One shot: John Hawkes for Winter's Bone. I could have sworn they would have skipped him.
He was awesome in that.

I am surprisingly...not surprised and very, very underwhelmed. And no, promises of getting listless up don't work on THIS gal...anymore.

Whatever, I'll probably watch the show just to see Natalie Portman chunk her shoe at Annette Bening when the older broad slips in a surprise best Oscar win. If anything compels the Academy to NOT give the statue to Natalie I'd say it should be the idea of her ass giving another nauseating "creating a creation" speech. Blech.

Let me see if I can call my shot this early...

Pic: The King's Speech or The Social Network
Actor: Firth
Actress: Portman
Supporting Actor: Bale
Supporting Actress: Leo
Director: Aronofsky
Original Screenplay: The King's Speech
Adapted Screenplay: The Social Network
Foreign Film: Biutiful
Animated: Toy Story 3

Human Centipede cruelly ignored in the Razzies, and now cruelly ignored in the Oscars.

Is there no fucking justice in this world?

Posted by: zeke the pig at January 25, 2011 9:35 AM

I care way too much, even though I get let down in some way every year. But I went out and saw all the movies I could so I could make my judgments and roll my eyes at the TV come Oscar time.

Posted by: Dorothy Snarker at January 25, 2011 9:36 AM

Guesses as to who wins?

Firth, Portman, Bale, Steinfeld.

I think director/best picture might be split this year -- largely because it's a toss up as to who would get what. I know there are no big surprises here, but I'm a glass half full sort of gal -- I think this was a good year for movies. I enjoyed the hell out of True Grit, King's Speech, Inception, and Toy Story 3. Social Network was okay -- I need to see it again before I pass judgment -- and Black Swan was just waaay too melodramatic for my tastes, but that's the danger you run when you go out on a limb.

I'm not super devoted to one film winning, but I'm not super angry at any of them either. True Grit and Toy Story 3 in particular are lovely films, and they will stick with me for a good long time.

I'm a bit peeved that Hailee didn't get best actress nommed for True Grit, because she really did carry that movie, but she has a better chance of winning in supporting anyways because she's not up against self-destructive crazy ballerina lady.

Posted by: linny at January 25, 2011 9:42 AM

I think I just anti-climaxed.

Posted by: Simon at January 25, 2011 9:43 AM

I just want to see HBC react to Natalie Portman's laugh again.

As for the noms...nothing shocking, although it's nice to see John Hawkes on the list.

Human Centipede cruelly ignored in the Razzies, and now cruelly ignored in the Oscars.

Their comment: Mmmmphrrrrmmmmffff!

Posted by: sars at January 25, 2011 9:46 AM

As a high functioning alcoholic, I'm very surprised by every single choice the academy made. I'm now moving to the lists of cinematogrophy, editing, costumes, music etc. I think there might be some surprises as well in those categories.

Cheers!

Posted by: Dugs at January 25, 2011 9:48 AM

Why all the award/nom love for Social Network? It was a good film, yeah. But that's all it really was.
Oh right, mediocre is the new good and good is the new great. And great is the new rarity. Silly me.

Posted by: cinekat at January 25, 2011 9:50 AM

Oh right, mediocre is the new good and good is the new great. And great is the new rarity. Silly me.

What it actually means is that different people have differing tastes and opinions on what they consider a great movie.

Posted by: sars at January 25, 2011 9:58 AM

I'm still trying to figure out how Ryan Gosling didn't get a nomination for Lars and the Real Girl. I won't be able to get around to this year's umbrage for another couple of months. Spending those 36 weeks yelling "HE WAS ROBBED!" after Giamatti was overlooked for Sideways really threw a wrench in my schedule.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 25, 2011 9:58 AM

@cinekat

It's almost as though different people like different things!

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 25, 2011 10:01 AM

In a million years I will never understand how a movie can get nominated for Best Picture, but the director goes un-nominated for Best Director. In one million years.

Posted by: superasetnte at January 25, 2011 10:03 AM

Some justice for John Hawke at least, and Firth deserves an Oscar (not for King's Speech but for A Single Man so they'll give him the cripple nod this year).
But how in the hell did Mark Ruffalo get a nomination? Frankly I don't know how he ever gets a role but in Kids Are Alright, he just stood around and mumbled for a few scenes. The man clearly has naked pictures of some senior Hollywood exec with an altar boy.

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 25, 2011 10:05 AM

@superasante...Nathaniel at The Film Experience wrote a very brief but good argument on why Best Picture doesn't necessarily mean Best Director:

Posted by: sars at January 25, 2011 10:09 AM

How many more movies are we guessing Affleck has to make until the Academy showers him with nominations and statuettes in a Gibcosteastredsonnerwoodfordgasm?

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 25, 2011 10:10 AM

The only snub I see is Nolan didn't get a Best Director nomination. I would have given him that over Best Picture. I'm pulling for Winter's Bone in every category nominated.

Toy Story 3 is overrated. It's good, it's not great. I just don't get the fawning praise over what is essentially a rehash of 1 and 2. How To Train Your Dragon was better.

Posted by: TylerDFC at January 25, 2011 10:13 AM

Just saw The King's Speech and I think Firth absolutely deserves it for that movie over A Single Man. Amazing.

He's really the only person I'm cheering for... except for maybe Bale because he's long overdue for an Oscar, but I haven't seen The Fighter yet.

Christopher Nolan got snubbed big time. That was the biggest shocker for me.

Posted by: Melissa at January 25, 2011 10:15 AM

Is the category Best Foreign Film or Best Foreign Language Film ? I thought it was just foreign language but I guess that is a weird distinction to make.

If it's the former, then Animal Kingdom was robbed.

So was Ryan Gosling.

And I'm surprised Waiting for Superman wasn't nominated in the documentary category

I also would have liked to see Michael Douglas get a nomination for Solitary Man. Not because he has cancer and we should give him pity awards- but he killed it in that movie. No one plays slimey like Michael Douglas.

But all in all it's exactly what we expected. Which isn't really a bad thing. For the most part I feel like the right movies were recognized.

Posted by: THRILLHO at January 25, 2011 10:17 AM

How the hell did Inception get passed over for Best Editing? And Tron Legacy was completely shut out in the technical categories, including Best Score. That was pretty surprising.

Posted by: TylerDFC at January 25, 2011 10:21 AM

The Ilusionist made the noms!!!! not only do i get to drink, but i have reason to celebrate the rest of the day!

Posted by: idleprimate at January 25, 2011 10:25 AM

I'd like to see 'How To Train Your Dragon' win for Best Animated Feature.

But that's not gonna happen.

As to the rest: meh.

Posted by: Aislinn at January 25, 2011 10:25 AM

Tron Legacy was robbed by not being nominated for best animation.

Posted by: Dugs at January 25, 2011 10:27 AM

superasente:

Haha well now with 10 best picture nominations and 5 best director nominations, every year at least 5 directors will be left out.

I like to look at the new 10 picture nominations and the remaining 5 nominated directors as narrowing down the best picture nominations to the actual contenders.

But under the old system w 5 and 5 I was confused too. But there are times (albeit rare) where I feel like the director's efforts might have overshadowed the movie itself (Avatar comes to mind- pretty mediocre movie with a lot of ambition- Cameron created an entirely new technology over years and some people believe it will change what people expect from their movie going experience. So even though the movie was pretty forgettable many people thought his impact on film should be recognized).

Posted by: THRILLHO at January 25, 2011 10:29 AM

I'm a little surprised Danny Boyle didn't get a nomination for 127 Hours, but it seems a crowded field.

However, HELL YEAH TRENT REZNOR! I hope he wins for best score.:)

Posted by: luthien26 at January 25, 2011 10:29 AM

I take that back, looks like Tron Legacy got a best sound editing nom. Still, the visual designers have got to be pretty disappointed. That was the only thing going for that movie.

Posted by: TylerDFC at January 25, 2011 10:30 AM

Who dares to rip on Mark Ruffalo? The guy was brilliant in The Kids Are Alright. I mean he was playing opposite a wall of heavy lesbian feminism and rolled with it. A lesser actor would have ruined the film.

Posted by: Muteki at January 25, 2011 10:34 AM

I can see nolan being passed over. it was an exceptional year for film, and inception was a half decent genrish heist-like film. it worked as a film was was so much less than it could have been.

i like nolan, a lot. but inception was a popcorn flic that didn't even deliver the surreal psychological dreamstate worlds it's premise could have delivered. if shamyalan had made inception, people would have heckled it.

Posted by: idleprimate at January 25, 2011 10:41 AM

John Hawkes!! Good for Sol.

Posted by: Julie at January 25, 2011 10:43 AM

So they nominated a 14-year-old for Best Supporting Actress, and last year they nominated a girl who had never been in a movie before and essentially played herself for Best Actress.

I really don't want to hear bullshit from any actor any more about how difficult "The Craft" is.

Posted by: , at January 25, 2011 10:48 AM

My most-robbed nominee: Andrew fucking Garfield. I cannot believe Eisenberg got nominated and Garfield didn't. Eisenberg did a fine job, but I thought Garfield was truly exceptional. The actors nominated were all terrific, but Garfield had a hell of a lot more screen time than Renner did (and, believe me, I think Renner's a great actor).

Posted by: samantha t at January 25, 2011 10:53 AM

Why the hell did Hailee Steinfeld get nominated for SUPPORTING actress? The movie revolved around her character.

Posted by: Zeff at January 25, 2011 10:55 AM

What "heavy lesbian feminism?"

The Kids Are Alright offended every lesbian I know. I'm not making that up: gay friends who saw it in a cinema in a predominantly gay part of town and told me the women who didn't walk out were cursing at the screen (and these are not mil-fem lesbians) because it perpetuated the "all a lesbian needs is a good fuck to show her what she's missing" point of view.

The film was well-acted by Moore and Benning but overall it was a piece of crap Lifetime movie dressed up in indie garb.

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 25, 2011 10:56 AM

Paddydog - that's what I heard, too.

Posted by: samantha t at January 25, 2011 10:57 AM

One of the short films nominated for Best Animated Short is "The Gruffalo." This means that Mark Ruffalo MUST announce the nominees for Best Animated Short.

Posted by: mightygodking at January 25, 2011 11:00 AM

Also, there was one surprise in the major nominations: Javier Bardem for Biutiful. He didn't get nominated for a Golden Globe or a SAG award and most of the critic's society awards have skipped him. So there you go.

Posted by: mightygodking at January 25, 2011 11:02 AM

Are you shitting me! Toy Story 3 in the running for Best Adapted Screenplay? What the fuck is going on here? A goddamn cartoon no less.

Posted by: Pookie at January 25, 2011 11:07 AM

Paddydog wrote: '...[The Kids are All Right] perpetuated the "all a lesbian needs is a good fuck to show her what she's missing" point of view."'

I heard that from many people, too, but interestingly enough, I, as a heterosomethin', occasionally notice the inverse(?) of that used in films, often for women as well, where a woman in a tepid hetero marriage gets some sort of shot in the arm from developing an albeit impermanent romance with another woman.

Posted by: sars at January 25, 2011 11:14 AM

Yeah, I agree that The Kids Are All Right is dressed-up Lifetime. Good performances, and Annette Benning had two particuarly strong scenes (the dinner table Joni Mitchell-ing, the sobering bathroom discovery), but otherwise? Eh. The King's Speech is, similarly, TV-dressed-as-movie, elevated by excellent performances.

Happiest suprises are John Hawkes and all the love for the awesome, low-key Winter's Bone. Injustice awards to the snubbing of Nolan and Garfield (but I think he was even better in Never Let Me Go).

Posted by: Kettle at January 25, 2011 11:14 AM

So Winter’s Bone isn’t a porn flick?

Posted by: Pookie at January 25, 2011 11:17 AM

Major Omissions:

- Never Let Me Go. I knew this was a long shot because no one even saw this movie, but I fucking loved it. Probably the most underrated movie of the year. On a related note...

- Scarfield! Nothing for The Social Network or Never Let Me Go? What a waste. So talented. So sexy.

- Since when are there only 3 movies nominated for Best Animated Picture? No Megamind? No Despicable Me? Toy Story 3 was overrated, but Tangled, while a bit bland, had some of the most beautiful animation I have seen in a long time. I guess we will all know if the Pixar love has been taken too far if Cars 2 is nominated next year. Seriously, that looks like total garbage.

Posted by: lyssie at January 25, 2011 11:18 AM

I am decidedly whelmed. The only one I'd really care about would be Christian Bale, because I dearly want to see another drunken rant from him as a speech, and Inception winning Original Screenplay. Other than that, I'll just drink a lot and look at the pretty dresses.

Posted by: Figgy "Bagels" Figarelli at January 25, 2011 11:22 AM

Well, I guess the thing that stands out most about the nominations list is that fact that I really don't see anything on there that I would be rooting against. 2010 was a solid year with a lot of good to very good films. Even with 10 best Picture nominations I think they have solid films in every spot. Nothing to complain about.

I also don't feel overly passionate about any of them but it is nice to not see a criminally undeserving Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts nominations. In fact, both actress categories are pretty solid all the way down (I could gripe about Hailee Steinfeld being relegated to the supporting category... has the Academy ever defined what makes a supporting vs leading role?).

And THRILLHO is right, you can complain about omission in the Best Director category but you would have to bump someone pretty deserving to get Nolan in. Frankly I think he got robbed the year of Dark Knight (when he should have won best director outright). This year he's the odd man out and I'm fine with it.

It will be a little disappointing and uninspiring if The Social Network wins Best Picture because nobody mounts a serious challenge but I still think there are 10 solid movies nominated, and that makes this a good year.

Posted by: Yossarian at January 25, 2011 11:25 AM

(I'm doing this for any post related to Natalie Portman here on out. Call it my version of an Oscar campaign.)

Fuck Natalie Portman. This is a conversation I would have with Portman if I were Gay Perry.

Me: Fuck you, Natalie Portman. Look up "overrated" in the dictionary. You know what you'll find?
Portman: A picture of me?
Me: No! A definition of the word "overrated," which you fucking are!

Posted by: denesteak at January 25, 2011 11:45 AM

Oh! And I want to watch so maybe, just *maybe* Annette Benning will get the Oscar instead of Portman, just because Portman did that monstrosity with Ashton Kutcher. And then I want her to cry and blame Kutcher and EVERYONE WILL BLAME KUTCHER and he will go away.

I WANT HER TO SUFFER FOR HER SINS.

Posted by: Figgy "Bagels" Figarelli at January 25, 2011 11:48 AM

Is it just me or did Figgy go away for a few weeks (I thought she had been deported until Pinky filled me in) and come back with the fire of vengeance in her soul. Yesterday it was Kate Hudson (I totally agree) and today it's Natalie Portman (I have no opinion either way). I'm hoping she's working her way up to Zooey Deschanel. That's when it gets interesting.

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 25, 2011 11:54 AM

Hey! Mark Wahlberg! You know who got nominated for best actor?

Posted by: The Mutt at January 25, 2011 11:56 AM

Black Swan
James Franco
Michelle Williams
Christian Bale
Helena Bonham Carter
Darren Aronofsky
Inception
127 Hours
Biutiful
How to Train Your Dragon

and...done.

@PaddyDog and sars

It's a pretty common trope in all aspects of the culture, isn't it. From the mainstream's fantasy that any drunk women will be up for some sapphic indulgence to all lesbians secretly wanting a roll in the hay with a guy to my isn't this lesbian affair liberating. The inverse is never true. The closest it gets is puerile prison shower jokes. If only chicks understood how important penises are and that they should get it on with the other women were for men to watch! @PaddyDog and sars

Wow. What happened there?

I'm cut off.

I'll show myself out.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 25, 2011 12:07 PM

Robert Duvall in Get Low was not nominated?!!!!! I do not understand how this film was so overlooked.

And I agree with some of the other commenters-I don't get the hype about The Kids are Alright. I found it unbearable.

Posted by: V at January 25, 2011 12:08 PM

Amen Mrs. Julien. Consider the contrast SPOILERS AHEAD of A Single Man where Julianne Moore's character has been flinging herself at Colin Firth's character and he is depressed and lonely and aching for some physical contact but he can't do it because he's gay. And then this year Julianne Moore is in a happy stable relationship with another woman but along comes a man and Wham! they're banging like rabbits after just one look. I found it really insulting.

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 25, 2011 12:12 PM

John Hawkes for the win! I have to give props to the Academy on this one, he stole every scene in that movie. Based on Deadwood and Eastbound and Down, I never thought he had the chops to pull off a performance like this off, but he couldn't have nailed it better. Makes me wish he had more screentime in American Gangster. To use a Tom Hardy comparison, this was his Bronson, now let's see if they give him some good roles.

I don't care, but I was glad to see "Winter's Bone" get some love. And John Hawkes, he rules.

Also, love the nomination of Melissa Leo, but she should have won for "Frozen River" last year. Note, I haven't seen "The Fighter," maybe I'd like her in that just as much.

Batman: Under the Red Hood
:(

Posted by: Ed at January 25, 2011 1:38 PM

I am the only person who thought True Grit was really dumb, phony poignancy? Not even as entertaining as the original was.

I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about/was expecting. The noms have been pretty consistent in all awards being given out.

Let's all just be happy that John Hawkes, Jacki Weaver, and Another year got the little shout outs they did. I'm hoping Nolan can pick up for best screenplay since he got snubbed for Best Director. I dont know if it's the timing of when it was released, but Inception deserves some win.

Posted by: valerie at January 25, 2011 1:38 PM

I hope Christian Bale rocks his Sexy Jesus hair some more at the show.

Posted by: Figgy at January 25, 2011 1:44 PM

"Yet another year OVERFLOWING with people of colour among the nominees..."

I understand your point, but since Spike Lee seems to be semi-retired and Tyler Perry continues to get the box office numbers he does (thereby discouraging anybody serious from doing something better), until the Academy starts to pay more attention to South African cinema, where are these nominations going to come from?

Posted by: PaddyDog at January 25, 2011 1:55 PM

Mark Ruffalo.. really?

Posted by: Jolene at January 25, 2011 2:01 PM

Portman did an incredible job in Black Swan. I don't care if you didn't like the movie, but her performance was inarguably one of the best of the year so I don't know why so many people are against her winning unless, YOU DIDN'T SEE BLACK SWAN!

So sad Rabbit Hole is getting any recognition. It was so good!

Posted by: Theseus at January 25, 2011 2:06 PM

Trent Reznor is nominated. i don't care about anything else. YAY!

Posted by: jeannine at January 25, 2011 2:10 PM

How to Train your Dragon was a better movie. More original, more heartwarming, more whimsical, more joyous, funnier, sweeter, more cute animal goodness. Just a better goddamn movie. Fuck you Pixar, I love you, but fuck you.

Posted by: Simon at January 25, 2011 9:43 AM

I think I just stole this. Brilliant.

Posted by: Odnon. at January 25, 2011 2:21 PM

I did not fall in love with Inception like most people did. The story was a bit empty for me and there were no surprises. But technically it did blow my mind, so Nolan getting snubbed is fucked up.

I'm happy that Javier Bardem and John Hawkes got noms. They soo deserve it.

Posted by: MissRos at January 25, 2011 2:34 PM

Amazed that I've seen 8 of the 10 BP noms already. But seriously, 127 Hours over The Town? Fail.

And hell yes John Hawkes for Winter's Bone. I mean, Bale should and will win. But Hawkes deserved the shit out of that nomination.

Just saw Black Swan this past week. Natalie Portman had better fucking win Best Actress. No joke. That movie blew my mind and she carried it hardcore. In fact, I would not be shocked if that won Best Picture. I'd actually be kind of pleased, even though I understand that The Social Network is logically a bigger, more historically important film.

And I'm pleased that Toy Story 3 is getting love outside of Animated Feature, as, if I'm honest, I think it's my favorite Pixar movie, which is to say the best animated movie I've ever seen. But Nolan for Original Screenplay? Couldn't we all agree that the screenplay was the weakest part of that movie (as much as I loved it)? And on the screenplay front, I hate Mike Leigh movies, and I'm pissed that he would get a nomination over, I don't know, anything else.

Thank god Tangled only got original song. I hated that stupid movie. I hated the song too, but the category automatically doesn't count because it doesn't include any of the songs from Scott Pilgrim (especially Beck's "Ramona," which is gorgeous).

I mean COME ON, Academy, you couldn't throw Scott Pilgrim an Art Direction nom? Sound? Editing? Something. I mean, The Wolfman got a nomination. THE WOLFMAN! It's fucking Norbit all over again.

Posted by: ChristianH at January 25, 2011 2:36 PM

Maybe I'm just not knowledgeable about this stuff, but how in the hell is the girl in True Grit a supporting actress? She's THE actress, she's in every damn scene!
It's HER story, right?

Someone please explain, because I don't get it.

Posted by: MyySharona at January 25, 2011 2:37 PM

P.S. Delayed reaction: I just noticed that none of the support from The Social Network got nominated. I mean, obviously Jesse Eisenberg was terrific, but Garfield and the rest were all stellar. Then again, I can't think of any of the supporting actor noms I would remove. Ruffalo at least deserves the nom to make up for the Zodiac snub.

Posted by: ChristianH at January 25, 2011 2:39 PM

@MyySharona

My understanding is that it's political and has to do with likelihood of winning. The studios decide who to put forward for what and sometimes downgrade the role to help their chances c.f Clooney for Syriana and, in the opposite direction, Meryl Streep as Best Actress for The Devil Wears Prada.

Posted by: Mrs. Julien at January 25, 2011 3:03 PM

I was so incredibly underwhelmed by Inception, so I really don't care that Christopher Nolan wasn't nominated. In fact, I think there are other movies that probably better deserve a Best Picture nod over it.

Also, grrrr for Andrew Garfield not getting a Best Supporting Actor nod. That is the snub I am angry about.
