We announced yesterday that Marc Webb had found his villain, casting Welsh actor Rhys Ifans as the unnamed villain in his Spider-Man reboot. Not surprisingly, who that villain would be didn’t take long to be announced. The Wrap’s Deal Central is announcing that Ifans will play Curt Connors, otherwise known in the Marvel universe as The Lizard.

It’s a sensible choice for Webb — Connors is a research scientist who loses his arm, and researches reptilian DNA in an effort to find a way to regenerate his lost limb. Of course, as with most Spider-Man villains, science goes awry and human-hating Lizard is born. In Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2, the character of Connors was portrayed by Dylan Baker as one of Peter Parker’s college professors, although Raimi never had the character actually become the reptilian bad guy. It’s an effects-heavy villain, but also one that’s new to viewers, thus eliminating the need to retread characters like Dr. Octopus and The Green Goblin. A lot of other Spider-Man villains, like Rhino and Scorpion, are little more than brutes, while ones like Vulture likely wouldn’t be particularly engaging to viewers. Using Connors allows for a villain with some depth to him. Personally, I’d be interested in a Kraven the Hunter appearance, but who the hell ever listens to me.

Anyway, get ready to see this:

"You can't talk tough, Nicky. Even the voice inside your head has a speech impediment."

I, for one, am stoked.

Yeah, I'm just gonna stay over on the Batman thread.

You're old news, Peter Parker. Old news.

I'm sorry, but Rhys Ifans will always be Spike to me.

I'm going to tell you a story that will make your balls shrink to the size of raisins.

Well, of course he is. Sure, the Lizard is probably the best choice of the remaining options, story-wise, but he's the worst possible choice of anything that was mentioned the other day when the casting news was announced. They will screw this up by relying too heavily on CGI lizard, far too little on Curt Connors (you can't have both, like you did with Dafoe when he could just lift up the Goblin mask) thus pushing away any possible adult audience and slumping back towards pg-13 scares for the kiddies (in 3-D of course. MMMM...Lizard saliva flying right at me! Delicious!)

Well, at least it's not another "gritty reboot"...right?

Funny you mention Kraven the Hunter, TK. I thought about that the other day too, but then I thought casting the dude from Notting Hill as a psychotic Russian with a death wish might be a bit of a stretch, even in today's ridiculous comic book move climate. OK, enough geeking out for the day. Back to work.

Soooo, Batman fights a human/croc and Spiderman fights a human/lizard. Too much the same. Oh look, it's wearing pants, too!

The Lizard was my favorite villain back in the olden days.
Which, of course, means that they're gonna fuck it up sideways, eleventy ways from Sunday.

The Michael Morbius story-line would be my next fav, and if they don't manage to kill the franchise with another craptastic attempt to filmatate the comic, I imagine they might give Morbius a go... and fuck that one in the ear, too.

Faith is for fools.

"Filmatate" will, for today at least, replace my previously preferred "Enfilmanate".

Thanks Rykker.

I'm hoping for the best, but expecting the worst. I'm not sure if Webb and company can can wash the stain of Emo-Spidey and super villain stew from my brain.

Unless they do the Kraven, Vermin mini-series comic thingamafuck from back
in the eighties, I don't give a shitterypoop about Spiderman none no more.

Word.

Carpet Cleaning & Regrouting

since when does licking a carpet qualify as cleaning it?

the picture of the lizard looks like the hulk and a dinosaur had a baby. that's kind of awesome.

There's totally, like, enzymes and stuff in saliva.
And if you wash your mouth out with soap before hand, that would add, like, sodium lauryl sulfate to the mix.
Those fibers be gettin' cleaned, yo.

I don't trust lizards.

And neither should you.

Posted by: DarthCorleone at October 14, 2010 2:05 PM

Damn, I first read that he's a 'human-eating' lizard, and I thought "woo! I'm gonna have to watch this!" but then...then I was just sad.
