In What Kind of F**ked Up World Does This Pass as Entertainment?

Only on MTV / Dustin Rowles

MTV has a new show out, called “Silent Library,” which is part of their new “Balls Out” comedy block, which I was alerted to by a PR flack. I normally pass on these emails, but I admit they hooked me with this line: Check out the”hilarious clips below that feature contestants performing tasks that include a ‘toothless old man’.”

The fuck?

Apparently, this “game show” consists entirely of someone sitting in a library, performing a demeaning or disgusting task, and having to remain completely silent throughout. This is supposed to be a form of entertainment. I really wish I hadn’t watched the clip, but because I unwittingly subjected myself to it, I’m passing along that pain to you, our readers. Because I’m an unrelenting asshole.

Don’t watch it. Seriously. Do not watch it. But if you do, you’ll completely understand that our culture is heading straight into a cesspool of depraved banality. Jesus Christ, MTV. This is what passes for “balls out”? Just bring back “Remote Control” and “Singled Out” and shut the fuck up already.

Why don't they just sit in a library with their balls out?

Well, you can blame Japan this time. This is one of their gameshows, apparently imported and remade for the US. Although I guess the blame could still be settled on MTV since they're the ones who saw the same Youtube clips I did when I was a Japan major, and instead of thinking "Oh Japan, you're so weird." they thought "BRILLIANT! MUST HAVE AT ONCE!"

Hey was that Katy Perry singing the coton song?

And this show is a ripoff. I KNOW i saw this as a show from Japan or something. And why wouldn't they rip it off? you heard those guys laugh. Cheesecake is hillllllaaarrrrious!!!

Posted by: PissBoy at June 22, 2009 11:39 AM

I'm not watching it. You can't make me.

Posted by: Anna von Beaverplatz at June 22, 2009 11:50 AM

Heading? You mean we're not already there?

Posted by: Tracer Bullet at June 22, 2009 11:55 AM

Oh my god. Are... are they gonna tea bag that old man? Is that what they really mean by "balls out"?

Posted by: jM at June 22, 2009 11:56 AM

If we bring back Singled Out, in fifteen years we'll have another aging whore on our hands who will go on Oprah and insist that we're killing our children with sunblock or something equally rediculous and ill-thought out.

Some more shit like Daria, though? I wouldn't mind that at all.

For some reason that header picture didn't look real to me. I was kinda like "whoa, what the hell is Pixar up to now?" until I clicked on the article and read the not nearly as amusing or intriguing truth.

And I'm not gonna watch that video. No particular reason why, just not gonna do it.

This is a rip off of a Japanese show. I've only seen it once but it was the exact same thing except it was Japanese comedians doing it. I didn't find it interesting over there...and now I know it wasn't cause of a langage barrier.

Marra's dead on about bringing back Singled Out. You have to think about the ramifications of such things! Won't SOMEBODY think of the children??

Posted by: Melissa at June 22, 2009 12:15 PM

Calling Jenny a whore is a bit much, Marra. Nor does she say it's killing children. To me, the autism-vaccination debate needs more study. It is not that ridiculous or far-fetched, if one really looks into the studies, all two of them that have been done. No I do not have kids or her books, nor am I a fan. There is a lot of information kept from us though. I just thought that was a cheap shot, I guess.

LALALALALA. Not listening! LALALALALA.

Racahel, my biggest problem with Jenny McCarthy is that she's putting other children in danger with her crusade. Not vaccinating your children exposes them to incredibly deadly or debilitating diseases, and since most everyone who is of age to have children now grew up after wide spread vaccines I think many Americans forget how bad those diseases can be. I nearly died from chicken pox, and I hear people ridicule the chicken pox vaccine all the time.

Also, there's so many chemicals or factors that could lead to autism that have never been investigated. Aspartame, the artificial sweetner, was introduced in 1974. The autism rates started going up a year later and increased drastically when the population that would have been children in 1974 reached child bearing age (early 90's). Do I think aspartame causes autism? Not really, but I think there's a lot more investigation of multiple factors that needs to happen. It could just be that there's a kind of perfect storm involving genetic tendency and environmental factors.

Aside from that it seems like Ms.McCarthy's son has celiacs disease, given that a gluten free diet "cured" his autism and many of his symptoms sound similar to other undiagnosed celiac children that I've heard of. But I'm not a doctor, so take that as you will.

OK, R2D1, so I didn't watch. Next.

The Japanese version was funnier.

I agree with you Genny. People should not stop vaccinating. It is part of the culture of fear we seem to revel in. She and others have fostered a hysteria, though if you actually hear her she doesn't seem crazy and isn't calling for kids not to be vaccinated but for more study and transparency. Part of the problem being that most people don't even look into the information for themselves, they just follow the talking head on the TV.
I was more annoyed by the personal attack, I prefer valid reasoned attacks. That's why I love this site so much, of course.

My country prevents me from watching your dumb video.

Posted by: Orser at June 22, 2009 3:00 PM

Marra and Genny, the vaccination issue is more than a punchline. The U.S. government currently requires/recommends that we vaccinate kids for 3X as many illnesses as we were vaccinated against as kids. Most of the vaccinations occur before the child is 2 years old. Modern medicine is great--but we can't blindly submit to what we're told is best for us--particularly when there are alarming trends of autism, increased allergies and asthma--all of which concern the immune system which some argue is compromised by over vaccination. I don't know that vaccinations cause those issues. It scares me to death though. I chose to follow a longer vaccination schedule. My kids will have all their vaccinations but not 6 or 8 vaccinations per visit (each shot has 1 to 3 vaccinations). My point is really only that it's not a stupid concern that should be mocked. Of course, if your point was that we shouldn't blindly follow Jenny McCarthy, point taken.

Somehow remaking the Japanese game show loses a lot - just overdub it with a coupla wiseass hosts and roll the original footage already!

If you think our culture is going down the toilet, you can blame the cultures we steal our tv ideas from. Big Brother, Iron Chef and many other oddball shows originated elsewhere. We've been borrowing comedies from overseas for decades ("All in the Family," anyone?). Remember, though, that other countries are borrowing our shows as well. Our culture isn't sinking any more quickly than anyone else's.

I miss Daria. And Aeon Flux. And this is what you have to offer me? Fuck you, MTV.

Posted by: greer at June 22, 2009 7:14 PM

This show has been on in England for a couple of years, but it's named 'Fist of Zen'! They film it in libraries and old people's homes...

Posted by: Yaz at June 22, 2009 8:38 PM

I'm always confused about the whole 'shouldn't expose our children to too many vaccinations' thing. Because one thing that is about a hundred times stronger in a child than an adult is the amount of immature T-cells they have available to them.
I intend to vaccinate the holy heck out of my crotch-fruit before they hit puberty, when the massive increase in sex hormones cause the thymus to shrivel up. That tsunami of t-cells eager to be converted into antibody-producing machines becomes a trickle, and all that's left are the cells that have already been converted. So my kid's getting the ultimate lymphocyte artillery before that happens.

There's a big difference between causation and correlation. This supposed link between autism and vaccination could be no more than a coincidence - we vaccinate our children around the same time that the symptoms of autism become apparent. And frankly, you'd be hard pressed to find ANYTHING that hasn't been linked to the increase in allergies and asthma (and if not those, cancer). I recently read an interesting article that showed how soap could be partly to blame.

I never found the eating parts of Survivor or Fear Factor entertaining in the least but for some reason I couldn't stop laughing. It's like watching those idiots light themselves on fire. I can't stop laughing at the assholes.
