Spike Jonze's Her Trailer: What If HAL 9000 Was Played by Scarlett Johansson and Enjoyed Phone Sex?

Spize Jonze’s (Where the Wild Things Are, Being John Malkovich, Adaptation) latest, Her, seems a lot like one of his Charlie Kaufman movies, but Spike Jonze himself wrote, as well as directed the film. It’s about a lonely writer who develops an unlikely relationship with his computer operating system, which is voiced by Scarlett Johansson, enjoys knock-knock jokes, long walks through fiber optic cables, and playful phone sex.

Arcade Fire scores the film, which also stars Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams, and Rooney Mara, none of whom would actually date Joaquin Phoenix with that moustache. I mean, COME. ON.

    Swing away Merrill.

There was an old twilight zone about this once, only the lonely guy was lonely because he was an astronaut on a distant planet, so they sent him a robot wife. It's interesting that 50 years later, that story can approach the same level of loneliness inside New York City.

  • Ironicloakandagger

My thoughts exactly! Kinda like the Real Steel movie and Steel episode. (Although I haven't got up to that episode yet)

  • gforcetwo

Thank you. I will go see this so hard!

  • crispin

The better question is: What If Spike Jones REALLY liked The Twilight Zone episode: "From Agnes-- With Love"?

  • So, Spike Jonze succeeded in getting Joaquin Phoenix to smile more for that 2-1/2 minute preview than he probably had in his adult life up till now. There must be an MTV Movie Award category for that.

  • I... I may have teared up a little. This movie looks like it'll be about profound loneliness and the things people will do to end that loneliness. Just in that trailer, Phoenix seems achingly vulnerable.

  • sanity fair

Thank you! I think THIS may be why I was sooo bothered by it. I'm achingly vulnerable enough on my own. I don't think I can handle watching 2 hours or so of complete, aching vulnerability on screen.

I couldn't figure out why I was so creeped out by the trailer, but sometimes we're creeped out by our reflections when we aren't prepared for them, aren't we? Or is that just me, too? :)

  • Mel C.

He does achingly vulnerable so well.

  • Patty O'Green

Have any of y'all seen Black Mirror? It is a British mini-series; take the Twilight Zone and apply it to a future (or alternate present) where technology is even more absurdly advanced.

This trailer (and the possible implications of the story) made me think of an episode called "Be Right Back". I highly recommend it.

  • sanity fair

Love this cast, love the director, but...am I the only one who thought this looked CREEPY AS FUCK? And not in a good way. In a "oh-my-fucking-god-I-can't-believe-I'm-watching-this-it-will-give-me-nightmares-and-I-don't-know-why-but-please-don't-make-me-watch-this-movie-EVER!" kind of way.

Please, please, please tell me someone else thought that too...

    Just me? Well, OK then.

  • emmalita

Not just you. Not at all.

  • sanity fair

Thank you. That makes me feel better. :)

  • emmalita

    I live to serve.

  • Joaquin Phoenix guarantees some degree of creepiness, even when he's not trying.

  • sanity fair

Agreed. Part of it is him with the bad 'stache, I'm sure, but there is something more about this that I just can't put my finger on.

Robot and Frank meets Lars and the New Girl?

  • six6sixwitch

All the things I hate! 70's mustaches, Arcade Fire, fake sincerity

  • E Robb

Me and you would not get along.

  • Eve

I'd date Joaquin Phoenix with the "I'm Still Here" look so...that moustache is nothing.

  • Oh, I like this a great deal.

At first, the trailer made it look like the technology might allow Phoenix's character to reconnect with humanity. Then it maybe looks like it will further isolate him from it.

    Looks excellent.

  • Arran

Spike remade Electric Dreams? This I gotta see!
