Start Your Twirling, Damon Wayans Jr. Is Staying On 'New Girl' Indefinitely

By Joanna Robinson | Trade News | November 6, 2013 | Comments ()

Great news for all you Damon Wayans Jr. fans who were worried that Coach’s return on New Girl last night was overshadowed by Taye Diggs’ thigh. (And it was. Oh it was.)

But yes, where was I? Oh yes, good news, Coach is staying around indefinitely. Not sure whether or not he’ll be moving into Schmidt’s empty room, but the official word is that Damon Wayans Jr. will be in every episode until the end of the season. They’re keeping Wayans as a guest star instead of promoting him to series regular because he has a pilot of his own in development at FOX. Man, between Wayans and Pally that network is doing right buy the homeless Happy Endings cast. I believe now is the appropriate time for a brother to commence his twirling.

By the way, New Girl had a huge spike in ratings last night. I would love love love to attribute that to Damon Wayans Jr. but, ah, well…

Comments Are Welcome, Bigots and Trolls Are Not

  • Can we please get a better name to call him other than "COACH?" It's like nails on a chalk board.

  • Kate

I loved Damon Wayans Jr. in Happy Endings (well most of it anyway, everyone got pretty annoying around the end sadly), but I don't think he really fits in on New Girl. His character really reminds me of the sort of OTT stuff his dad used to do, and I don't know, it just feels dated compared to what everyone else is doing on New Girl.

  • kirbyjay

DWJ and EC ruined themselves for any other sitcom anywhere in the universe. I would have gladly signed a billion year contract to watch Happy Endings til the end of time ( hence the billion year contract) had it been the Brad and Jane show, now Coach just seems so ....untwirly.
Though the Coupster has managed to bring two totally different but great characters to life, ( Scrubs, if you're not paying attention) and I have faith that she will score a hat trick.
and I would watch "Winston and Ferguson" forever, as well. I've never seen a cat with such nuance and intrigue, and Fergs was pretty good too.

  • Ben

I was happy when Nick suckerpunched that smooth talking successful man. Us pudgy, underachievers have to stick together.

  • Patrick Garcia

Right?? And where are all the animated gifs of DWJ's highlights? It's like my Christmas was ruined by shiny muscular body parts :o(

  • Jifaner

I laughed so, so hard at the 4 guys' scenes together post strip club. If they can keep that magic going it will be great.

  • $6950553

Meh. I find his character annoying.

  • Guest

W.T.F. does this mean for Winston? He is already the 5th (and often forgotten) man behind Jess, Nick, Schimdt and Cece. Now Wayans?

  • emmalita

Winston deserves so much better. And where was Ferguson?

  • grr arrgh

I feel so bad that I'm content with them giving Winston weird quirks like his love of puzzlin' and cat stealing instead of actual story lines but it's just so damn funny.

  • Guest

I'd prefer actual story lines. If I wanted underdeveloped minority secondary characters played by great actors I'd watch the T.W.D.

  • grr arrgh

Valid point. I hadn't thought of it that way. I guess what I mean is that Winston is so consistently funny that I'm afraid they'll give him a really dumb plot instead of genius side stuff.

  • Guest

Most of what he has been given has been of the really dumb variety yet he is still manages to make it exceptional.

  • grr arrgh

I wouldn't quite go as far to say it was flat out dumb. Schmidt's whole cheating storyline was dumb and unnecessary, though I'm glad they didn't drag it out for half a season. Morris does manage to work magic with the little plot nuggets he's given but I feel that they're sort of the right type of weird/out there to be funny. Anyone else think they should downgrade Schmidt for a while and upgrade Winston?

  • Guest

There's dumb like stealing and then planning to murder your exes cat or running a cat brothel. And then just poorly written or forced storylines like Schimdt's love triangle or his trying to break up Jess and Nick.

  • grr arrgh

Agree to disagree? Again, because those story lines were funny (at least to me. Comedy is subjective so I'm not going to tell you what's funny and what's not) I consider them just weird enough and played excellently by Morris to escape the "dumb" label. I agree with your point about underdeveloped minority characters so I do feel that they should develop Winston, especially since he's the only character on the show they've yet to develop.

  • Guest

Agreed to disagree. I just want more Winston.

  • grr arrgh

And so do I, which is why I'll accept more in the form of cat brothels. I'm sorry, but that shit was just so weird it was hilarious. A real plot line would be great and hopefully in the pipeline.

  • emmalita

Lamorne Morris works with whatever crazy stuff he's given. It makes me want to see him with material worthy of his talent.

  • Guest

+1000, but I can only up vote you once. Dumb Disqus.

  • CLFilm

Yeah, I remembered Coach much more fondly than what played out on screen last night. Hope they figure out how to use him and move further away from the typical sitcom tropes. Taye Diggs, on the other hand? Perfection. Loved seeing him do some comedy. Loved seeing him in a sheet. Good times.

  • emmalita

    A) Jess was crazy for passing that up,
    B) Cece was crazy for not making her own time with Taye Diggs.

  • Sassy Pikachu

I think the only solution is to pass him to me.

(I don't know how to make the .gif work T_T)

  • Guest

I think the only way to fix this situation is to pass him to me.

  • emmalita

His wife might have something to say about it, but you have my blessing.

  • Sassy Pikachu

His wife is kind of my idol so... I wouldn't pass her up either, even though I am straight.

  • crackblind

One word for you then: Mah-gaa-leesh!

  • emmalita

I feel that way about Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally.

  • apsutter

    Ditto to both of you

  • Guest

I think the only way to fix that is to pass him to me.

  • Leland Eidson

It's been a while since I'd seen Taye Diggs in anything, so I'd forgotten how ridiculously handsome he is. As a straight man I can say with some confidence, I'd hit it.

  • LaineyBobainey

    My heart, it also twirls!

  • emmalita

He and Eliza Coupe were my favorite married couple on tv. I'm happy to have him on New Girl. But whenever he's off camera, this is what I'm imagining

  • Tinkerville

This makes me sad because A) it means we have a nigh impossible chance of Winston ever getting a decent storyline and B) I don't actually like his character on the show that much.

  • competitivenonfiction

I kind of thought that him and Coach playing off of each other was his first good storyline in awhile. This can only mean good things for our beloved Winston.

  • What happens if Coach and Winston team up? Imagine them running opposite to Nick and Schmidt.

    Just saying...

  • JoannaRobinson

I share some of those thoughts but I think they just haven't figured him out yet. Coach has had, what, two episodes? The other main characters took MUCH longer than that to settle in.

  • Tinkerville

Good point. I guess I still just get very frustrated over the fact that it's been over two seasons and they still haven't figured out what to do with the brilliant Lamorne Morris.

  • kilmo

While I loved Wayans Jr. on Happy Endings (RIP) "Shups for life!" Not sure what they're gonna do with his character. If it's gonna be a repeat of the guys not trying to repeat old patterns, that's kinda boring.

Also, I think my computer broke over the amount of black men on New Girl. 3 and 2 in the same scene!

  • Miss Laaw-yuhr

This actually raises a question for me - is there a sort of Bechdel test for black characters? Having Wayans, Morris, and His Hotness Diggs in the same episode of a network comedy seemed perfectly natural while viewing, yet in retrospect is totally remarkable because it is so rare (storyline crappiness aside). Someone smarter than me should analyze this.

  • apsutter

Funny you should mention it because I know someone who was talking about using the Bechdel test for nonwhite characters in The Walking Dead.

  • ray

    There is a test
    Is the lead character black
Does the movie or show deal with something
    other than racism
