including Katherine Heigl.

Or having a category for soulless asshats and not including TMZ.

Boggles the freaking mind.

Posted by: JC at December 16, 2011 12:58 PM

I guess the Globes are still ticked off at Ricky's hosting from last year and decided to take it out on the viewers/participants. In all fairness, it was a weak year for movies, but the blatant neglect for a lot of well written/performed television shows is pretty obvious. I usually don't say this, but I hope the Oscars can do better. Also- awards or not, Sons of Anarchy is the best show on television.

Posted by: Billdog at December 16, 2011 1:21 PM

Honestly? Those movie noms are as solid as they've ever been, especially the Comedy/Musical category. I'm more surprised than anyone about that.

But those TV noms? Unforgivable.
