Some Comics Can Be Done Live-Action

For everything else, there's DC Animated / Claude Weaver III

Trade News | June 29, 2009 | Comments (29)

Like a lot of folks, I thought the Batman/Superman billboard in I Am Legend was a neat little tease. And for a while, there was some promise of a teamup between the two DC titans (which of course got waylaid by the failure of Superman Returns). Well, leave it to the fine folks at Warner Premier (the folks behind the recent Wonder Woman animated movie ) to pick up the slack.

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies will be a direct-to-DVD full-length animated fature based on the comic book storyline of the same name. In it, a massive chunk of Kryptonite (said to be an actual piece of the planet Kryton) is heading towards Earth. President(!) Luthor uses this as an opportunity to rid himself of his greatest foe. Superman is then framed for a crime he didn’t commit, and Luthor turns the world against him by claiming the meteor is driving the Man of Steel crazy. When even his fellow heroes are forced to try and capture him, Superman has to turn to the only person he can trust: a certain Caped Crusader WHO’S used to being on the wrong end of the law.

If the thought of Superman and Batman on the run isn’t enough to entice you, the cast list might. On top of the return of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Tim Daly as Big Blue, Clancy Brown also returns to play the magnificent bastard Lex Luthor.

Check out an exclusive interview with the producers, original story writer Jeph Loeb, and the three stars.

Update: Found the teaser trailer. Hurry before it gets yanked.

Kevin Conroy's voice could melt my panties off.

With news like this, I'm like to start gibbering like a mad fool!

Every DC Animated movie they've put out has been pretty fucking stellar, so I am very, very excited for this one.

Posted by: Snath at June 29, 2009 10:52 AM

Fantastic. One of my most vivid memories involves me on my friend's couch at like age "young", eating lunchables pizza (I know, disgusting), and watching batman/superman animated awesomeness. I would absolutely watch this...

This news makes me happy. Which is quite a feat for a Monday morning.

...a certain Caped Crusader whose used to being on the wrong end of the law.

...WHO'S used to being on the wrong side of the law.

That being said, I do love Batman and Clancy Brown.

Can you give me titles of these? This stuff has flown completely under my radar.

Thanks!

Superman: Doomsday
Batman Gotham Knight (the Begins/TDK middle movie)
Justice League The New Frontier
Wonder Woman
Green Lantern First Flight (did we cover that one here?)

Not to mention some of the previous Batman films like Mask of the Phantasm or SubZero.

There was even a planned Teen Titans: The Judas Contract film, but it was put on hold.

"In it, a massive chunk of Kryptonite (said to be an . . ."

I read that as, "It's a massive chunk of Kryptonite (said to be a piece of shit)."

I guess I was expecting a scathing review.

Posted by: BWeaves at June 29, 2009 11:56 AM

Obviously you have been spoiled by Dustin and Prisco, Bweaves.

I am apparently incapable of scathing. Well, outside of commenting, anyway.

DC Animated has a solid track record for quality. I'll grab this flick, even if the original story was written by Jeph Loeb.

(You can't encourage Jeph Loeb...)

Posted by: David at June 29, 2009 12:33 PM

It was written by Jeph Loeb? Goddammit. There goes any hope I had for an interesting plot, continuity and structure that made sense, and lack of magic turtles.

Posted by: Snath at June 29, 2009 12:51 PM

Krypton, son. Krypton. With a "p".

*hangs head*

I was just talking about the Batman vs Superman thing on the post about The Avengers. This just makes me sad that I won't get to see Bale beat the shit out of some douchebag in tights....damn't.

The Google is never lonely. I used it for everything, but I wanted the Good People's opinions on these matters, not just general internet babble.

That teaser trailer is the best thing I've seen all day.

Also recommended:

Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (awesome)

The Batman/Superman Movie (basically a long episode of the TV series, but still really good)

Anyone watch Justice League: The New Frontier? I thought that was crap for the most part.

Posted by: Mick J at June 29, 2009 1:51 PM

The actual comic is balls-out Jeph Loeb retardation that was only justified by Ed McGuinness' gorgeous art and occasionally a sense of childlike awe. (SPOILER: the giant chunk of Kryptonite is destroyed by a giant half-Superman/half-Batman robot. And Jeph Loeb is fucking serious about his giant SuperBatman hybrid robots.) I can't see the cartoon version being as good as Ed McGuinness.

Ok. Fair enough.

Superman:Doomsday is the gayest thing ever. Seriously, when Lex Luthor is beating up his clone of Superman while shouting 'why did you leave me'. - gayer than 'Smallville' gay. Seriously Lex, have a good, long talk with yourself.

Posted by: twig at June 29, 2009 2:30 PM

I noticed that SuperBatmanBot in the trailer. Looks like they're keeping it close to the original.

Posted by: Snath at June 29, 2009 3:00 PM

Jeph Loeb. JEPH LOEB. Fuck Jeph Loeb. May his skin melt off and his eyes explode, the filthy, power-tripping, smegma-sucking dildo.

Posted by: Lucas at June 29, 2009 7:23 PM

Oh, of all the stories to adapt, why that one? It's Armageddon with superheroes, down to the punching over who makes the heroic sacrifice.

an actual piece of the planet Kryton

I know that's a typo, but Batman and Superman meeting the android from Red Dwarf would be completely awesome.

Posted by: Master Mahan at June 29, 2009 7:57 PM

What's the music in that trailer? I think it's the third time this week I've heard it (and yeah, I know, it's still Monday).

Is there a law or regulation that the same freakin' piece of music has to be used for all superhero/action movies?

Or does it just sound that way?

kevin conroy could read me the phone book.

and clancey brown could read me the bible. drawkcab.

Everybody needs to STOP being excited about something written by Jeph Loeb. Right now.

Posted by: Daniel Hall at June 29, 2009 11:33 PM

In watching the trailer, it appears that they're not only basing the movie on Jeph's story, but animated it in line with how artist Ed McGuiness rendered the characters in his style when he drew that storyline. Bravo!

i know i know, loeb is a schmuck but i really did love the long halloween and fallen son punched several holes in me (jesus, namor at the end KILLED me).

The Wonder Woman movie with Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion was fantastic, and I'll watch anything with Kevin Conroy as Batman.
