Will “Pushing Daisies” Soon Be *Ahem* …

…Pushing Daisies? / Seth Freilich

Trade News | November 10, 2008 | Comments (24)

Word is slowly spreading around the net that ABC’s “Pushing Daisies” is not long for this world. At this point, it’s nothing more than rumors and hearsay, but the feeling is that the critically-adored but ratings-troubled show may not get a full season pickup, which would be the quietest way of canceling it. And adding fuel to that fire, the show’s creator Bryan Fuller has said that, if the show doesn’t get a back-nine pickup in January, he’s ready to jump ship and return to his former “Heroes” stomping ground.

Now I’m purely speculating here, but I wonder if Fuller didn’t put this out there in an attempt to force ABC’s hand. Fuller is a critical darling, and even though “Daisies” isn’t getting great ratings, ABC may not want the egg on its face that would result if Fuller went to NBC and helped them fix their sinking “Heroes” franchise. So if the show has some fans at the network who are fighting for its survival, maybe this will be enough to get it over the hump with a full order. If not, ah well, it was a fun little run.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Phil? Can we get something a little more solemn. Mournful even?

I dated a girl who brought me into this show. Another disappointment seeing this end as well.

All in all, this show brought back my love for loud color.

Maybe I should stop dating girls who wear loud colors.

The situation was this: Pushing Daisies was not long for this world not matter how much the Pie Maker longed for it. And while Chuck was sad, she refused to give up and had secretly hatched a plan. She would get Emerson Cod to visit the offices of the ABC Executives and use his gruff manners for good this time.

*Your line*

So we live in a world where formulaic dreck like CSI can run for ten thousand years, but Pushing Daisies has to fight for a full second season? Fan-fucking-tastic.

Thank you, viewing public, for being so goddamn mediocre.

And im guessing Dancing with the Stars/Bachelor/that stupid show with the money in the suitcases/ will all be coming back. while Daisies goes away. Hopefully they wont pull a "Dead Like Me" and atleast give us a conclusion worthy of the show.

I know this show gets a lotta love here on Pajiba, and that is fine, and so I've held my peace.

I watched the pilot episode, and then, out of a sense of fairness, the second episode. I just was not impressed.

I get that it's all quirky and cute and different and everything. I was impressed by the marvelous colorful look. Swoosie Kurtz is an underappreciated actress; I love Chi McBride and the rest of the cast is perfectly fine...The show just doesn't do it for me.

I don't hate the show or anything. I just didn't like it enough to keep watching. It is the exact same reaction I had to Wonderfalls. I don't get the effusive love for it just because it's "different." It's not THAT different.

For the sake of you guys who do like it, I hope Seth's conspiracy theory is correct and the show gets to stay on longer. It's no skin off mine either way--I won't be tuning in to ABC at all until 8:00 CST on January 21st.

I refuse to live in a world without the Darling Mermaid Darlings, so if this comes to fruition, well...it was nice knowing you all.

i love all things Bryan Fuller--including Voyager. i can't say that i'm surprised considering what happened to Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls, but i am really disappointed.

Heroes could really use his help though.

Jerce, I'm with you. I got bored with it rather quickly. Loved most of the stars (save Kristin-freaky-elf-girl Chenoweth), but for me the premise just got old before the end of the first season.

It's hard to be surprised at news like this when it's happened over and over again to so many shows I have loved. It's like that guy in Monty Python and the Holy Grail who built his castle on the swamp. You get a great cast, witty writing, but for some reason that defies explanation, nobody is watching. Then it's just gone, sunk into the swamp.
That said, I don't want to lose my weekly fix of Lee Pace, because I love Ned's stuttering, I love Emerson Cod's tough attitude, I love Olive's spirit and spunk, I even love Chuck's optimism and thirst for living. I don't want the show to end right now, but there's not a whole lot that can be done. We can't exactly send peanuts to save it. So...I'm still hoping for the best. But people suck, so I'm not expecting much.

I like this show, but I tend to watch it online, cause it's not really appointment TV for me. It's cute and fluffy and colorful, but it's not something where I feel I absolutely have to see it at the moment it airs.

Still, it's a hell of a lot better than most of the stuff on TV, so it is disappointing that it can't hold onto it's spot while "Private Practice", which is by all accounts horrible, can.

Anyone know who to write to about this? It's officially my favorite show, and it kills me that it's on the chopping block. Give me hot Georgia Peach with cinnamon ice cream or give me death!!!

Posted by: Aratweth at November 10, 2008 2:14 PM

My wife introduced me to this show. We're both die-hard fans (I even watched this rather than the Obama informercial two weeks ago, and I supported that man almost from the beginning!). We're both die-hard fans of "Arrested Development," were big fans of "Boomtown" back when it was on (the good, first season, not the re-tooled, half-assed attempt at a second season that sucked hot death) and recently were introduced, belatedly, to the glory that was "Firefly." We've been expecting this show to die simply by virtue that we love it.

Well, look on the bright side: at least if and when "Pushing Daisies" gets canceled we'll have another procedural/lawyer/medical dramedy to look forward to! (Did I say "bright side?" I meant horrible black hole of menial, not-even-trying TV hack-assery.)

Bah, I guess the not-so-big dvd box set will have to sit with somber dignity next to the even smaller Wonderfalls box set...in close proximity to the just-as-small box sets of Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared.
The American public may one day accept intelligent quirkiness over sludge. Hopefully, Bryan Fuller will still be around when that day comes. On a optimistic note, Heroes could definitely benefit from him.

If they cancel it we should Pie the ABC execs. Just find the HQ and dress as clowns (For camouflage) then slam a pie in their grill. And keep smashing and smashing until the cherry mixes with the sputum and humors and they beg us "Please, what can I do to stop this!" and we say "We want you to bring the show back to life but you have to play by Ned's rules. You can never touch it again and Grey's Anatomy must die in it's place!" and then we hire Jim Dale for some clever narration.

It sucks it's on the block but I don't think any of us are surprised. Shows like this just don't make a big enough splash on the networks. That said, ending a series without giving a fucking resolution should be punishable by death.

I'm looking at you F/X (The Riches).

You guys, I hate to be a butthole, but I`m desperate here.

Sign the damn petition! Sign it many times! GAHHHHHHH! PLEASE DON`T LET THEM CANCEL THIS DAMN SHOW.

At least give us the answer to Lil' Gumshoe. I'd love to see Emerson reunited with her. He's my favorite character by far. Gruff but also hilarious with a sweet side. And I loved his disguise from a few weeks ago.

Posted by: Optimus Rhyme at November 10, 2008 4:34 PM

NOOOOOOOO say it isn't so!! I'll admit I don't watch in primetime, but I relish every online episode. C'mon ABC, in this time of economic crisis, wouldn't you say we need brightly colored quirky tales of love and life more than ever?

Thanks for sharing the petition

Posted by: Empress of All the Russias at November 10, 2008 5:17 PM

I signed it. I like the comment that says, simply,
I Fancy The Pie Guy.

Posted by: Stacy D at November 10, 2008 5:41 PM

aw, fuck, "the riches", too?
i don't get to watch in prime time, either, but such a great show! there's so much crap on, why did the writer's even bother to strike last year?
and @ sus: i was a HUGE "dead like me" fan. i'm still pissed about that fiasco, especially when it was common knowledge at the time that the third season was already in the can. WTF are these people thinking????

Posted by: bionic bunny at November 10, 2008 8:24 PM

So help me Jebus if you take Lee Pace away from me I will have your heads, ABC!!!!
I WILL COME TO YOUR HOMES AND BRING HELL WITH ME!!!

TV GODS!!! HEAR MY CRY!!! You took Dirt. You took The Riches. You took Firefly which I personally wasn't a fan of but a lot of people on here where!!!You. Took. Dead Like Me.
You've taken TOO MUCH!!! WE HAVE SO LITTLE LEFT!!!WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM US!!!!! ARE WE TO BE EXPECTED TO SWALLOW NOTHING BUT REALITY TV AND WHAT EVER OC/ONE TREE HILL/GOSSIP GIRL/DAWSONS CREEK REHASHING YOU SHIT OUT NEXT?!

We....ask so little...interesting, clever story telling, escape from harsh realities to something ...better.
Why is it so hard to give this to us?

Is it sacrifices? You want sacrifices? You can have them! just tell us what we need to do!!!!!!

This is my favorite show. I have signed a petition and written ABC. I also watch the episodes on my computer on their website(because I don't even have my tv plugged in) to show my support. Seriously the best show on television.
