Four years ago, riding on a wave of popularity spurred by The Proposal, Ryan Reynolds ended up starring in the Green Lantern, a film that not only badly underperformed at the box office, but one that halted Ryan Reynolds’ supposed ascension as the next big action star.

The problem, however, wasn’t Reynolds. In fact, the problem with Green Lantern was the same problem plaguing many undercooked, underdeveloped, and harried comic-book movies rushed to cineplexes to exploit the public’s weakness for superheroes: It had a shitty script.

Rather, according to Ryan Reynolds in an interview with Yahoo, it had no script at all.

When we shot Green Lantern, nobody auditioning for the role of Green Lantern was given the opportunity to read the script, because the script didn’t exist. I’m not complaining about it — it was an opportunity of a lifetime, and if I were to go back and retrace my steps, I would probably do everything the exact same way. But script, that’s what’s different on [Deadpool].
.

That certainly tracks, given what an incoherent mess Green Lantern ultimately was, although Iron Man didn’t have a script, either, and Robert Downey, Jr. made that work, which I suppose illustrates the difference between RDJ and R-Squared. But can you blame Reynolds for turning down Green Lantern? I mean, it could’ve been Bradley Cooper, and then what? Would Ryan Reynolds have starred in American Sniper was fetched Oscar nominations three years in a row? (Unlikely)

But don’t you worry your pretty little geek heads about Deadpool, which Reynolds admitted in the interview owed its green light “100 percent” to the leaked test footage. He says that not only has the Deadpool script been complete for three years now, but it was also leaked and fans loved the script, as well. Granted, he will be working with a much smaller budget than the one he had on Green Lantern, but then again, they don’t need as much money to disguise all the plot holes, do they?
