Disappointed!

I’m Not Sure We Can Hug this Out / Seth Freilich

Ok Dustin. God forbid some of us try keep our real jobs so we can put food on the table and pay our cable and internet bills. But whatever. You want your TV Whore tv news? Fine. Here. Suck it.

Several times, we’ve talked about the “Cupid” remake that’s in ABC’s pipeline. Creator Rob Thomas decided to redo his show and, with the greenlight from ABC, cast Bobby Cannavale in the role of the (maybe) love god formerly played by Jeremy Piven. Which I thought was a pretty good play. Sarah Paulson, in the role of the shrink played originally by Paula Marshall, I was more skeptical of.

Anyway, the newly-released teaser does not have me terribly excited. Granted, this video was probably cut by some network yahoo, rather than Thomas or someone close to the show, so you can’t trust the tone. But the problem for me is that, watching it, I just keep picturing Piven and Marshall. And missing them. I’ll still try the show when it comes on whenever next year ABC decides to air (probably in the spring), but I’m not sure I’m going to be able to get over the hurdle.

Hmm! That case must really be getting to you. It takes a very distressed mind to miss Jeremy Piven.

Yeaaaah, this looks, how do you say, not funny. That said, I think the idea of Cupid being a perpetually horny little punk could work.

Goddamnit, I really loved that show and that teaser looks terrible.

I still have it on VHS and watch the, occasionally (I don't know how to put things on YouTube), and I recognized some of the lines in this as verbatim from the original.

I do love Bobby Canavale though. He was the greatest cross-dressing psycho to ever burn a bitch's face with acid.

Yeah, I keep seeing Piven and Marshall in those roles, too. I will probably give this a try, though.

Oh I loved the original show. I really crushed hard on Piven back then and it hurt me so bad to find out later what a dickwad he apparently is. There was an episode where Lisa Loeb guest starred and sang the song "Happy Together". Everything about that episode made me happy.

Unfortunately, I can't view videos at work so I can't really see how bad the trailer sucks (despite the presence of Bobby Cannavale, whom I adore). Which is a good thing, I suppose, since it would only serve to me make miss the original that much more.

I don't know, I think I have to disagree.

I'm not wowed by the trailer (and do agree with the whole "network yahoo" theory) but despite the fact that the original was a pretty good show, I never thought it had anything to do with Paula Marshall who I generally find shrill and unwatchable.

Sarah Paulson, pound for pound is a far better actress (and comedienne)than Marshall. I've always wanted Paulson to hit it big and hoped Studio 60, where she really got an opportunity to stretch her wings would be it, but alas it was not to be...so maybe this can be it...?

As for Piven, he was good on Cupid, but has been pretty annoying for the last several years, whereas Bobby Cannavale has never (and probably never will be) annoying to me...so how can this be bad?

Let's all give it a shot, eh?

I love Bobby Canavale quite a bit. And Sarah Paulson rocked her 90 seconds of screentime in Serenity. And I frickin' ADORED Veronica Mars. So on balance, this should be 'one to watch' for me. But...I dunno...I just can't get particularly excited about it. It just looks kinda stupid. Pity, really...

Someone uploaded all of the original show's episodes on Youtube if you are interested. Jeremy Piven can never be considered annoying because of that show. Nothing I have encountered, read, watched, or experienced have shaped my views on life and love more than Cupid.

Granted, I was 13.

Also, Alan Sepinwall reviewed all of the episodes over last summer. Rob Thomas chimed in with his commentary on them, as well.

It doesn't look as good as the original, but come on, it still looks more enjoyable than most shows. Bobby Cannavale! He's always worth watching!

Also, I'm actually surprised that they actually billed it with "From the creator of 'Veronica Mars'." Looks like ABC knows what a draw that is for people who appreciate good television.

Call me a drunken nutbag (it wouldn't be entirely untrue). But this looks like fun.

Also Sarah Paulson is the shit.

I don't really like The Piv...but damn can that little bitch act.

I'm also glad ABC was smart enough to throw in the VM connection. I will watch anything Rob Thomas puts on the air. I just pray the network douches are smart enough to let him do his job and not meddle with what doesn't need fixing.

I really loved Jeremy Piven as Cupid - I'm not sure why we can't have Piven and Paulson? This made me want to go watch my crappy illegal dvd's of the series that I bought off ebay.
