Theorizing that one could avenge within his own lifetime, Mr. Seth Freilich stepped into the Murdertank and vanished ...

God. Damn. It.

The wonderful nerds over at io9 interviewed this dude Mark Stern, who’s the Director of Original Programming over at the Syfy-Channel-what-used-to-be-the-SciFi-Channel-Before-Yesterday. In talking about the network’s attempts to reboot “Alien Nation” with “Firefly’s” Tim Minear, Stern dropped this bomb:

So that worked. I would love to find our time travel show — whether it’s literally Quantum Leap — and we’ve been talking to Don Bellisario [show creator] about [doing] that as a possibility, because what is the next really great time travel series.

Fuuuuuh-uuuuh-uuuuuuuck you.

Look see. I recognize that “Quantum Leap” wasn’t perfect. I recognize that some of the episodes do not hold up well (though a surprisingly vast majority of them do). I recognize that the DVD company pooched the whole fucking thing by being too cheap to license “Georgia on My Mind” for the “M.I.A.” episode. I recognize that the series finale was a clusterfucking, borderline-nonsensical mess. And I get that the show was almost entirely and singularly of Don Bellisario’s vision. I get it.

And I also get that I don’t have the best perspective on this show, because I’m way too personally attached. “Quantum Leap” is the first show I obsessed over. I recorded a number of the shows when it was still on NBC and then decided to step up my game by recording the whole series off of USA reruns. In order, despite the fact that they weren’t often aired in order. On VHS. So I’d have to time out these multiple hour gaps on taps to fill episodes in later. I was ridiculous about it. I worshiped this show. Still do.

But even if I didn’t, and with or without Donny B at the helm, the show should not be touched, remade or rebooted. The magic of Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell in that moment of time, which is absolutely what made the show what it was, can not be recaptured no matter what you do or how you try it. Syfy, you want time travel, fine. Start something new. Don’t rape my baby, please.

(And for the record, that Bakula didn’t get the Emmy win for the “Shock Theater” episode is a travesty, even if he did lose to James Earl Jones.)

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I...just....no.

Ugh. God I love that show. The Vietnam eps when he sees Al! The ones with Jimmy!

Also that one where Al is the devil scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

I need to go steal my bro's boxsets and watch them again.

Also, because I haven't said it yet, SyFy is possibly the single most stupid name I have ever seen for anything. It's like an insult to those of us who like SCI-FI! If we gave a damn about being cool we wouldn't be watching your channel in the first place.

mmmm bak-u-la

Dude.

Also: Bakula? No. Blacula? Yes.

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at July 8, 2009 10:39 AM

Okay, you know what? If they are so goddamn embarrassed of being known as the SCI-FI Channel, then they shouldn't be allowed to continue broadcasting science fiction material.

That was the whole reason their fucking channel existed, and since they want to change the name for no real reason other than "the meatheads who want more ECW don't like it", then they can't continue to use stuff like QL and Twilight Zone as their backbone.

Posted by: Vermillion at July 8, 2009 10:43 AM

Oh boy. (Had to be said)

Posted by: branded at July 8, 2009 10:56 AM

i was going to cut and paste the same section that tracer bullet did, but he beat me to the punch. that's some serious dedication on your behalf.

i haven't had time to look at the other article about 'remakes of the future' yet, but i can imagine a reimagining of 'the big fan'...seth plays the role of patton oswald, but instead of it being about a football player-it's about blacula.

Posted by: gem at July 8, 2009 11:05 AM

They should reboot Sliders, that yea would be gareat.

Posted by: zito at July 8, 2009 11:13 AM

branded, I love you. I was thinking the same thing.

Item #1: SyFy is fucking stupid. Ok? We KNOW you show Science Fiction shows, that's why we watch. We KNOW you can't copyright the name "Sci Fi," and we really don't give a hot shit. We still watch.

Item #2: "Quantum Leap" was awesome. You know it, I know it, hell, Godtopus even hangs out with Ziggy. It. Should. Remain. Untouched. Fuck it up, you misspelling motherpusbuckets, and the full wrath of Pajiba will be on your heads. And, you DON'T want that!

Item #3: Scott Bakula was/is/always will be hot.

End of items, and hopefully end of the talk of this TRAVESTY!!! Pajibans UNITE!

oh, and I love that picture mashup so much I want to stick it under my desk in my cube and let it service me.

Posted by: dammitjanet at July 8, 2009 11:23 AM

This is probably when I shouldn't mention that I've never seen an episode. I'll just quietly pack up my things and go.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at July 8, 2009 11:38 AM

I gotta say...this doesn't really upset me. I'm currently watching Season 2 on DVD and I just frickin love this show so much. I can't see that having an updated version can be a bad thing. Best case...Battlestar Gallactica 2.0. Worst case? I ignore the fucker and keep watching my DVDs.

Posted by: jamiepants at July 8, 2009 11:45 AM

Optimus, I know I'm not much older than you, but right now I feel ages older. Ugh.

Mark Stern wants to know what the next great time travel show will be? Here's a thought - come up with a new idea yourself! Jeebus, is it completely unfathomable these days to think of new shows (or movies) rather than remakes/reboots??

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 8, 2009 11:51 AM

i call shotgun.

Quantum Leap got me through my first year of law school. i would watch it on SciFi between classes and it kept me from killing any of my fellow law students, so i guess it kept me out of jail too. i see no need to remake the show, but it doesn't surprise me that someone from SyFy--i seriously don't understand that name change--would think it's a good idea.

to be perfectly honest i felt the same way about the BsG remake and they pulled that off so i should try to reserve judgment. the main difference is that the original BsG was cheesetastic and QL was actually a good show. i will be watching the Alien Nation remake because i loved the cheesy goodness of that show too.

Posted by: pq at July 8, 2009 11:57 AM

They won't ever admit it, but the channel changed its name to the uber-idiotic "SyFy" because that combination of letters can be copyrighted. "SciFi" and its variations can't be copyrighted.

I have hated these waterheads ever since they cancelled Farscape and then let Stargate and its endless iterations run and run and run for seventy fucking years. It still makes me mad to think about that.

Posted by: Jerce at July 8, 2009 11:59 AM

I LOVED Quantum Leap something fierce and would be very sad to see it remade. Seriously, is it *that* hard to come up with an original premise? Aren't there thousands and thousands of writers in LA trying to shop scripts & ideas? Is it *that* hard to read some of them and come up with a show that isn't a reboot/re-imagining/regurgitating of something that was done well and doesn't need to be remade? OR if SyFy (which, stupid name, but I don't give a rat's ass what they call themselves) is hell-bent on going with a name brand, why not get Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles and continue it? Or Pushing Daisies, that's SyFyish, isn't it?

That picture makes me so happy...not just in my pants either; happy in my twisted, little heart!

Posted by: Lainey at July 8, 2009 12:00 PM

I can guaran-damn-tee you that the "next great time travel series" will not result from a network executive musing "I would love to find our time travel show".

Posted by: laredo at July 8, 2009 12:08 PM

Ha, MelBivDevoe - it looks like I just reimagined, rebooted and remade your comment! I promise I didn't. It just took me FOREVER to finish it and hit "post comment". I need more caffeine...

Posted by: Lainey at July 8, 2009 12:12 PM

Those unforgiveable bastards.

Posted by: Captain Steve at July 8, 2009 12:26 PM

was i smoking crack, or did I see Scott Bakula in the audience for SYTYCD last week? Is his kid dancing or something?

Posted by: Stella at July 8, 2009 12:33 PM

Great minds, Lainey.

Stella - he was definitely there. Maybe he always just wanted to *dance*? (jazz hands)

Posted by: MelBivDevoe at July 8, 2009 12:39 PM

pq, you are, of course, entitled to your opinion, but please understand that, for the most of us, comparing the original BSG to the original QL is like comparing a steaming pile of crap to a New York Strip Steak with a side of horseradish mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. The former was effectively recycled to produce something worthwhile; the latter is perfect just the way it is.

Posted by: Minty at July 8, 2009 12:59 PM

Did Seth turn into Dr Manhattan when he climbed onto the Murdertank? and is he...you know, as, um anatomically correct as Dr M?

Posted by: figgy at July 8, 2009 1:01 PM

Minty, i believe we are essentially in agreement--only i used cheese where you used a steaming pile of crap, and i hate steak, so i wouldn't use that comparison either. maybe the confusion stems from my made-up words. also, i freely admit that i am a huge fan of the cheesy entertainment, but i don't confuse cheesy goodness with quality entertainment.

Stella, i was SO excited when the camera flashed on Bakula during SYTYCD. i had to rewind to make sure that i wasn't seeing things.

Posted by: pq at July 8, 2009 1:31 PM

Worst case? I ignore the fucker and keep watching my DVDs.

If it was that simple, then nobody would complain about reboots/remakes anymore. Can't have that.

Did Seth turn into Dr Manhattan when he climbed onto the Murdertank? and is he...you know, as, um anatomically correct as Dr M?

No, that is the time machine. And technically yes.

Posted by: Vermillion at July 8, 2009 1:31 PM

Caught the first episode of Warehouse 13 last night and aside from the annoying "SyFy" logo at the bottom of the screen, it was pretty solid for a preliminary episode. By the end they'd even toned down the mega-bitchery of one of the main characters. Boo hoo, I get to work with priceless artifacts and unearth ancient evils. Go cry into your latte, you shitty Scully wannabe.

Posted by: Leigh at July 8, 2009 2:25 PM

SyFy? More like 'Sigh-Feh!'

As for 'great time travel shows', I will stick with Dr Who and let those assholes go duck themselves.

Posted by: Odnon at July 8, 2009 2:41 PM

Duck= Fuck
Stupid SyFy even got to that

Posted by: Odnon at July 8, 2009 2:45 PM

Seth, I had EXACTLY the same experience when I discovered Sports Night reruns on comedy central. I was absolutely fanatical about taping every episode in order. Still hang on to those tapes for nostalgia's sake. Aaron Sorkin taught me to love television.

Posted by: trippdup at July 8, 2009 7:38 PM

I find myself extremely turned on right now.

Posted by: Mimi at July 8, 2009 9:08 PM

Sigh... They changed it to 'SyFy' for marketing reasons. The network wants to come out with their own line of games and the like and their lawyers told them they'd catch flak for using the widely accepted short form of 'Science Fiction'. Doesn't anyone read?

As for Quantum Leap. I agree it was a diamond in NBC's rough. Lightning in a bottle and it should be left alone. Could be worse, though. They could try to reboot Seven Days.

Posted by: D.S. Ellis at July 9, 2009 3:46 PM

...would anyone have an issue if they took a similar basic concept as QL but changed details (characters' names, etc) and the title? Or even kept the title but had the same concept happening to another guy? It seems there's a compromise here...
