The 2009 Golden Globe Nominations

Here are your 2009 Golden Globe nominations, brought to you by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. But before you start rambling about the idiocy of the HFPA, let’s remember one thing: They don’t make movies and television shows, they only choose which ones are best. They don’t always have an amazing pool of choices. And given the sheer amount of nominations, they basically just choose everything with a whiff of decency, which is probably why you see Sandra Bullock among the nominations. Twice. For two different films. Sandra Bullock. Sandra fucking Bullock. The star of Miss Congeniality. Let me put it another way: Sandra Bullock has the same number of nominations as Meryl Streep. And Matt Damon. And all she was doing in The Blind Side was an impression of Connie Britton in “Friday Night Lights.” And a bad one, at that.

Jesus.

How bad is it? Julia Roberts is also nominated for a mediocre performance in a mediocre movie.

That said, it’s good to see some love for The Hurt Locker and District 9, even if the latter is only in the screenplay category (where (500) Days was unfairly shut out, though it did get a nom for best comedy or musical). With the exception of Bullock’s two (2!) nominations, there’s no real surprises here, except perhaps Tobey Maguire for Brothers (which is deserved). I’m a little perplexed by the number of nominations for It’s Complicated. I haven’t seen it. But, come on: it’s a Nancy Meyers film.

Other notes: Clint Eastwood got a nomination for director, but not for his movie Invictus, while Lee Daniels got no director nom for Precious, but the movie did (I actually agree with that — Precious was good in spite of Daniels).

Anyway, quibble away.

As for the television side, it’s largely the same series and actors that have been nominated in past years, save for the addition of “Glee” and “Modern Family.” It’s good to see Jane Lynch among the nominees, but “Glee’s” Matthew Morrison is fairly close to a terrible actor who happens to have a good voice. I guess all that really matters, though, is that John Lithgow was nominated. All sins can be forgiven after that (so long as he wins).

Strange to see “Lost” not in the Best Drama category, considering that last season was one of its very best.

Wow...

Looks like 2009 is basically a push.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 15, 2009 9:12 AM

I think I can sum up my feelings for this with one word.

Blehhhhh....

Posted by: wsapnin at December 15, 2009 9:13 AM

And i call bullshit for yet another year for 'House' getting the nom. Here is every episode of 'House.'

Snark. Sarcasm. Uh Oh! This motherfucker is sick as fuck!! Sarcasm. Snark. Tests. Sarcastic Test. Somebody loves somebody, but in suffering silence. There is NO cure! House breaks the rules. Sarcasm. Staring into the distance...LIGHTBULB! Cure. Sarcasm.

Fucking suck it 'House'. Sons of Anrachy could easily be in your place.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 15, 2009 9:15 AM

No way!!! *insert movie here* totally deserved to be nominated! I am mad! *insert name here* acted circles around *insert name here* in *insert movie here*. This is just like *insert year here* when *insert name here* was up for *insert category here* and *insert name here* won! *insert movie here* is mediocre at best and the HFPA is showing its *insert racial/ageist/tasteless insult here*. This is an outrage! And what about *insert obscure foreign film name here*? Like that was better than *insert nominated foreign film name here*! I'll bet they didn't watch *insert very high percentage number here* of the films this year! Fuck you HFPA, you *insert horribly offensive insult here*!!!

Posted by: Kballs at December 15, 2009 9:18 AM

Congratulations to Anna Paquin for getting the annual 'Halle Berry - I Made Graphic Sex For Camera and Didn't Demand More Money' award. TruBlood is about as compelling as my grandfather's potatoe chip farts. And that bitch does the worst fucking accent this side of Sandra Bullock.

And yet ANOTHER snub for 'It's Always Sunny...' but, you know, why not? 'Entourage' sure is a fucking hoot! Fuck you Piven! Fuck you fat dude with the New York accent. Fuck you Mr. Dillon...Kevin's a better actor anyway. And fuck you curly-haired dude with the chick mouth/chick name. I hope you get raped in the shower by a janitor.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 15, 2009 9:21 AM

Kballs for the win.

Posted by: PissBoy at December 15, 2009 9:22 AM

Passing over Mary Louise Parker for "Weeds" is unacceptable. And no nomination for Katey Sagal in "SoA"? Are you fucking kidding me??

And when did these dipshits get to see "Sherlock Holmes" and "Nine"? And come ON...Avatar? For Best Drama? Really? Julia Roberts is nominated for the horrible "Duplicity" but nothing for Amy Adams or Emily Blunt in "Sunshine Cleaning"?

This list is beyond fucked.

Posted by: TylerDFC at December 15, 2009 9:26 AM

...and I wish I had posted before Kballs shut down the whole thing. Damn you, you magnificent bastard.

Posted by: TylerDFC at December 15, 2009 9:28 AM

I am just concentrating on the fact that Kathryn Bigelow was nominated and maybe if she wins, Clint Eastwood's smug, hacky head will explode.

Posted by: Claire at December 15, 2009 9:35 AM

I just saw Duplicity last night on DVD, and even though it was a mediocre movie, Clive Owen at least displayed charisma and charm and you actually gave a shit about his character (a small and unsatisfying shit that disappeared to the back of the bowl and made you wonder if you just imagined it, but a shit none the less). Julia Roberts, on the other hand, had dead eyes throughout the movie and phoned in her performance. Actually, that is too complementary. She faxed it in.

Fucking piece of shit awards. Why do I even bother getting worked up? Also, Chloe Sevigny is good on Big Love, but I would not say she's the best of the wives, and definitely not such a standout to warrant nomination to their exclusion.

I think West Wing and 30 Rock are the only shows that have been thoroughly lauded by Pajibans and also the weird-fucking-award-decider people.

Posted by: JJ McClay at December 15, 2009 9:36 AM

Also, on the bright side: at least there's no Two and a half Fucking Juvenile Misogynistic Screwball Sex-Addicted Commitment-Phobe Pathologically-Narcissistic Men.

Posted by: JJ McClay at December 15, 2009 9:37 AM

I'm torn between Neal Patrick Harris and Michael Emerson. They are both glorious and strange.

Posted by: ZombieNurse at December 15, 2009 9:43 AM

I’m a little perplexed by the number of nominations for It’s Complicated. I haven’t seen it. But, come on: It’s a Nancy Meyers’ film.

I'm more confused about how the buzz has totally been for Baldwin but Streep is the beneficiary for acting. Especially since there were no shortage of great comedic female performances this year: Deschanel for (500) Days of Summer, Lohman for Drag Me to Hell, Pfeiffer for Cheri - I could go on.

I'm equally excited and pissed off at the TV categories. On the one hand, Jane Lynch is going to win a Golden Globe for Glee; on the other hand, I would like to know just how many ice cream cones Elisabeth Moss has knocked out of the hands of voters' children to once again be ignored by the Globes for Mad Men. I mean, for once I thought January Jones had great material to work with and deserved the nomination, but the Globes won't jump on the Peggy bandwagon.

“Glee’s” Matthew Morrison is fairly close to a terrible actor, who happens to have a good voice

Them's fighting words. Glee isn't consistently giving him good material, but he's phenomenal when given anything to go off of. For example, his Tony-nominated performance was one of three things I liked about The Light in the Piazza (the other two? Victoria Clark's Tony-winning performance, and the score - the book is disastrous). He was great in Hairspray, too, in a pretty darn thankless role.

Posted by: Robert at December 15, 2009 9:46 AM

TylerDFC, there have been massive press screenings for Nine and Sherlock Holmes. Everyone's just been barred from reviewing them until a certain date. I got away with Nine talk because I saw it before they started handing out the scary NDAs. Sherlock Holmes is just a category filler, anyway.

Posted by: Robert at December 15, 2009 9:49 AM

What about Breaking Bad? Isn't that supposed to be the shit?

Its nestled between Deadwood and Oz at number 2 on my list of series to watch next year (my comedown from The Wire is finally over so I can embrace TV dramas once again!) but maybe I should bump it for Big Love or Mad Men instead?

Hmmmmm.....

Posted by: hh at December 15, 2009 9:51 AM

If "Up" doesn't win for Animated what-the-fuck somebody is getting a squirrel shoved somewhere!

SQUIRREL!

You're probably safe to keep Breaking Bad. It did get some very glowing reviews around here, though I haven't seen it personally. Funny you should mention The Wire because it never even received a single Golden Globes nomination in its entire run.

Posted by: branded at December 15, 2009 10:05 AM

The Globes are actually better than any other award ceremony, but that's not saying much. It really isn't fair to the other nominees if there weren't enough quality products in one year, and too many in another.

Posted by: George at December 15, 2009 10:16 AM

KBalls, you're a goddamn genius.

And it's the Golden Globes people. Not exactly the last bastion of taste and style, you know?

Posted by: John Denver's Wingman at December 15, 2009 10:24 AM

What the eff? They gave Sandra Bullock two nods and couldn't even give an acting nod to Zooey Deschanel? I'm playing the Rip-Off card!

*Takes out Rip-Off Card, hands it to the Golden Globe Committee*

You've been served, my good sir.

Posted by: Jeremy Feist at December 15, 2009 10:24 AM

So Tyler spotted that too . . I couldn't help but think that the movie list was an excellent example of marketing synergy.

Posted by: idiosynchronic at December 15, 2009 10:30 AM

Someone needs to go Nomad on the HFPA!

I second the love for Sons of Anarchy. It has been outstanding this year- Shakespearean even- and Katey Segal is absolutely knocking it out of the park. The fact that Charlie Hunnam (Jacks) is British makes his performance even more amazing.

Any show with half the cast of Deadwood is going to be good. I didn't even recognize Titus Welliver (delicious Adams) as Jimmy.

Posted by: BananaPanda at December 15, 2009 10:32 AM

Right on, BananaPanda!

*High Five* (No? That's cool.)

I totally agree about Katey Segal. She's great on that show I haven't watched yet but totally will soon. I promise. By the way, that person that keeps calling you and breathing heavily then hanging up, definitely isn't me.

Posted by: jM at December 15, 2009 11:01 AM

Now, don't get me wrong, District 9 was my absolute favorite movie this year, but does it really deserve to be nominated in a screenplay slot? I thought that in an interveiw with the director, he said that most of it had been improvised. I mean, I'm happy it got a nom, but it just seems sort of... out of place there.

Posted by: Moi at December 15, 2009 11:29 AM

The list is definitely fucked, but after Sunday's finale, I'm willing to let Dexter and Michael C. Hall take the TV awards. Jeezum crow.

Posted by: Snath at December 15, 2009 11:47 AM

I CAN'T believe this has become, for all intents and purposes, "Sandra Bullock's YEAR." that's how lackluster the entertainment at her level has become.

I wouldn't be surprised if she won the Oscar, they're really marketing her for it. This woman had become just "Jesse James' girlfriend" only two years ago.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 15, 2009 11:55 AM

BSlim,

"Jesse James' (the guy who married a now-incarcerated pornstar) girlfriend"

There. Fixed that for you.

Posted by: Kballs at December 15, 2009 11:56 AM

Thank you, the omission was inexcusable.

Posted by: BarbadoSlim at December 15, 2009 12:01 PM

Oh NPH and John Lithgow - Lithgow was amazing on Dexter. Also yay hangover and modern family..and wtf the proposal...?

Posted by: eden at December 15, 2009 12:06 PM

Oh, I don't know...Matthew Morrison blew me away when Will found out about Terri's fake pregnancy. Seriously gave me chills with how angry he was. And then his crying over the phone at sectionals. I didn't think much of him before then, but dang, those were some good acting moments.

And I saw like...3 new movies in 2009 so I can't comment on the movie categories.

Posted by: figgy at December 15, 2009 12:25 PM

Interesting that the Animated Feature category is far more interesting than the Best Drama.

Posted by: logar at December 15, 2009 12:37 PM

What the f is with all the nominations for NINE? cripes.. it's 36% on rotten tomatoes. IT'S COMPLICATED is a stupid romcom but it as Streep & Baldwin who are funny as balls.

NINE looks like a hunk of junk. Fellini could've pooped a better movie than NINE.

Posted by: The Golden Globes suck at December 15, 2009 12:39 PM

For film nominations, I'm beginning (excuse my tardiness) to think they're chosen the moment they begin production. For that matter, maybe they begin even from conception. I don't think I care anymore.

I do usually enjoy the good television kudos, only I cannot take this year seriously with no Breaking Bad nominations.

Posted by: Cindy at December 15, 2009 12:50 PM

Yeah, the more I hear about NINE the more I think it just might suck.

This confirms it.

(Yet, I'm still gonna see it 'cause I'm DDL's bitch)

Posted by: kayla at December 15, 2009 1:20 PM

I'm VERY excited about La Nana (The Maid) getting a nomination. I hope it wins.

Posted by: Sofía at December 15, 2009 1:38 PM

I'm also annoyed that no one has recognized Ed Helms' brilliance yet. His work as Andy is consistently outstanding. Too bad he doesn't get more to do on the show.

Posted by: figgy at December 15, 2009 2:51 PM

The actress who plays Precious is Gabourey Sidibe. Not Gabire Sadibe.

Posted by: Astrid at December 15, 2009 3:25 PM

Sandra fucking Bullock was amazing as Leigh Anne Tuohy and DESERVES that nomination no matter how bitter people feel about it. It's a true life story represented very well. Amazing movie i must say and I cant imagine some other actress doing this movie as well as she did!

She was also really good and funny in The Proposal. There is a comedy/musical actress performance, which I dont undertand why then people have such problems for her nomination. It was one of the biggest hits of the year thanks to her!

So, CONGRATULATIONS TO SANDRA BULLOCK ON HER 2! NOMINATIONS! :D

Posted by: daniela at December 15, 2009 4:34 PM

Well, I for one am really excited that the great Stanley Tucci got nominated for 'The Lovely Bones'; he's the best thing about that movie (which I saw this past weekend). The film's been unduly trashed - it's really beautiful and moving, and Tucci's performance alone is worth the price of admission.

I do wish he'd also been nominated for 'Julie&Julia', but I guess his performance was so nuanced and natural that it was easy to pass over. Playing a serial killer gets more attention in Hollyweird.

Posted by: Ginger at December 15, 2009 5:06 PM

It is inexfuckingscusable that Lost was overlooked. Not only overlooked, but not nominated OVER fucking House. Seriously, when was the last time that show was any good? I stopped watching that shit ages ago. If it wasn't for Hugh Laurie, no one would watch it. Just keep giving him the acting nods, all well-deserved, and leave the rest of the show out of it.

Sorry, end rant. On a positive note -- very pleased with the Lithgow & Bigelow noms.

Anyone else very disappointed with the early reviews of Nine being so shit-tastic? How the hell could they have fucked that movie up?! DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, people!

Posted by: Cruise at December 15, 2009 6:24 PM

Safe?
SAFE??!!
Breaking Bad ranks right up there with Cracker...it defines "must see TV".

Bryan Cranston (deservedly) gets most of the accolades but watch Aaron Paul in "Peekaboo" (S2-E6)to see the true heart of the series.

"Safe"...bah.
Watch House if you want safe.

Posted by: clocker at December 15, 2009 7:17 PM

House? Really? House? Sons of Anarchy and Lost had episodes this season that were among the best episodes of television I have ever seen and they nominate House? I don't mind the Bullock love so much as the double nomination of Streep in the same goddamn category! The same goddamn category! I mean come on, nobody voted for Zoey Deschanel for 500 Days of Summer? Admittedly I have not seen Brothers but I cannot fathom Tobey Maguire deserving that nod over Jeremy Renner. It's Complicated for screenplay over 500 Days of Summer? Oscar will right that wrong is all I can tell myself. Best Supporting Actor TV is gonna be a whale of a fight, Emerson! Harris! Lithgow! Piven...?!?!?! Really? Still? I just hope he doesn't win.

Posted by: Alex at December 15, 2009 8:26 PM

Only one who things Fringe needs some love :-( *pout*

Posted by: Luke at December 15, 2009 10:20 PM

Kballs wins. But I'm gonna moan and way.

LOST has a really good season and doesn't get a nomination, while Entourage has a really horrible season and gets a nomination (I know there in 2 different categories but still could've put in Community).

Sam Rockwell's performance in Moon? Anyone?

All I know is Modern Family better win.

Posted by: Littlejon2001 at December 16, 2009 12:29 AM

Interesting that the Animated Feature category is far more interesting than the Best Drama

I'm with you, logar. Looking at the other categories, this year was clearly a poor year for movies - but it had some really amazing animation. I loved "Up," and "Coraline," and can't imagine choosing between them. I actually loved "The Princess and the Frog," and think it shows a wonderful return to form for Disney. I haven't seen "Fantastic Mr. Fox," but it's supposed to be great....

For years, it's been Pixar (rightfully) running away with it, but this year seems like they finally have some real competition. Which is wonderful. (I loved "Ponyo," too, come to think of it.) Rarely have I enjoyed so many movies I saw with my kids.

Posted by: Edith at December 16, 2009 2:35 AM

Sam Rockwell's performance in Moon? Anyone?

Concur. Although I really don't see him winning (Jeremy Renner is too good), a nomination would've been nice.

Posted by: sailboat at December 16, 2009 5:32 AM

"True Blood?" Anna Paquin? And January Jones was horrible this season!

Sigh. I need to just give up.
