Taran Killam Responds to Controversy Over SNL's ISIS Sketch

I didn’t initially think that much of SNL’s ISIS sketch over the weekend, to be honest. I thought it was a little off key, but I wasn’t bothered by it. Mostly, I thought it was just a great set-up to a not-so-great punchline, not because it was offensive, but because I didn’t think it was particularly funny (I will grant, however, that it’s slightly more funny in retrospect).

There were some, however, on Twitter, who didn’t find it funny at all. I’d offer you countless examples, but let’s be honest, you can find people on social media who get offended by ANYTHING, and sometimes we go a little too far in trying to generate controversy by using social media to demonstrate online outrage. Take, for example, the Daily Beast, who used a couple of comments on YOUTUBE to generate controversy about the interracial relationship between Will Smith and Margot Robbie. We’re giving voice to YouTube racists now? Suggesting that YouTube commenters are representative of humanity is like saying Victoria Jackson is representative of the Republican party.

Anyway, suffice to say that there was enough controversy surrounding the ISIS sketch to prompt Taran Killam — who starred in the sketch with Dakota Johnson — to respond on Twitter in a most amusing manner.

And because I want to, I will use the first response to Killam’s Tweet to suggest that it was representative of all of Twitter.

Personally, I’m just glad that SNL is still capable of pissing people off every once in a while. It’s been a very long time since the show upset anyone except those who appreciate good comedy.
