I've heard this line of reasoning before. If people are talking about it, then they're doing something right. I think of it as the "Mad Men" defense after the ep where they talk about the Volkswagen ad and Don Draper says pretty much the same thing. The problem is that we aren't actually talking about it. We're not really discussing the issues he brought up and whether or not he has a point. We're pointing and laughing at the clown.

We're mocking him. We're making fun of him. If his job was to become a bigger laughingstock than he is now, then he should pack a sock in his flight suit and hang the "Mission Accomplished" banner because that's what he did.
