The Best Golden Globes Hosts of All Time

A Seriously Random List / Dustin Rowles

Hey Everybody! Great news: It was announced today that Ricky Gervais, he of “The Office,” and “Extras” fame (and who also wrote and starred in The Invention of Lying, which wasn’t very good) is set to host the Golden Globes this year. But before you get excited, let’s take second to remember that 1) while the Golden Globes are generally more entertaining than the Oscars, part of that reason is because there a) is no host, b) everybody is drunk and, 2) as Jon Stewart has proven as host of the Oscars, no host — no matter how good — can truly salvage an awards ceremony. They can deliver a decent monologue, but at the end of the day, awards ceremonies are still about often pompous actors thanking people you don’t know or care about.

So with that, here are the Five Best Golden Globes Hosts of All Time:

5.

4. Lauren Bacall (1999)

3.

2.

1. Ricky Gervais (2010)

Dude, nobody watches that shit.

As god awful as award shows are, at least most of them aren't the Emmyss or the Grammys.

Posted by: George at October 26, 2009 8:30 PM

Ha! D made a funny.

Posted by: Cindy at October 26, 2009 8:36 PM

Good list. Too bad Gervais will be wasted on the DUMBEST awards show in the universe. That includes anything preceded by "MTV" and "Teen".

Isn't it weird having a non-American hosting?

How many British sitcoms are nominated for Golden Globes this year?

Posted by: Daniel Hall at October 26, 2009 9:34 PM

Not really weird, considering the voters are the foreign press.

Posted by: sansho1 at October 26, 2009 10:06 PM

Daniel Hall, considering that the Golden Globes are the awards given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, I think it's actually fitting that a non-American is hosting.

kyle, see what you get for wasting time with html tags and official nomenclature and whatnot? Second place, that's what!!

Posted by: sansho1 at October 26, 2009 10:17 PM

well I've learned my lesson. No more html, no more precision or clarity...just free-range comments and opinions! No holds will be barred! No punches pulled! It's a brave new world, sweet tits, welcome to it!

Posted by: kyle at October 26, 2009 10:27 PM

Damn, that's beautiful -- I'm already having trouble understanding you.

Posted by: sansho1 at October 26, 2009 10:32 PM

What, Eddie Izzard was unavailable?

Posted by: Guess Who! at October 26, 2009 10:39 PM

Yeah. Ummmm. Right. Who the hell watches these shows?
And, can Gervais' quirky brand of comedy appeal to 'The Average Uhmericun'. I can hear it now:
'I dunnow Paw, they done got some foreign feller on the TeeVee. I cain't understand a word he's say'un.'
'Maw, get my shootin' stick.'

So happy about this! Gervais is so quick, he will be an exceptional host. Also, if anyone gets a bit too heady, Gervais will take them down a peg or two. Awesome!

My prediction is that these Wal-Mart enthusiasts will stare blankly at their "picture boxes," utterly dumbfounded. Some will call their local police, others will call their pastors/ conservative congressmen the majority will, sadly, revert to their natural state and start flinging feces at each other.

You know what was awesome?

Lauren Bacall getting Bada-Binged coming home from an awards ceremony in that Sopranos episode.
