Sex and Zen 3D Coming to America

Quick, what 3D film holds the opening day record in Hong Kong? I’ll give you a hint. It’s not Avatar, and it’s in the headline. There’s a common belief in technology that new consumer technologies only become successful when they find an application in sex. The Internet? Porn. VHS beat the superior Beta format because Sony wouldn’t give licenses for pornography to be produced on the Beta. The printing press? Monk slash fiction. Well now we can add 3D to that list, because the first successful adult film in 3D is coming to America.

Sex and Zen 3D is an erotic costume drama set in the historical Ming Dynasty and was adapted from the novel The Carnal Prayer Mat, which I think is a far superior title. Its Chinese distributor reached a deal at Cannes with China Lion, an America distributor of Asian films, to bring the film to American theaters. The film has already hit New Zealand and Australia, presumably right in the eye.

Producer of the film, Stephen Shiu Yeuk-Yuen declared that “it is just like being a voyeur near someone’s bed,” thus proving that one person’s compliment can be another person’s federal crime. Sources could not confirm that Stephen actually had first hand knowledge that the film was exactly like that.

Sorry about that header image, but you try searching for “Sex and Zen” and you’ll see how difficult it is to find a front page appropriate picture. So I thought to myself, self, what else is scary and comes from Asia? Tetetetetetet.

Porn in 3D (especially on the big screen) is a horrible idea. 3D is already proven to put unnecessary strain on the eyes. Combine that with masturbation and you've got a blindness epidemic that hasn't been seen...excuse me, witnessed, since the great eye-gouging of '38.

So who's reviewing this movie?

Posted by: logan at May 26, 2011 11:17 AM

Well done, TK. I saw that picture and broke out in a cold sweat. Then I read the item, and... well, apropos.

No this is Steven Lloyd Wilson, Anna. Have the courtesy to at least get their names right. It's not like Rowles pays these people.

All right, logan, it was all worth it just for that line. But best to go out like Seinfeld and not linger like The Simpsons.

That header pic is from The Audition, right? That's why I was scared to click on the link? Yeah? It's a good thing it's called Sex and Zen 3D, because two of those things will always get my motor running, enough to drive past any initial, conditioned trepidation.

Paultera, my Grandfather has oft regailed us with stories from those terribly years. "The Great Eye-Gouging," he'd say, obscured through a cloud of tobacco smoke, "was the most terrible tragedy t'ever befall this great nation." And we'd be like, "But Pappy, you always said it was giving broads the vote!" and then he'd beat us and lock us in the basement until we "cleaned" it of the pests. And then no dinner. Because duh, like we hadn't already had enough to eat.

Ah, sweet memories of childhood.

It said TK when I posted it! Unlike MOST people on this site, I actually know how to read a byline*.

*Except when I'm drunk. Which may or may not be most of the time. Including, evidently, at work at 11:30 a.m.

Obviously it's a vast right wing conspiracy. Or the liberal media. I'm never quite sure.

Wow! I have a copy (in English) of The Carnal Prayer Mat, and I'm pleased to see that this is based on that book.

For me, the funniest part of the book was its depiction of penile enlargement surgery - in the 14th Century.

Yeah this did pretty damn good business out here in NZ. Then again my cinema is in a fairly asian-ified part of Auckland, so that probably helped.

Unfortunately it tends to distract the staff.. All I want is someone to make me a coffee during the mid afternoon shift slump, and they're all off doing "screen checks". Grubby plonkers.

It's already hit New Zealand?! I'm going to scan the movie listings right now.

The original Sex and Zen is one of the most intentionally funny movies I've ever seen. I would however love to see Amy Yip in 3D...
