Some Old School Superman Invades "Chuck"

The guest casting of Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Kristen Kreuk (“Smallville”) on “Chuck” finally makes some sense now. It gives NBC a chance, with the return of the “Chuck” on Monday, to bring us this new promo, inspired by the old Superman openings.

It’s 47 different flavors of cool.

I’ve not been amazed with this season of “Chuck,” so far — the Chuck and Sarah love-interest plotline is starting to fizzle and feel a lot like Ross and Rachel, though the spy stories have been holding up well, despite the fact that “Chuck” isn’t really the bad-ass that pre-season promos suggested. It’s still a great show, though. The heart-tugging plotline just isn’t as strong.

But, you know: Anything to keep Adam Baldwin working (though, never follow his Twitter account — never, ever, ever follow his Twitter. Dude’s the wackjob crazy right-wing nutjob you’d expect his characters to be, and he has no problems sharing his politics, no matter how many fans he alienates).

Hmmm, haven't watched any Chuck. Should I bother at this point? Anyone?

I've really liked the show this season. And I like that the romance has ebbed a little; which is hilarious considering apparently there was a Shipper freak out over the fact that "ZOMG" they are not boning 24/7. Or something.

I also like that Chuck isn't suddenly Jason Bourne. Dude's still a dweeb at heart. A hot, sexy, charming dweeb, but the fact remains.

And pretty much just to piss you off, I started following Adam Baldwin on twitter. With the adorable twit pic Zac Levi posted of himself, Adam and Nathan Fillion (and I think, Yvonne, but can't recall), how could I not? Castle in Castle! So cute.

And as a side note, my mom and I watch this show together. She'd never admit it, but I think she has a crush on Casey (a.k.a. Adam Baldwin), which makes me laugh to no end. But maybe I could use that to get her to watch Firefly with me?

Watch from the beginning and enjoy. Not great TV but not bad; it has a decent ensemble cast, interesting story lines and some genuinely funny interactions between Baldwin and Zach Levi.

That promo's cute. I'm piling up Chuck episodes awaiting a free week or so - I haven't even watched season 1 yet. Avoiding spoilers has become impossible, I can only hope that I've drunk those memory cells into oblivion by the time I manage to watch the show!

You are so right about Baldwin and Twitter. I gave him a couple of days, then unfollowed him. Though I might have known, since he spent five minutes at a con selling a pal of mine on the 'Big Hollywood' site - a scary nest of right-wing nutjobs if I ever saw one. So, sorry Adam, love your work, but I can't be doing with your politics.
And there's more, sadly. Turns out that Zach Levi is a religious nut. Sigh.... actors. Why they have to be so crazeee?

Posted by: tarn at February 24, 2010 11:14 AM

Ah, Adam Baldwin. My mom taught him drama back when he was in high-school, and took him to his very first film audition -- for "The Bodyguard." So I feel a bit connected to him, even though I was just a baby at the time.

And yeah, I definitely don't see eye to eye with him on politics, but that's the case with the majority of my extended family too, so there you go.

And his stance it might be a bit of a reaction to the perception that all actors must be liberal -- have you noticed when actors go conservative, they go MEGA ULTRA conservative (i.e. Gary Sinese), almost to make up for how the rest of Hollywood is perceived?

Posted by: linny at February 24, 2010 11:22 AM

I don't follow "Twitter," so I can't speak for those, but I have read multiple blog posts from Adam Baldwin on sites like "Big Hollywood." His efforts on topics like public education are among the most cogent, well thought-out pieces I have ever read from a celebrity, from the left or right. Of course, they are not slavishly devoted to socialism and the religion of liberalism. So, I guess you have to dismiss them, rather than use any facts or rational arguments to demonstrate why they are "crazy." That's OK - you hold on to that liberal elitism like a blanket on a cold night. It's going to get colder...

Posted by: DScottGT at February 24, 2010 11:22 AM

Oh, and in the spirit of shameless name dropping, my dad totes knew Gary Sinese back when he was starting up Steppenwolf, because my dad was college buddies with John Malkovitch and they were all in the theater scene in Chicago during the 70s. Yeah, that's right, I'm SHAMELESS. Hahahaha.

Posted by: linny at February 24, 2010 11:27 AM

Big Hollywood is a fucking blight on the internet.

Proof.

@Tarn, I assume you are referring to all the nut jobs out there, like Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Janeane Garofalo and the rest. Not just the ones who happen to be conservative or religious.

Posted by: EricD at February 24, 2010 12:05 PM

I love Chuck. Love it. Perhaps it's because I see myself as Chuck (hopelessly nerdy but yet still charmingly handsome. And modest too) or perhaps because the show fulfills all my nerdy dreams (yes, one day I will be a government super spy and be surrounded by gorgeous women... just you wait).

Is it a perfect show? No. But I just cant stop watching it. Though, that might be Boobs McGee's fault.

Posted by: Lennon at February 24, 2010 12:14 PM

Jebus, TK. That's terrifying!

Posted by: admin at February 24, 2010 12:23 PM

Oh God.

Please, please, please let the Chuck post turn into a political/religious bloodbath. It'd be my two favorite things in one!

Also, tarn when did Zac Levi become a religious nut? I just thought that when people asked, "Are you Jewish?" and he said "No, I'm not..." I thought that was pretty much nut free. But who knows? Maybe his participation in the second Chipmunks movie was an act of Jihad? It'd make a whole hell of a lot more sense. Oh Zachary Levi, please stop taking terrible projects, I'll pay you all of my no monies to just hang out with me and play video games be adorable.

TK that was terrible, you should have put a NSFW on that link. Shame on you.

Posted by: Kayanne at February 24, 2010 12:24 PM

(puff).... see your breath yet?

I'm not supportive at all of Sarah Palin as a Presidential candidate. The last thing we need is an inexperienced commander-in-chief who leads by expounding feel-good generalizations, recycles ideas that have been around for generations, and is the product of a corrupt state political system.

Yeah, that would be terrible for the country.....

Riiiight... because nothing Hollywood does could be construed as crazy when it comes to religion or politics. We all know Scientology is real. The only thing that could make that shit crazier is if Nick Nolte and Mickey Rourke were running it.

Posted by: Xtreme at February 24, 2010 1:14 PM

Noooo! Adam Baldwin is a sweet, puppy-loving (not in the gross way), liberal hippie playing ironic parts! I know he is because otherwise our pretend marriage will never work out! He's just being really really sarcastic.

Posted by: esme at February 24, 2010 1:16 PM

Oh dear. I come in here to look at awesome promos of Chuck, the next thing I'm getting political and religious pre-spooge dribbling down my monitor.

Yeah, that's kind of how it happens around here. Wait for it, someone will show up with a dick/titty joke, it's only a matter of time.

Posted by: Xtreme at February 24, 2010 2:31 PM

EricD,

I have nothing against reasonable people of any political or religious stripe. But for Baldwin, I think 'Conservative' is too mild a word.
Anyhow... I meant all flavours of crazy. Extreme behaviour or attitudes. Scientology, sex addiction, drug use a la Lohan, tediously long left-wing speeches at award shows, diva-from-hell behaviour, all of it. Actor crazeeeeness.

Kayanne,
Chipmunk jihad? Hee!
I've never heard him say anything about religion, except that he's not Jewish.
But according to a friend of mine who spent some time talking with him in a bar, he is heavily into, and involved with, his religion. Sure, so are plenty of people, and each to his own, I guess. But the beliefs he espoused were extreme enough to make my pal very uncomfortable. I was disappointed to hear it, as he does seem nice and dorky and all-round cute otherwise.

I like how DScottGT is single-handedly trying to carry on this political discussion, while the rest of the comments swirl obliviously around him. Well, not anymore. I shall force you to recognize his political hyperbole and ridiculous metaphors! Y'all better recognize!

Posted by: the_wakeful at February 24, 2010 2:56 PM

tarn and now I'm conflicted. He was either crazy or passionate, one would make me weirded out and the other would get me hot. I know, I know, it's ridiculous, but guys with a passion for their beliefs get me all fired up. Le sigh. Which is completely contradictory to my pseudo-Southern Baptist roots, wherein one's passion for a casserole dinner was supposed to be the epitome of sex-appeal.

Anyway, I want a riot!

Adam Baldwin is a Fascist! Nathan Fillion is a Commie! Hollywood is desecrated by right-winged, nut job, outliers! Show business is run by snobbish, hippie-loving, liberals! Your mom!

There. Anyone offended?

No?

Dammit. I'm declaring a Chipmunk Jihad on all of y'all.

Posted by: Kayanne at February 24, 2010 3:05 PM

Thank you, "the_wakeful," for your shout-out. I greatly appreciate your deference to my remarks. It is really good to know I am reaching people.....

Posted by: DScottGT at February 24, 2010 3:11 PM

the_wakeful,
oh, I recognized. But I just could not be arsed... ;-)

Kayanne,
I think my friend would say he was 'crazy', with a side of 'wtf?'! As you say, le sigh... But she didn't get his opinion on casserole dinners, so perhaps all is not lost.

We need a Chipmunk Jihad t-shirt!

Posted by: tarn at February 24, 2010 3:17 PM

tarn and now I'm uber-curious. And my curiosity shall not be satiated until I've dissected him! Or something way less serial killery.

And DScottGT & the_wakeful where's my attention! I'm an obnoxious moderate with socially liberal leanings and fiscally conservative foundations. Somebody pick on me!

Ugh, I should start going to the Dive behind the Jiffy Lube to pick my fights.

Man, I really thought that sentence was gonna end differently. Kinda relieved, kinda disappointed.

Please tell me that shot of Lester on the counter portends a Jeffster performance.

I would totally go to a Robin Sparkles/Jeffster Concert!

Posted by: Jennifer at February 24, 2010 3:43 PM

Holy shit my beloved Jayne is a nutjob. I really had no idea. I feel so robbed. I wanted to read these “cogent, well thought-out pieces” regarding public education and the first thing I see is Adam’s quote “Public school children are innocent victims of a radical “guerrilla warfare” being waged by the late professor Howard Zinn…”

Howard Zinn should be considered a national treasure. And it’s a fucking shame that students aren’t required to read his A People's History of the United States book.

For shame Adam. For fucking shame!

Posted by: Scully at February 24, 2010 4:05 PM

Don't thank me, DScottGT, that wasn't a compliment.

I'm sorry, Kayanne, but I can only subtly insult one crazy person at a time. Although, I didn't really think it was that subtle. Some things are just hard to get across through text. THATSWHATSHESAID! AMIRIGHT?

Posted by: the_wakeful at February 24, 2010 4:19 PM

@tarn, in that case dude I am with you 100%. Although you can definately label me conservative, I hate smug fucks like Glenn Beck and Bill o'Reilly as much as I do the hollywood left leaning wackos like Janeane Garofalo.

Posted by: EricD at February 24, 2010 4:37 PM

And to everyone who wants to carry on the political flame war, check out the Matt Damon as RFK thread. I threw what I thought was a great zinnger at The Teddy Kennedy and got nothing. /cry

Posted by: EricD at February 24, 2010 4:41 PM

THAT'S Brandon Routh? Hot damn. I never gave him a second glance when he was Supes, but on Chuck? Hottie.

Posted by: SaBrina at February 24, 2010 9:27 PM

I've been just slightly disappointed in Chuck this season. Still a very good show, but since he has gotten the Intersect 2.0 it seems like they rely too much on a "flash" to fix everything. Used to be his geek knowledge or common sense or charm would save the day.

I just wanna share my experience here. I found my boyfriend several months ago, who is 10 years older than me, at http://EUAgeless.com/, a free place for age-gap relationship. It's fabulous! Maybe you wanna check it!
