Samuel L. Jackson Confirms That Elizabeth Olsen Will Play The Scarlet Witch In 'The Avengers: Age Of Ultron'

For a long time it was rumored that Saoirse Ronan would be playing the part of the Scarlet Witch in Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron. But in a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, Samuel L. Jackson confirmed that the lovely Elizabeth Olsen will be donning the red bustier instead. He said:

“I don’t think we begin shooting before March of next year. I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.”

This is great news because Olsen is not only talented, she’s luminous in an off-beat way. I’m not sure how, exactly, that luminosity will fit in the aforementioned red bustier, but I’m excited to find out.

Wow, Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen sure is pretty in that header photo.

    That is all.

  • stella beat?

While I have lived all my life certain that DDs are a superpower, how that is any kind of fighting outfit is boggling to the mind.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

I've always been partial to Starfire's costume myself. One of the most practical fighting outfits I've ever seen:

I know that it makes sense, because he is in the show, but Samuel L. Jackson should confirm more things, just because it would make great titles. If I knew Samuel L. Jackson, I would have him make every official announcement for me. "Samuel L. Jackson confirms the couple is engaged." "Samuel L. Jackson confirms that it is a girl."

Working on my coffee now, sorry.

  • Erin S

Wow. I thought this was for SHIELD, not the actual Avengers movie. Double sorry.

  • Joe Grunenwald

Is it weird that the confirmation part comes in editorial brackets?

That aside, I like this choice.

  • Leaving miss Ronan open for the Runaways film.

I also agree that the costume should be re-designed so that it's actually practical... and I will be utterly pissed off when it is re-designed, because damn it, look at that! Please, Ms Olsen, on behalf of room-dwelling nerds everywhere, embrace the source material. I'll go buy nine more copies of the brilliant Martha Marcy May Marlene if you do...

In a caffeine-free coma this morning, I read that as she'd be taking Scarlett Johansson's spot and went "Nooooooooooo!" I'm so glad to have been wrong.

  • zeke_the_pig

It will probably fit in a lot more comfortably than the Scarlet Witch in that picture. Her crotch looks like it's trying to orchestrate a desperate last-ditch attempt prison break.

  • Muhnah_Muhnah

And how is that...bustier?...staying on her boobs exactly? I mean, surely, the laws of physics can only be stretched so far. There's no tape in the world strong enough, and it would have to be directly applied to her nipples...right, I need to stop looking at that picture. it's hurting my brain.

  • manting

scarlet witch? She can manipulate probability - like the probability that her chesticles would somehow stay in that ridiculous outfit. I believe there aren't too many females working in the comic book industry hence the Barbie doll figures of nearly every superheroine and supervillianess.

  • Long_Pig_Tailor

    Because magic.

  • My instinctive reaction was just to go "OW OW OW" at that photo. Because...come on, people.

  • Joe Grunenwald

That is some truly terrible art.

  • Legally Insignificant

I really hope they modify the costume. As much as I dig T&A, I also dig semi-functional costumes. Make me believe that a superheroine could actually fight in her costume without suffering a wardrobe malfunction. I read somewhere about how a breastplate with actual breasts on it would direct all bullets directly into the center of the chest, thus killing the individual. Think, people!

  • foolsage

Breastplates weren't designed to block bullets though. ;)

Still, point well made. Silly costumes are silly.

  • Fabius_Maximus

The dents in boobplate would also be serious weak points.

  • ZbornakSyndrome

Considering they modified Hawkeye's outfit to make it less silly, I hope that they'll afford the same consideration to Olsen.

  • Aaron Schulz

they took away stupid fins on the sides of Caps helmet, i cant imagine they will make her look like that.

  • NateMan

I'm sure it'll be modified. I have high hopes for Whedon in that regard.

  • Joe Grunenwald

Looks like Whedon's already talked about this - he'll be ditching the bustier and the headpiece for a simpler look.
