Silent Bob Sure Talks a Lot

At the Sundance Film Festival, Kevin Smith’s Red State is finally getting released if not into the wild, at least into a zoo. There are a couple things of note to come out of the screenings.

First, the reviews have been mixed at best. CinemaBlend put together a sort of miniature Rotten Tomatoes, listing the wee little twitter reviews of what they call “established critics.” Other than a handful that amount to “OMG so awesome,” most of the tweets are something along the lines of “tries hard, not terrible, not great.”

Personally, I feel that posting 140 character reviews on twitter should be an automatic disqualification from being “established,” if only because I feel there should be standards of taste. And yes, I did check the Pajiba twitter feed to make sure that Dustin and Seth weren’t doing exactly that before I filed this piece. Can’t be too careful with film critics, they’re an unstable bunch.

Of course, Dustin and Seth didn’t actually get to see Red State because they only allowed 25 members of the press in to see it. Since I can fit more people than that in my living room to watch a movie on my television, I assume this means that they’re screening Red State in a bathroom on Smith’s iPhone. Either that or most of the screening room was reserved for more important people than the press, like members of Congress and Nobel Prize winners. I understand those two groups make up most of the attendance at Sundance. But come on, Kevin, buddy, we’ve always been honest with you, and we’d give you a thousand words, not 140 characters. They might have been bile-filled explosions of rage, but they would have been nuanced and honest, while containing not a single text message acronym or punctuation smiley face.

Second, Kevin Smith confirmed the rumor that Hit Somebody, his hockey movie that seems like it’s been in pre-production since before Clerks was released, will be his last film. Since he’s listed on several other upcoming projects, it’s unclear whether he’s skipping out on those projects, whether he intends on doing the other projects first, or whether this is just more hyperbole. Smith did indicate that he planned to dedicate his time to helping other filmmakers.

Third, Kevin Smith announced at the beginning of the screening that at the end of the film, he would be publicly auctioning off the rights to the film right there in the theater. Instead, once the auction began, Smith bought the rights from himself for $20. He then announced that he was taking the film on a road trip across the country, screening it personally for fans. Presumably some sort of charge will be levied for entry. Ass, grass, or cash, no one watches Red State for free.

Wow. That amount of cockiness shouldn't be possible simultaneously with that level of "poor me" syndrome but somehow he does it.

Thank you Kevin Smith. If that's really the kind of asshole you've become, then retiring is the best thing you can do for all of us.

Well, that answers that question.

I'm not going to do it, but maybe someone should tell Kevin Smith that he's dribbled some bullshit on his beard and we can all see it.

So, to paraphrase Smith, "I'm going to screen this movie to handpicked groups of people because I'm tired of other, objective people criticizing my work even though I know, deep down, I've dropped a deuce."

Credibility thy name is Bob.

I'll see it. Meh...Radio City Music Hall is the first showing

Kevin Smith, meet me at camera 2...

Listen pal, I love ya'. I do. Despite yourself, I love your movies. I think they're funny without being too satisfied with being funny. I think they're emotional without being melodramatic. You aren't the best director -- let's be honest -- but you have a good understanding of the human condition and it shows on-screen.

But for the love of God, sir, you need to crawl out of your cavernous ass and grow a pair of balls. If you're out to satisfy the fans, then seriously -- what do you fucking care what the critics think? Why do you care that the industry is corrupt and broken? Why do you feel that the spotlight should be on YOU instead of YOUR WORK?

I think you've let the fame go to your head. I think you need to stay off the internet for a while and get your head together. I think you need to get back to doing what you're good at, and leave the rest to your management team.

I love you Smith, but I'm dangerously close to taking your DVDs off the wall and filing them into spindles with the rest of my collection.

I love it, I love the fact that I have a front row seat to this guy’s unraveling. There are no more podcast, no more evenings with Kevin Smith, all tools that he used to hide his mediocre talent. Maybe if you’re Scorsese you can get away with being a world class dick, but if you are a mediocre director you can’t walk around acting like your shit smells like country linen. He has gone off the reservation, the only problem is that no one gives a fuck anymore except his loyal brainwashed fans.

i think social media--twitter, facebook--and blogging and hyper up-to-the-minute press accounting is unraveling a lot of public figures and creators. an awareness of constant scrutiny, combined with the perceived need to stay in constant communication with the public/audience and the endless interactive feedback chatter is shattering people's minds, their sense of time, of relavence, of priority, of privacy, of reflection.

it's a fibre-optic/wi-fi schizophrenia.

Why is he retiring? He's like 40.

Dang it. I've read a super fan's review. I had to spend last night scrolling through the plethora of #redstate tweets - they were trying to get it to trend. I was dying to see what you guys though of the movie and of this and this. And by you guys I mean everyone here... I know nothing about the movie business and wanted to if, in fact, this was a ballsy move and will change the way that movies are distributed? Can someone enlighten me?

Posted by: Az at January 24, 2011 1:42 PM

Wanted to KNOW if this is a ballsy move, sorry!

Posted by: Az at January 24, 2011 1:43 PM

Why is Kevin Smith even newsworthy on this site? Does "Clerks" automagically erase your memory of every other movie he's made since then?

The guy makes terrible movies.

Posted by: Horace at January 24, 2011 3:26 PM

I did not care for Clerks.
