Hooray! Good news for those of you who suffer from PTvSD (Post Television Stress Syndrome): Word out of the HBO offices (specifically, programming director Michael Lombardo) is that the next season of True Detective has been upgraded from ‘existential despair’ to ‘melancholy anguish’ on the Misery Porn scale. That means, we’ll all need to adjust our True Detective beverage accordingly from whiskey to scotch!

It’s still dark,” Lombardo said at the Guardian International Television Festival. “Nic [Pizzolatto] explores the darkness in people’s souls. … It’s not as dark, but it’s not a light ride. Nic likes looking into the crevices of the soul.”

Oh good! I do like a good soul-crevice gander! I wonder where Nic Pizzolatto will appropriate his material from this year! Angela von der Lippe?

Lombardo also confirmed a few details we already know, though he remains mum on casting.

“We’re going to start shooting in September for it to air next summer,” he said. “[It has] different characters, a different setting. It’s set in California, all of California. There are three cops. One of the characters is female. I think that’s probably all I’m allowed to say. We’ll probably be announcing casting soon.”

The latest rumors suggest Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Elisabeth Moss, and Vince Vaughn are up for roles in the series. That really is a good cast, but who HBO brings in as directors will probably be as important as anything else.
