Take Your Turtle Power And...

OK, let’s get the geek stuff out of the way right off the bat. Way back in the day, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was actually a pretty gritty, badass, kind of subversive little comic. Originally created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, they were surprisingly violent and very, very dark.

And then that goddamn cartoon came out, and things went to shit from there. Next thing we know there’s cereal boxes and toys and horrible, horrible video games and Turtle-mobiles and …

Shudder

Regardless,a reboot/origin story is being filmed by Mirage Studios, who own the property, set to release in 2011. And it’s going to be a live-action film, which I pretty much think is a horrible idea, but who the hell ever listens to me? Actually, the animated film that came out in 2007, TMNT, wasn’t half bad. It softened the darkness of the original series, but it was reasonably intelligent and not-annoying. Better for the producers to build off of that, but…

Ah well. At least we know it can’t get any worse:

I’m so, so sorry.

Boy, the sound in that video did not mesh well with the Aqualung playing in the background AT ALL. My fault for pressing play.

maybe this time they can get dicaprio to play leonardo?

The stupid as shit live action 1990 movie gets a pass from me for one reason only. It potty trained my son. No. Really. He found the copy of this that Mr. Lower had tucked away as a sad remnant of his youth. My son was long past needing to be out of diapers, so, when he insisted on watching it, I told him that it was a big boy movie and he needed to use the potty before he could see it. He was trained in one day. Yeah, I bribed him. Deal.

I remember my parents buying me the graphic novel of the original TMNT comics, thinking it would be like the cartoon version. Seeing Leonardo impale Shredder on his katana (after Shredder beats the turtles to bloody pulps) blew my fucking mind.

It's actually the 25th anniversary of the comics release this year. In honor today, the Empire State Building is being lit up green, and there is a "galabunga" planned.

slower lower - That is BRILLIANT!!! My little girl is about to start potty training and LOVES Blue's Clues.
This idea reminds me of Brian Kessler considering taking Early and Adele on the road with him. Could be good, could be bad, results may vary. Granted, my life isn't in danger, but you never know . . .

Posted by: Kballs at April 23, 2009 10:50 AM

. . . and she hasn't seen the Blue's Clues movie yet. Forgot that part.

Posted by: Kballs at April 23, 2009 10:52 AM

Don't forget the action figures, which I owned.

Vanilla Ice is a relic of our shameful past.

There is no way you just called the video games horrible. Okay, so maybe the original game for NES was horrible (and impossible), but fuck you if you think Turtles in Time was shit. Best Ninja Turtles game ever.

Posted by: Snath at April 23, 2009 11:13 AM

Are you kidding?! That original NES game was fantastic! And impossible.

"Leonardo got caught, who fights next?"

Posted by: Lyan at April 23, 2009 11:30 AM

There was no reason to have different characters, they all did the same thing. Jump, spin, repeat.

I admit, it's a little nostalgic, but I tried playing an emulated version just last month, and realized how bad it was.

hopefully this means corey feldman will put his music career on hold for a little bit

The Turtles arcade game was awesome! It played very similarly to the side-scrolling X-Men arcade game. You had to pump in $5 worth of quarters to beat it, but still. The original NES game was awful.

I love, with all my heart, the first Ninja Turtles movie. If you insult it, you will answer to a bat in your fucking face.

Assuming you're not a stupid, tasteless dick, watch it again as an adult without any kids around, and see what you think. It's a great adventure movie along the lines of Goonies or Big Trouble in Little China.

Posted by: Lucas at April 23, 2009 1:15 PM

I miss that side-scrolling X-Men arcade game. I saw one in St. Louis that was in 3-D with huge screens when? 1989? Sheesh.

I wish they would reboot that game and put it back in the arcade. Dave and Buster's, get on that. I will pour money into my power card if the game play can match the powers. It must be better than the movies and none of the X-men may look like any of the actors. With Flying. Also make the movement a little different like do the characters in Samurai Showdown.

I was never for the Ninja Turtles game even though I really liked all the movies. If I was in a Pizza Hut, I was on the Mrs. Pacman or Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Posted by: Jackseppelin at April 23, 2009 1:34 PM

Screw you, TK, the TNMT game was badass and impossible and argh that game. Remember when you had to swim underwater and the algae would kill you?

Damn I loved that game. We used to go crazy over it.

And the cartoon was the shit. And I loved the movies. So yeah. Screw you. I'm gonna go dance the Ninja Rap now.

Posted by: figgy at April 23, 2009 1:34 PM

NO. No. Do not hate on the Ninja Turtles movies (except maybe the third one where they went back in time). Maybe they just happened to come out in the exact right time of my life, but they are definitely classics and are definitely movies I quote in everyday life.

And the video games? Were awesome. Michelangelo's kangaroo kick in the Manhattan Project was the balls.

I promise I'm not RickRolling you:

That shit brought me back approximately 15 years.

Posted by: Bequafina at April 23, 2009 1:39 PM

A Jose Conseco bat? Tell me you didn't pay money for that.

Posted by: slower lower at April 23, 2009 1:55 PM

Did I just see some pelvic thrusting in that vid? This was a kid's movie, right?

Reminds me of a ad we saw in the movie theater that featured "Family Hour" on some channel, with the first installment consisting of a brave samurai warrior girl avenging her family, and many, many knifings and swords-to-the-gut. "This is family hour?" my friend said in amazement. "WHOSE FAMILY?"

The crotch should never be emphasized in a kiddie flick. FOR SHAME, VANILLA ICE.

Those movies were awesome! My brother and I used to watch them at least once a week when we were kids. In fact, we loved the TMNT so much we had most of the toys, including the blimp and the pizza thrower. Anyone remember those? We had hours of fun shooting those little plastic pizzas at each other. Good times with dangerous toys.

Posted by: stardust savant at April 23, 2009 4:46 PM

A JOSE CANSECO BAT?

Posted by: Hurp Durp at April 23, 2009 6:30 PM

Turtles in time was the greatest arcade game of it's time. I learned to talk shit playing that game, so you skeezy mothafuckas lay off.

Posted by: Smatt584 at April 24, 2009 1:14 AM

It's another generational thing. I freakin' LOVE TMNT, the movies, the games, and the cheesy motherfucking toys!!!!!!!

Every movie is a million times better if you saw it as a kid. So it was with the Turtles, dude. TK, I assume you were just too old for these when they came out. For some of us, the whole franchise was childhood gold.

My brother had the turtle truck that shot the pizzas out. Gawd, I loved that thing!!! I actually used it to play with my Barbies. lolz.

And, Bequafina, that video really took me back!

Posted by: AgoGo at April 24, 2009 2:12 AM

Okay, but I forgot to say:

Vanilla Ice, what a CHODE!!!

Posted by: AgoGo at April 24, 2009 2:21 AM

Oh yeah, the six-player X-Men arcade game rocks. I beat it at Disney World one time as Nightcrawler all by myself (except right at the end when a friend of mine joined as Wolverine).

Posted by: Lucas at April 24, 2009 1:00 PM

i grew up with ninja turtles i liked all the movies. and the original cartoon. i don't like the new cartoon series because theres' no turlte blimp or turle van and no krang.
