Wanna See CGI Schwarzenegger in Salvation Without Having to See the Movie?

Here’s a little one-off.

Trailer Addict has tracked down what is apparently the only TV spot that actually contains images of Schwarzenegger’s CGI appearance in Terminator Salvation. Personally, I thought the Arnie footage was moronic — campy in an otherwise deadly serious movie (if the rest of the movie had been equally cheesy, I’d have had less reason to complain and probably would’ve liked the movie considerably more). But if you haven’t seen Terminator Salvation and you’re smart enough not to waste your money on it, but would still like to catch a glimpse of Arnold from the movie, check out this spot and save yourself a few dollars.

Man, those CG gyms do wonders!

Okay, I gotta know. Is it really Arnold??? It honestly looks nothing like him. Like not even a bad CGI version of him. I thought it was a look-alike. That guy from the See Arnold Run movie. Tell me how this Arnold is a CGI one. Look at the face and compare it to a picture of my Arnold and tell me it isn't him. I need to know!

You know, that scene just settled right into my uncanny valley and started a farm.

If you want to say an "otherwise serious movie," that's o.k., but I wouldn't use the word "deadly" in a movie in which the "Terminators" barely do any "terminating." Almost the whole movie is a joke, and - campy though it might have been - seeing the CGI Arnold made me smile, if only because it recalls what good Terminator movies were like. Plus, for just a split second when he smacks that door off its frame, it seemed like Skynet finally meant business.

Looked like everything that was wrong with "The (Incredible) Hulk"

It is supposed to be Roland Kickinger who plays the T-800...the guy who has played Arnold before. If I'm a betting man though I would say it is Kickingers body with a CGI Arnold face.

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 4, 2009 6:37 PM

After consulting imdb and google image search, I'm gonna have to say I agree with DeistBrawler. It's Kickinger's body (the height's a give away, Arnold is 6'2", Kickinger is 6'5" and the body in that trailer is MASSIVE) but they've screwed around with the face a bit to make it more similar to T1 Arnold.

I'd say you're welcome, but I'm not even going to pretend that was an unenjoyable diversion.

I'm just back from seeing this actually. And let me tell you, banality, thy name is McG. What kind of a name is Mc fuckin G anyway? If you sound like you belong on a fast food menu then you have no business being let direct a film, let alone run a once kick ass franchise into the ground. Prick.

Posted by: sheepeyes at June 4, 2009 7:02 PM

Arnie's 6'2" like I'm Heidi Klum.

Posted by: Susquehana at June 4, 2009 7:14 PM

Susquehana, I kinda went "really?" at that one too, but I'm just reporting what the internet tells me. I doubt he's much over 6'.

Posted by: Genny (also Rusty) at June 4, 2009 7:27 PM

Arnold is 6'2", Kickinger is 6'5"
Sweet, I'm taller than Arnold and shorter than Kickinger...I should either be an action star, or work in horror movies...yes!!!!

Posted by: DeistBrawler at June 4, 2009 7:45 PM

I don't think that looks bad at all. If it were a good film, we'd all be geeking out over that bit.

Oh, and Arnie's 5'10" or so. He was going to be cast as the Hulk in the TV show, but Kenneth Johnson's son pointed out he was too short.

This is the part of the movie I hated the worst. I saw this because of my love of the Terminator franchise (3 never happened) and Christian Bale (who I thought would've been MUCH better as Marcus).

As a musician, my biggest gripe was not using the original soundtrack. When they did, they only used the percussive hits (like eating a burger with no meat). When "Arnold" appeared and they played the iota of the original soundtrack it just had the feel of a WWE wrestler about to enter the ring. It was almost like it was put there so a certain someone could say "aw, hell yeah! He about to whoop yo' ass!" Disappointing.

All the T4 hate, sigh. So much hate. Whatever.

Posted by: doom70 at June 4, 2009 10:40 PM

Like i said before on T4's review, they should've stayed the hell away from CG for what amounts to a 3 minute shot.

While it's commendable that they actually tried to make arnie look like '84 arnie but, if this is the final product then they realy should've gotten a different guy.

Remember when Kyle was reminiscing in T1? They had dogs to detect the T-800s? That wasn't Arnie!

Somehow the entire T-800 series is modeled after Arnie when Cameron clearly pointed out that they are different molds available.

But then again, what happened to advancements in make-up tech? (Anyone remember crispy Claire?)

Why couldn't they get Arnie to do the scene with Rick Baker and just a pinch of CG for touch-ups?

Oh, dats right! He was too busy being the Governator. He just dropped in for a head scan and that was it!

T4 being the pointless movie it is, was still gorgeous to look at. The CG shots were really amazing. All except one.......

Arnold was better as a bad guy. He sent a message to the youth of my era, that being bad pays. I looked up to him in Terminator as a role model. He set the standard for how to be a bad ass and unstoppable killing machine. Now he is governor. That just shows that being a bad guy will get you far in life.

They pulled out the full body cast of Arnold from the very first Terminator, and did a 3D scan. They used an actor in a bodysuit for motion capture, and merged it with the 3D scan of Schwarzenegger's body cast.

I have to agree w/ DarthCorleone: the CGI Arnold was perhaps the best performance in the whole movie and its only terrifying moment.

Posted by: Trey_Shacksit at June 6, 2009 9:43 AM

Man, that CGI was horrible. Anyone who thinks it was good is an idiot.

That CGI was not horrible. You shouldn't judge their work by seeing only 3 seconds of what they've done.

By the way, it's quite advanced for the "standard" quality that we have nowadays.

Now, just because you're all fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger and now you know it's not the real person acting, you feel offended and flame all this wonderful CG work.
I'm quite sure people wouldn't really mind it at all if the productors kept their mouths shut and just didn't surprise everyone BEFORE the film was released.
In my view, that's pretty immature coming from you guys.

Well... all I can say is that it's funny how things work.

You know this movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? Benjamin's head was completely CG rendered, but most of people didn't even wonder about that.
From my experience, I saw people thinking that the film looked great... just until they knew the thruth and change their opinion (in a bad way).
Honestly, I cannot understand that. So it means that computer graphics is offensive, right?

Nonsense.
