Filling Your Annual Barbie Quota
Quick, when I say “Barbie”, who comes to mind?
What if I were to tell you that you’re somewhat close. Kind of. You might want to start associating this familiar face with Barbie:
In a surprise lateral move, Schumer is slated to move from one plastic environment to another. Coming in the summer of 2018, she’ll play a character in a live-action Barbie film. According to Deadline, Schumer will play a character struggling to find her place in a presumably utopian Barbieland. The movie will approach such subjects as body positivity, conformity, and self-love for a PG audience. Additionally, the production is to be helmed by a female director and so far, one name has been tossed around: Thea Sharrock (Me Before You.) With taking such a recognizable icon like the Barbie, I’m sincerely hoping that this will keep Mattel’s forward momentum going with providing all children with role models that are vastly different than the ones many of us had growing up. Maybe they’ll give GI Joe’s realistic body images, but I won’t hold my breath.
Speaking of Barbie, Ken has abs. Like, Mariah Carey-sprayed-on-abs
Moschino’s Creative Director Jeremy Scott has teamed up with Mattel to offer a limited edition set of the designer himself and Stella Maxwell, a Victoria’s Secret Angel. With a price tag of $200, the duo will be the most expensive set to date. Words escape me here, folks. This….this just flummoxes me.
Lastly, we take a right turn into Uncanny Valley. After being shamed for breastfeeding in public, custom dollmaker Betty Strachan created a breastfeeding Barbie doll to illustrate, and hopefully normalize, this for a bunch of pearl clutchers who can’t handle a baby’s meal and who have probably never seen a wildlife documentary. Now, I’m not a mother nor am I maternal in any sort of a way, but the only thing I find offensive about these dolls are the teeth on the moms. I think the bags under the eyes or dark circles are incredibly accurate though, no?
Should you feel so inclined to support Strachan’s efforts, the Breastfeeding Barbies can be purchased here on Etsy naturally.
