The Spirit Awards, which celebrate the best in independent film, are handed out each year the night before the Oscars and are generally ignored by most. This year, they’ll be hosted by Joel McHale, which means they’ll still be largely ignored except for the McHale bits we all watch on YouTube the next day.

The nominations have been announced. They’re pretty much what you’d expect, which is to say: If it’s an indie film you’ve heard of in 2010, it’s probably been nominated.

So maybe it's because I haven't had a chance to see any of these films yet, but I'm very surprised by the lack of love given to Blue Valentine given everything I've heard about how it was filmed, how amazing the director was, and how incredible the performances are. Only one nod to Michelle?

My boyfriend Ryan is going to be upset. I'll do my best to console him.

...so let's nominate all famous people to ensure people will watch? Ok, just checking.

Daphne Rubin-Vega? As in... wait a minute...

::meandering the interwebs::

Wow, I had no idea. Now I'm curious. Oh, and by the way, how much does your life suck when you are credited for "Sex and the City" as "Baby Voiced Woman"?

She was the original Mimi in Rent. . .so. . .that's something!

Honestly, I'd have given a nod to the main guy (pastor) in The Last Exorcism before the young girl. If one was feeling so generous as to throw some nominations to that movie. The main character really sold it.

Why is Joel McHale in the photo for this? Is he in one of these movies? If so, which one is it!!??

Posted by: Eva at November 30, 2010 2:24 PM

Okay, forgive my only skimming the text (had to run to my bunk), so now I see he is hosting. But what is that picture from? I do not recall him getting cut up in Community?

Posted by: Eva at November 30, 2010 2:25 PM

I think that's from when he was on Pushing Daisies.

Winter's Bone should win everything. Even the awards it's not nominated for.

Posted by: Adam C at November 30, 2010 3:28 PM

Definitely from Pushing Daisies. It's from the episode "Bitches" from the first season. Before Community, before I knew or cared who McHale was.

Agreed Adam C, I just saw Winter's Bone last night and it is still haunting me.

am I the only one that thought The Kids Are All Right was just...alright? I was pretty let down.

Just happy to see Marwencol is getting some attention.
