The Critic’s Choice Awards were announced this morning, and with a few exceptions (“Glee” “The Office”) and omissions (“Cougar Town” “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon”), the critics got most of it right (Courteney Cox and Busy Phillips were nominated, fortunately, and I have to assume that “Breaking Bad” was not eligible this year, otherwise heads will be broken).

Of course, the critics also cheated a little by handing out ten nominations in each the Best Comedy and Best Drama categories, which diminishes the prestige of a nominee by giving practically everyone a gold star (after all, “Fringe” was nominated). But any awards ceremony that sees fit to honor the likes of Connie Britton, Kyle Chandler, and Ron Effing Swanson gets a thumbs up and a knowing wink from me.

Margo Martindale is the best actperson on the whole list. The End.

No, wait, I want to rage about The Killing for a sec. When the hell was the window during which these shows had to air to qualify? Whenever it was, I guess the nominations pre-dated The Killing's decline from "interesting mystery" to "problematic writing" to "just boring and these are terrible cops" and then to last night's "insultingly and aggressively awful."

Parakeet:

I couldn't agree more. Martindale is exceptionally good. And last nights "Very Special Episode" of the Killing was hideous.

There are so many things about this list that make me happy but Danny Pudi being nominated might be number 1.

Posted by: quirk at June 6, 2011 9:54 AM

No Peter Dinklage?
These "critics" will never get it right. Slattery was barely seen in MM last season, but he gets a nod?
Friggin' critical snobs.

Yay for Cat Deeley finally getting a nomination! She's a fantastic host. Too bad there wasn't any other love for SYTYCD, though.

1) Parenthood was totally robbed. I don't know what all these awards people have against Lauren Graham, but ugh.

2) Yay for the beginning of Justified awards love! The Olyphant in a tux!

3) I think Steve Carrell should win stuff for his last season. I know the show isn't what it once was, but his performance in his final episode was nothing short of excellent.

How can you nominate a show that hasn't had its season completed yet? I'm not debating the inclusion of Game of Thrones on quality, it's my favorite drama on air hands down. But seems pretty soon when all of the episodes haven't aired. Also, leaving off Peter Dinklage is just stupid. Props to Katey Sagal and Margo Martindale. The inclusion of 30 Rock on the Best Comedy list has to be because they are running out of comedies because this last season was horrible.

Best Drama - The Good Wife, never once been bored in 2 seasons

Best Actor- William Macy in Shameless though it's NOT A DRAMA!! Have they even watched this show?

Best Actress - Julianna Marguilies. She has made a goody two shoes character incredibly entertaining.

Best Supp Act - Alan Cumming of the unfortunate name. He is slimy yet sweet

Best Supp Acts- Christina Hendricks boobs, plus she is pretty good too.

Reality - Survivor and Design Star, they are the only ones I watch

Talk- There is a reason The Daily Show has won 157 in a row

Comedy- I'm going with Community. Funny, original, innovative

Best Act - I'm giving it up for Joel McHale because....just because

Best Acts- Courtney Cox, because she is funny even through the Botox. And Nurse Edie is not a comedy!!

Best supp act- Ty Burrell and Eric Stonestreet. Though Ron Swanson is perfect at deadpan, these two just bring the funny week after week.

Best supp acts- Eden Sher is freaking hysterical. Show me an actor who can take a snowball to the face and react accordingly without flinching. She is a little gem.

I'm gonna put my Troy fanboy pants on and say "WHAT NO DONALD GLOVER!?" Ok, I'm done. Actually, I love Chevy Chase on that show too.

I haven't watched it, but is Nurse Jackie really a comedy series? The ads for it make it look much more drama-like.

Posted by: Socrates_Johnson at June 6, 2011 10:20 AM

If Coach and Tammi Taylor don't win all the awards this season, I'm setting something on fire.

I don't even care about Parks and Rec winning that much--I realize it's not a hugely popular, money-making show and that most voters are assholes--but FNL's over, dammit. It needs to go out with a bang.

Posted by: Figgy at June 6, 2011 10:26 AM

Terrible episodes of 30 Rock are still better than any episode of Glee, The Middle and especially The Big Bang Theory.

I'm pulling for Martindale for Best Supporting Actress, The Daily Show for Talk Show, Nick Offerman for Supporting Actor, Mad Men for Best Drama and Community for Best Comedy.

I'm hoping Mireille Enos does not win because speaking monotonously and occasionally wincing is not acting.

Posted by: becks at June 6, 2011 10:27 AM

RuPaul's Drag Race? Start your engines. That show has to win. Upsetting that this body wouldn't nominate RuPaul himself for Best Host, but at least they've forced their hand to give the award to the best competitive reality show by a country mile.

Posted by: Robert at June 6, 2011 10:31 AM

Anna Torv got an acting nomination? I like Fringe, but she is a two-by-four.

Posted by: seth at June 6, 2011 10:33 AM

and I have to assume that “Breaking Bad” was not eligible this year, otherwise heads will be broken

It has to do with the delay of the fourth season. The criteria seems to be much more recent shows, and Season 3 finished back in, wait, June of last year?! I feel a blackout coming on...

Posted by: branded at June 6, 2011 10:41 AM

I have to admit I don't get the Eric Stonestreet love. The hand flapping and twirling is getting more and more annoying. "Look at me, I'm so convincing as a gay man." Uggh.

But other than that: yay, so many names I love!

Posted by: Thijs at June 6, 2011 11:30 AM

Alan Cumming ROCKS in The Good Wife. However, he won't win, because any group of people who nominates Chelsea Handler's show instead of Stephen Colbert's show is obviously a collective idiot (not to mention that the award belongs to Walton Goggins).

Posted by: Three-nineteen at June 6, 2011 11:41 AM

So Game of Thrones is nominated for best drama but no Peter Dinklage for best actor?

How is that possible?

Posted by: John W at June 6, 2011 11:44 AM

You're all missing the big story being buried here...

Charlie Day was nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.

If you aren't rooting for him, no matter how awesome his co-nominees are, you're just doing it wrong. What "it?" Exactly.

@Socrates: First Spider-Man, now the Critics Choice Awards -- Childish Gambino ain't never gonna get no proper love. Also, I'm glad someone else loves Chevy on Community. He's, like, perfect; sad that more people don't see that.

Posted by: RobP at June 6, 2011 11:51 AM

Thijs, don't you find all the characters on Modern Family to be broad stereotypes?

Posted by: becks at June 6, 2011 11:52 AM

Oh RobP, I definitely think Chevy is perfect. I'm just not so sure he's acting.

Posted by: becks at June 6, 2011 11:53 AM

Anna Torv got an acting nomination? I like Fringe, but she is a two-by-four

Playing several versions of a character does not in-and-of-itself make you a good actor. You have to play at least one version well. And playing Spock? Let's just let that sleeping dog lie.

I think they could have gotten by with 5 noms in the drama and comedy series.

Drama
Boardwalk Empire - HBO
Friday Night Lights - DirecTV
Game of Thrones - HBO
Justified - FX
Mad Men - AMC

Pretty solid list with two debatable substitutions (for Boardwalk Empire): The Good Wife (I don't watch) and The Walking Dead (Very Good but with massive flaws). The other three have no business in this company.

Comedy
Modern Family - ABC
Cougar Town - ABC
Parks and Recreation - NBC
30 Rock - NBC

Take your pick for the 5th spot. Archer is probably the pick but I haven't watched it yet. Community, Louie and Californication were just too uneven. The Middle is good but lacks big laughs. Glee is an abomination. I'm just glad Nurse Jackie and Entourage weren't nominated. I like my comedies to have at least some humor.

Margo Martindale has to win. Elizabeth Moss should win. Best Supporting Actor in a drama is the most stacked category.

One omission: I would have loved to see Rob Lowe get nominated for his combined work in Californication and Parks and Rec. Both great jobs in completely different comedic roles.

Posted by: ed newman at June 6, 2011 12:01 PM

I love Danny Pudi, but I too am outraged by the lack of Donald Glover for BSA in Community. Actually, Alison Brie deserves some notice as well. I'd watch a show that consisted of just Danny, Donald, and her doing random stuff with dioramas.

They could do puppet show reenactments of The Killing.

CHARLIE DAY GOT A FUCKING NOMINATION!!!!

Hell yes! I mean, I know he won't win, but I seriously think Charlie is the funniest TV character possibly of all time. Fuck yeah, that made my day.

Posted by: ChristianH at June 6, 2011 1:19 PM

Also, big ups for Louie. I honestly think that category is a dog fight between Louie and Parks and Rec, which is why Glee or some shit will probably win, the fucks.

Posted by: ChristianH at June 6, 2011 1:21 PM

If Game of Thrones can be nominated without even being done with their first season, there is no reason the Breaking Bad shouldn't be eligible. Unless they already got awards last year for the last run season.

Posted by: Paultera at June 6, 2011 2:51 PM

Anna Torv played Olivia, Fauxlivia, and the mixes.
Added to that Bell, which means 80jr old man in a woman's body,it was Bell, not Spock. You can hear the praise of Mr. Nimoy himself on You Tube.

To Ed Neman, Anna Torv not only plays one character fantastic, but all of them.
Your problem that you cannot appreciate beautiful, subtle acting, classes higher then every other nominee.

Lets hope that beautiful, versatile acting gets rewarded.

Posted by: Passing at June 6, 2011 7:12 PM

Gee Nimoy praised Torv. Well she must be great then. He has no rea$on to do so otherwise.

Posted by: ed newman at June 6, 2011 10:07 PM

I really hope Nick Offerman wins.
