The early aughts, I'd hoped, were a time in cinema like the late '80s were for mainstream music: Something we'd all just as soon forget. It was those years where movies like The Mummy, The Fast and the Furious and xXx inexplicably made gobs of money, even though most of the people knew they were bad movies before they even set foot inside the theater. There must have been something about post 9/11 America which rendered us incapable of even a modicum of discriminating taste.

Unfortunately, with the huge success of last year's resurrection of Fast & Furious franchise, it looks like Rob Cohen -- who directed F&F before leaving the franchise along with Vin Diesel to do xXx -- will be reuniting with Vin to attempt to resurrect that franchise, as well, after Ice Cube came in and wrecked what was already a shitty concept.

Indeed, Deadline is reporting that Diesel will star and Cohen will direct 3D xXx, which will use actual 3D cameras (gasp!). Paramount is going to take over the franchise from Columbia. In the movie, Xander Cage -- left for dead -- will return to complete a difficult assignment only he can pull off (?). Even Sam Jackson will return from the original, as Xander Cage's handler.

And here's a brilliantly dumb quote from Cohen: "With the new 3D instrument and the techniques I can apply, we can create a different kind of cutting-edge experience in 3D by shooting it that way from the beginning the way James Cameron did Avatar. This won't be fantasy characters, it takes place on Earth in real time. That's a new dimension to be explored, and I'm excited."

A movie that takes place in real time. On Earth. And that's the new dimension to be explored? Jesus Christ. That's the selling point? "It's gonna be just like Avatar, brah! Except it's gonna take place on Earth. With real people! It's gonna melt your mind, brah! If you thought Sam Worthington exploring a three dimensional fantasy CGI world on the back of a flying dinosaur was cool, wait until you see Vin Diesel walk down a city street. In 3D! Hang on to your dicks, boys. It's gonna be the ride of your life!"
