Shirley Temple, one of Hollywood’s original child stars, and the top box-office draw four years in a row in the 1930s, passed away yesterday. She was 85.

A huge child star in the 1930s and 40s, Temple retired from acting when she was 22, as her popularity began to wane after adolescence. However, Temple continued to lead a very full life as an adult, running unsuccessfully for Congress before taking positions as the U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia, as well as the Chief of Protocol of the United States from 1976-1977.

Temple married Silver Star recipient Charles Alden Black in 1950, and remained married until he passed away in 2005. They had two children, including Lori, who was the bassist for The Melvins.

Shirley Temple died of natural causes in her home surrounded by family.

RIP Shirley Temple. Take a bow for an exceptional life.
