Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger

I like hardcore music. Punk rock. Screamo. Death metal. That’s basically all I’m listening to these days. But you know what else?

I fucking love Daft Punk, the French electronica group composed of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Cristo. Their bizarre, wildly innovative music routinely blows me away. When I heard that they were doing the score for the upcoming Tron Legacy, my interest level ratcheted up about 300%. Now that I’ve seen some footage, and the trailers, I’m downright giddy.

And now we’ve got a taste of that soundtrack and score. Below we’ve got ten minutes of music from the score for Tron Legacy, by Daft Punk. Apparently, they’ll be releasing two albums when the film comes out in December — one that is the full score to the film, one of music that they created for the Tron universe. Whatever. I love it.

Never thought I'd hear you say that. But, then again, never thought I agree with you about this kind of thing either. Only thing left is to start loving Moxie Frouvous...

Dammit, why'd you have to remind me? I was having a decent morning. Does it sound like Daft Punk?

Posted by: Jay at July 30, 2010 9:23 AM

I only have one question: why is it only 10 minutes?! I want to play it on a loop all day in the office. Fantastic.

I'll be honest, I was already pretty excited to see this movie. Now? I'm dying. Is it December yet?

Daft Punk's Alive 07 is one of the best albums ever made ever.

I cannot wait for this.

TK, you might also like Amon Tobin. He's recently scored the Splinter Cell and InFamous games, and his albums range from techno/jazz to his newer album Foley Room, which is techno/found sounds. Hard to explain. YouTube for "The Lighthouse" or "Kitchen Sink"

Twig - way ahead of you, though I haven't picked up Foley Room yet. I basically listened to Out From Out Where nonstop for about six straight months a couple of years ago.

This youtube channel certainly has been making the rounds.
Not to sound like a killjoy... but i'm pretty sure this is fake.
The quality and sound design of these tracks is nowhere near the level of their production as of late.
Nor do these sound remotely close to the stuff Daft Punk put together for the proof of concept tests.

This sounds more like some kid "doing" Daft Punk, than Daft Punk.
They're really pushing in some new directions with the Tron tracks, and these are just a poor mimicry of the old Daft Punk "greatest hits" sound.

Plus, i might add that these tracks aren't nearly French enough! ;)

My friends, my fellow ('Jiban) conscripts, we have scored. I feel so much better.

Jay, would you rather it be The JonASS brothers or Hannah MOUNTana?
Besides, When was the last time Jean-Michael Jarre did something?

Where does the contract say it needs to be a gimmicky pop score?

I'm counting down to having the biggest steak available and plenty of beer before going to see this movie. I will savor this day!

Just once, I'd like for Fredo to do the sucking. I'm just saying, it's not exactly an equitable relationship.

It seems that nowadays, whenever a less than mainstream music act writes a badass film score, they are deemed ineligible for original score at the Oscars. Last year was Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) for Where the Wild Things Are using "Worried Shoes" and allegedly (see: not at all) basing the rest of the music on that song (see: total bullshit). The year before that was Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead) for There Will Be Blood using too much (see: one cue) of Beethoven (see: bullshit). Similar shenanigans occurred with Bjork and Dancer in the Dark and like situations where a contemporary recording artist scores film better than longtime professionals. It's elitist bs that regularly screws up the category; the ineligibility is announced after the nomination votes are in, meaning a top voter getter could be out, really messing up all the ballots from the music branch off.

I'm predicting that the Academy will somehow deem Daft Punk's Tron: Legacy score too based in the original film's score or too similar to "Mary had a Little Lamb" to be eligible. This disqualification will be announced five minutes before the nominations are announced. As a result, a cage will be filled with wild game of various sizes outfitted with a slip of paper naming a possible film score nominee. Ted Nugent will be invited to open the cage and shoot five of the critters down in under a minute. If he so fails, only the first three dead will be nominated.

You don't want to know how they choose the winner under Plan B.

Over at the boingboing comments on this story a few people pointed out that this was likely fake because it doesn't match the music you hear if you go to the official movie site (once you get past the intro page, there's a player at the top that starts out saying "track 1", and you can click the arrows to hear other tracks). This site seems to have ripped the tracks from the official site so you can listen to them as standalone mp3s, they sound a lot more moody and "sountrack-ish" than the fake ones.

I absolutely love it. Every post about Tron that I see here just makes me want to see that film more and more and more.

The Daft Punk`s leaked tracks have overtaken the official tracks on youtube.

After the dissapointed fan´s reaction seems that the "leaked tracks" hits on youtube.

Daft Punk could have leaked intentionally their tracks when Disney reject them for be too much rithmical.
