We already know that The Good Wife is the drama that cast the best guest stars on network television (in fact, during its run, they should just rename the Guest Star Emmy the Good Wife Emmy), but in the comedy world, “The Mindy Project” may be the leader among networks. “The Office” had a lot of great ones over the course of its too many seasons, “New Girl” does solid work, and “Happy Endings” had some great guest stars during its run. But in one season (and a few planned second-season episodes), “The Mindy Project” is killing it, and not just in love interests for Mindy, but in female guest stars as well (Chloe Sevigny, Ellie Kemper).

How good is Kaling at landing big-name love interests? Here’s her ten best so far, including two from the upcoming second season (not included, James Franco and Kris Humphries, both cast in season two episodes, but I don’t know if they’ll play love interests or not).

    Mindy digs the vanilla, huh?

[edit] so comments on this downstream. And I think most shows that feature serial daters also feature questions about getting some diversity in the mix. She's a doctor - and if you want ethnic diversity in NYC, you don't have to look any farther than a hospital. No, she doesn't *have* to, but is it such a chore to be mindful of it? If you're aware of the fact, maybe because you talk about being marginalized as an actress of color, is it maybe a pretty easy way to carry the torch?

It's not like anyone's suggesting she date ugly guys.

  • Three_nineteen

On one hand, I understand what you're saying. On the other hand, it almost sounds like you are applauding other shows with all-white main casts for including "diversity" by making some of their dates minorities.

  • Sara_Tonin00

No, I'm not even saying that shows with all white casts ARE dating minorities - just saying that I think people say "hey, why aren't there more minorities on this show?" - in response to people noting that Mindy saying she doesn't think other shows are asked that question as much. (I'm sure she gets the question a lot; I'm not sure how tuned she is to whether other people get the question as well).

Do they comment on her show at all about her propensity for white guys? I haven't seen any episodes where they do (I've got about 6 episodes dvr'd). And I can't think of a non-white friend who WOULDN'T get those questions from family members/other minorities if they only dated white guys.

  • Three_nineteen

Well, you don't have to worry about what Mindy's family or non-white friends are saying, because so far she doesn't have any. Her brother has been on twice, and we haven't seen any other family. Her non-work friends are white. Her co-workers are white. Her mid-wife rivals are white. Heck, even the foreign guy is white. Other than a black nurse that was on for about two episodes and rumor has maybe coming back next season, the closest thing to another minority on the show is Danny, because he's Italian and from Staten Island.

  • cgthegeek

Yes. The singing sassy Black female nurse. Yay.

  • Bedewcrock

I cringed.....and still cringe. Really? The one non-white person has to fit in THAT box? It's so tired.

  • Jo 'Mama' Besser

Not true. There were also the 'black guys who love her' who turned out to be thieves.

  • Sara_Tonin00

(for the record, I'm not upvoting the whiteness, I'm upvoting the record of it)

  • Olyphant tends to top any list that has Olyphant in it.
    This is not a complaint.

  • Three_nineteen

Josh is only #10? He was my favorite character while he was on the show. In fact, I may have stopped watching it around episode 5 if there had been no Josh. It's not his fault that Kaling decided Mindy had to be a single girl and date a lot, which led to his bullshit cheating and exit from the show. I know Mindy and Danny will end up together eventually, but I think she and Josh were great together. I think this should have been one of those times where a show realized what they had in Tommy Dewey and changed the plan so he could stay.

  • westcott

    What. The. Hell.
The amount of lady wood that I have for Olyphant cannot be ignored . . . that being said, how in the hell did Anders only make #8???
Who else can pull off a drunken line like "I look great and I smell legit!"?
Seriously questioning your list making abilities Rowles.

  • MGMcD

Agreed. #1 and #2 are correct, so sayeth my lions, but I'd put Ders at a firm third place.

  • Bedewcrock

I think the only reason BJ Novak is that high is because everyone likes him outside of this show and that they dated/are friends in real life. His character was fairly meh.

Drunk Anders/Bill Hader fight was the best. Also the whole Anders/Mindy shower scene was hilarious; the Frozen Tundra is not sexy.

  • dizzylucy

    Olyphant? Olyphant!!!
I'm looking forward to season 2, I think the show got progressively funnier as it went on, and I'm hoping it continues. And that episode was the only time I've ever liked Seth Rogen.

  • emmalita

I love that on Twitter, Kaling fangirled and called him Raylan Givens.

  • pfeiffer87

I've only watched a few episodes of the show but just wondering - does she only date/hook up with white men?

  • princessdi81

    Yes.

  • pajiba

Mindy Kaling has actually addressed that question, stating: ā€œDo people really wonder on other shows if female leads are dating multicultural people? Like I owe it to every race and minority and beleaguered person. I have to become the United Nations of shows?ā€

  • cgthegeek

I see her point but... clearly she doesn't understand "the deal": that she's representing all women and South Asian women now.

I don't think "the deal" is fair or right, but when you are a minority in the spotlight people tend to use you as a litmus test for all minorities. Succeed or fail, Kaling represents many minority groups and folks are shaping their views on women and South Asians based upon her actions on the show. Again it's not right but that's how people tend to work. Unfortunately.

  • Jo 'Mama' Besser

Back before I gave up on the show, I wondered if there was some kind of white knight complex, as it were. I don't know. I've known some women of colour who really get off on being the minority girl who can actually attract white guys and if you were a black girl who pull it off you were a damned MVP. Take from that what you will.

  • cgthegeek

I think for women of color, a group so rarely presented as the love interest in media, it does make us feel good to see an attractive male find us desirable. and if it's someone who is not our same race it's a bonus. See: Scandal. All too often educated career-oriented Black women are derided in the media in within our own communities, it's very refreshing to see a bunch of White guys chasing after Oliva Pope.

I think in some ways Mindy's dating patterns speak to that desire also, but I also think there are many other issues here at play, ones that are specific to South Asian culture.

  • Erin S

Apparently her interracial relationships have a lack of diversity.

  • Jo 'Mama' Besser

That was golden! Hats off to Hanukkah!

  • googergieger

Yeah, that's cool. Instead of the UN of shows though, how about I don't know, becoming an actually funny show?

  • Jo 'Mama' Besser

Oh goodness, thank-you. I used to love her. How does someone go from doing such stellar writing on a workplace comedy to doing such, I don't know. I catch a lot of shit because I think she's gone devo.

  • mairimba

All the main guys she's dated have all been white. At least that I remember.

  • Robert

    No.

  • Michelle

    OLYPHANT.

  • Monica

    Ughhhh no, no, no Olyphant.

  • Mrs. Julien

When I went to university in the late 1880s, all female sociology students were required to have Olyphant's hairstyle up top there, and the higher the bangs the better.

  • DeltaJuliet

I miss those big bangs. The ozone is probably glad that's over though.

  • Fabius_Maximus

    I hope the year's a typo.

  • Mrs. Julien

It was my little attempt at humour.

  • Fabius_Maximus

    Never explain the joke. ;)

  • emmalita

Mrs. J has lived many lifetimes.
