It’s been reported that Tao Okamoto has been cast in season three of Hannibal in a major role. Some spoilers below for those familiar with previous Lecter films and books.

*SPOILERS*

Okamoto will be playing Lady Murasaki, a character who only appeared in the truly terrible Hannibal Rising, so my dear hope that the “canon” for the show would stop at the novel Hannibal (also not great, but it had its moments) has been dashed. However, given that Hannibal’s early years in the books and previous movies took place against the background of the end of WWII and the advance of the Red Army, I am wondering how that will fit with the show’s modern setting. Mads Mikkelsen obviously isn’t old enough to have personally witnessed the creation of the USSR the end of WWII. Thank you to our kind and intelligent commenters for catching that.

*END SPOILERS*

There is still no word on a release date for the third season of Hannibal but given that we’re still hearing casting announcements, I’d anticipate sometime in the Spring of 2015.

Okamoto will also be playing Lex Luthor’s assistant, Mercy, in the upcoming Batman vs. Superman movie. Okamoto’s no stranger to super hero movies, given her previous work on The Wolverine. Here’s hoping that this time her character works as something more than a living MacGuffin that can also act as a romantic interest.
