Renewal and Cancellations: More Marvel, More Karen Gillan, and Less Malin Akerman (Probably)

ABC went on a pick-up spree yesterday, and the big news is this: Not only is ABC renewing Agents of SHIELD for another season, but they’re also adding Agent Carter, the Captain America spin-off centered on Hayley Atwell’s character. Set in 1946, Peggy Carter finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life — Steve Rogers.

I hope they do a better job out of the gate with it than they did with Agents of SHIELD. Also, it does bring us one step closer to Marvel world domination.

In addition, ABC also renewed Modern Family, The Goldbergs, Revenge, Scandal, Castle and Grey’s Anatomy and Resurrection, for some reason. Surprisingly, they have not yet pulled the trigger on the ever-reliable The Middle, although they are expected to. On the other hand, Trophy Wife and Suburgatory are still in limbo, but they are not expected to be renewed (and the cast of Trophy Wife, as well as Mixology, more or less confirmed cancellations).

ABC also picked up a lot of new shows, and looking over them, I honestly don’t feel like any of them will ever make it to a second season. Of particular note is Selfie, which comes from Emily Kapnek (Suburgatory), and stars Karen Gillan as Eliza Dooley, a self-obsesed woman with a huge social network following who endeavors to make actual real-life friends (John Cho also stars).

Not that interesting, but SPOILERS FOR HANNIBAL: Black-ish — about a successful black family in the suburbs that seeks to maintain its cultural identity — stars Anthony Anderson and, uh, Laurence Fishburne, in case you’re wondering how that flash-forward at the beginning of this season of Hannibal plays out. END SPOILERS FOR HANNIBAL.

Shonda Rhimes also has a new show, this one a legal drama with Viola Davis called How to Get Away with Murder. The Whispers is an alien drama with Lily Rabe that will be cancelled after six episodes. Galavant sounds kind of interesting. It’s a musical comedy fairytale about the dashing hero, Galavant (Joshua Sasse) who lost the love of his life, Madalena (Mallory Jansen) to the evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson) and has to take revenge and restore his happily ever after.

The rest? They don’t inspire a lot of enthusiasm.

The Agent Carter short film was excellent; it's a strong property with a lead whose performance in that character was almost universally admired. Frankly, it's in a better place to launch than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was before its first season.

  • Aaron Schulz

I hope it doesnt have the 5 or whatever extra hangers on that S.H.I.E.L.D. has, just make it Atwell, Howard Stark, and maybe one or two other people. AoS wouldve been much better with a slimmer cast.

COMMENT ABOUT THE HANNIBAL SPOILER ITEM:

AV Cub is saying that Laurence Fishburne has been changed from "series regular" to "recurring" on Hannibal, so you may be incorrect in your assumption.

  • foolsage

Ahhhhhh ok, I was wondering how far offscript Hannibal was wandering.

  • Three_nineteen

He may be coming back just for flashbacks and dream sequences. You never know.

  • foolsage

True. He's a central character, but that could change.

  • Modernlove

And I read elsewhere he will only be recurring on Black-ish as well. Two different networks could make it tricky, but it's entirely possible he can be on both.

  • Three_nineteen

Apparently it's the new in thing for actors to do multiple series. Zach Woods (Gabe from The Office) is currently recurring on Veep and a regular on both Silicon Valley and Playing House (which is a new show on USA). The way that a lot of series are going with 10-14 episode seasons leaves time to work on multiple things, plus the fact that having less episodes per season means the actors don't get paid as much as they would for a 22 episode season, so it's probably a necessity for some of them.

RE: Black-ish Boo Dustin Boo Not enough warning.

Also I'd totally watch it if it was a Suburgatory spin-off with the LaFreaks.

  • I hope Marvel pitched 'Agent Carter' better than you did just now, because that was somewhat underwhelming. I'm pretty sure we've all already seen 'Alias' and could just look it up on Netflix or Amazon if we wanted to see it again.

  • That pitch was taken from the press release, I believe. Looks to me like the 'Agent Carter' is already painted itself into a corner. It's going to pick up after the One Shot, so doesn't that mean there is going to need to have liberal amounts of Toby Jones and Dominic Cooper to tell the story of SHIELD and its infiltration by HYDRA?

  • foolsage

I don't know how they could do this without a lot of Howard Stark's implicit presence; at least as much as Nick Fury has had in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Zola, on the other hand, doesn't need to be front and center. In fact, I'd be disappointed if they show us HYDRA's infiltration in the past.

  • Daniel Lewis

At least Bradley Whitford is free now.

  • Muhnah_Muhnah

Wouldn't mind another Alias. I loved that show. Just maybe skip the wigs and the terrible accents...and whatever the hell happened in Season 5. If they somehow get Lena Olin and Victor Garber to play an evil Russian super-spy couple, I'll throw money at the TV every week.

  • TherecanbeonlyoneAdmin

Fuck ABC in the face for renewing Grey's Anatomy. I was hoping some sense of decency or self loathing would make them cancel it so it would stop filling my daughter's heads with utter and repulsive bullshit. Which reminds me, I need to sanction my wife for introducing them to it. I'M GOING ON A COOKING STRIKE UNTIL THE TORTURE STOPS!

  • Uriah_Creep

so it would stop filling my daughter's heads with utter and repulsive bullshit

Damn, son, how many heads does your poor daughter have?

  • Lord Inferno

Having to live in a co-ed dorm when that show first started... utter madness. The entire female population of the dorm would congregate every week. When they weren't watching it, they were talking about it.

Meanwhile, my Sci-Fi Friday Battelstar Galactica-athon attendance? Just me.

  • Muhnah_Muhnah

If they fuck up Peggy Carter, I'll burn the whole place down. With Hollywood's baffling inability to write a female character who isn't an utter moron, there's a risk the whole damn show will be her beating up goons while bemoaning her spinsterhood!

  • foolsage

Have you seen the Agent Carter short film? I think they really get the character.

  • Muhnah_Muhnah

Yes, but what about TV execs going "But we really need to appeal to young women! Women like shoes, right? Let's make her buy lots of shoes. Pink shoes. And give her a pony. And I think she needs a boyfriend who'll rescue her every now and then. Because girls need rescuing. Can we make her a princess?"

  • foolsage

That's always a danger, sure. At least here we're starting with a character that absolutely doesn't think or act that way - and the audience knows this.

  • Mrs. Julien

Will you really though, or will you grudgingly watch each week because you can't help yourself?

  • Muhnah_Muhnah

I'm pretty sure we've never met, yet you know me so well. Are you a witch?

I'll just have to drink more wine. That's how I get through Agents of SHIELD.

  • Lord Inferno

I will watch the shit out of anything Karen Gillan is in...

"... a self-obsesed woman with a huge social network following who endeavors to make actual real-life friends ..."

Oh dear god... I instinctively punched my laptop screen reading that.

Why must you test my loyalty and resolve my Ginger Empress!

  • Guest

I hope the Selfie pick up doesn't mean the end of Suburgatory. Gaining one redhead at the loss of another is not a timeline I want to be a part of.

I fully support Kapnek's mission of putting more gingers ( Kapnek is also a ginger) on TV.

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.c...

*Does Gillan get to keep her Scottish accent forSelfie ?

  • Lord Inferno

Any and all actions leading to an increase in the ratio of the Ginger kind on our tele-inter-tube-flix boxes have the full support of the High Ginger Council.

*The High Ginger Council would like to remind all of the ruddy haired and pale skinned to use sunscreen today. Remember, the sun is our mortal enemy. Red skin lets him win!*

  • Afferbeck

I hope she uses her normal accent and not some horrible valley girl american accent

  • BWeaves

Why do I love Karen Gillan but hate all the characters she plays?

  • Guest

How can you hate Amy Pond and Daisy?

  • BWeaves

She treated Rory like shit and I loved Rory.

  • DominaNefret

    Yes. This.

  • Guest

Don't hate Amy for Moffat and the other writers bad characterization, all of the good easily out weighs the bad. Same applies for Clara.

  • DominaNefret

No no. The bad in Amy far outweighs the good.

  • Lord Inferno

I still am in deep, psychotic, wibbly-woobly, timey-wimey love with early Amy Pond.

  • dizzylucy

Happy the Goldberg got renewed, it's grown on me.
I adore Viola Davis, I think she's lovely and talented and intelligent, and I so want to support her in everything...but I don't know if I can subject myself to another Shonda Rimes show.

"evil King Richard (Timothy Omundson)" yes please.

  • JenVegas

"... a musical comedy fairytale about..." Nope, stop right there. I'll pass, thanks though.
