Superman's Mom Will Be Way Hotter Than Lois Lane: Diane Lane Cast As Martha Kent

I admit, 75% of my reason for posting this was to give me the opportunity to do an image search for Diane Lane, who, at 46, is roughly 376% hotter than most actresses 20 years her junior. Which is what makes this news kind of odd. It’s not odd that she’s been cast in Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man Of Steel — she’s a fantastic actress. It’s odd that she’s playing Superman’s mother.

Yes indeedy, Warner Brothers has announced that the lovely Ms. Lane has been cast as Martha Kent, making the Kent family pretty interesting. Kevin Costner is alleged to be playing Jonathan Kent (as of yet this isn’t officially confirmed, but it seems like it’s pretty much in the bag), which makes a hell of a combo when it comes to Clark’s parents.

Which leads me to ask: who the hell is going to play Lois Lane? They’re gonna need to find a pretty luminous young woman to stack up to Diane Lane. Should be interesting. What’s also curious is that the Kents apparently are going to be relatively young in Snyder’s picture, which leans more towards this being an early years picture. Which is not a particularly good thing. I won’t go on yet another rant about how I want to see Snyder advance the series a bit more, but for the love of god, please don’t make this a goddamn origin story. It’s Superman. Literally the entire world knows who he is and where he came from. No origin. No lame Lex Luthor as a villain. That’s what I’m asking for.

Oh, and Brainiac, if you’d be so kind (although if the Viggo Mortensen as Zod thing pans out, I could live with that).

But more importantly: Diane Lane.

(sigh)

Man, imagine if John Hamm had been cast as Superman and they were going into the story in media res... Diane Lane would be a perfect match as his Lois Lane.

They even have the same last name! Talk about missed synchronicity. Sting and the Police do not approve.

Justin Bieber has been cast as Captain America's dad.

I was attempting to type up a coherent comment about this but seriously, all I could is this: Mmm, Diane Lane.

I really liked the good old days, when superhero movies were about saving the world from some new villian, and not a FOOKIN ORIGINS STORY. Even STARS WARS got it right the first time by jumping into the middle of the action right a the beginning. When Lucas finally went back and did the origins story, it SUCKED FLAMING MONKEY BALLS.

It'll be good to see a bit of an Oedipal subtext to a superhero flick for once.

In all seriousness though, Willow Smith has been cast as Thor's long lost step-sister.

I don't get the age gap between Costner/Lane and Cavill. It may work if Costner and Lane play the Kents when they find baby Kal, but as grown? I'm not sure.

And, at this point, I think we are almost certain to see more origin story -- despite our demands against it.

I will watch Under the Tuscan Sun just to watch her tear off her blouse.

Wait it doesn't HAVE to be a Superboy story. Lane could of gotten married at 17, found superbaby at 18 and now Superman is 28! The perfect age for a hero.

I'll be in my Boudoir of Self Induced Shame.

"I will watch Under the Tuscan Sun just to watch her tear off her blouse."

And here I thought I was doing myself a favor by not watching that film. Clearly, I was wrong.

Just please don't have them wearing robes. Nothing pisses me off more than the trope that all aliens and all humans in the future wear robes. It's patently ridiculous. There's a reason we stopped wearing robes in the first place circa the Middle Ages.
Plus why hide Diane Lane under a robe?

MAJOR girl crush.

Exactly, PaddyDog. Everyone in the future is naked.

I have to bask in the Lane for a moment... okay...

Kevin Costner is alleged to be playing Jonathan Kent (as of yet this isn’t officially confirmed, but it seems like it’s pretty much in the bag)

If this comes through, there is roughly a 1 bajillion percent chance of having a scene in which Jonathan Kent tosses a baseball around with ol' Clark, and Clark then nearly taking dad's arm off with an inadvertent superfastball.

way, way, WAY hotter, and it makes absolutely no difference who plays lois.

Diane Lane looks like my sister-in-law. I find it slightly creepy.

@ Az, I'm glad I don't know anyone who looks like Diane Lane. It would make things awkward.
