Punctuating Comedians: "Talking Funny" with Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, Jerry Seinfeld and Louis C.K.

I like a man who knows how to wield his comma (Victor Borge, anyone?). HBO has released a couple of clips from their upcoming comedy special, “Talking Funny.” In the first, Jerry Seinfeld and Louis C.K. discuss punctuating traffic signs; that’s an idea I’ll be having my own fun with next time I hit the streets. (I’d like to add expletives as well: Yield, Motherfucker!) The gathering of “stand up comedy legends” also includes Chris Rock and Ricky Gervais. Seinfeld seems the odd man out here, but in a proper ice cream sundae, someone has to be the vanilla ice cream. It will be interesting to see where the conversation leads and if anyone dominates the group.

Here’s a taste:

While these short clips don’t leave us laughing as much as the comedians themselves, I have to believe there’s a whole lot of funny headed our way. HBO promises insights on how the four started their careers, lessons learned along the way, how far boundaries can be pushed for a laugh, and what sets each of them apart. Directed by John Moffitt, “Talking Funny” premieres April 22 at 9 p.m. EST.

Well in that first clip Seinfeld is obnoxious. He asks Louis CK a question and then takes over the conversation without letting him get half way through his answer. I hate when people do that.

What the hell does Seinfeld know about pushing boundaries? Even kindergartners think his act needs more of an edge.

Reminds me of the Mitch Hedberg joke about how when you get big at stand-up comedy suddenly everyone wants you do things that are related to comedy, but not comedy. ‘Okay, you’re a chef. Can you farm?’
Nonetheless, this is quite comedy, and I love all these guys so I’ll watch.

I miss Mitch :(

NOBODY CARES IF YOU REMEMBER THEIR "BITS," SEINFELD!!!!!!! SHUT YER FUCKIN' HOLE AND LET THE GROWN-UPS TALK, YOU ARROGANT LITTLE SHIT!!!!!

Louis, Chris and Ricky will run circles around him at first, then start holding back because they feel sorry for him, but Jerry will take advantage of their pity to start dominating the forum and fucking everything up while I wonder where he'd be without Larry David's genius guiding "his" show for all those years.

Fuck it all.

The later episodes where they're all forced to wear the Wonder Woman costume are funnier.

This sounds like the Showtime show, The Green Room with Paul Provenza, with a nicer set.

I still love Seinfeld the show, and I hate that I increasingly dislike Seinfeld the person with each passing year. But really, when he was pretty much the only person to come to Leno's defense during Conangate it sealed the deal that he's become (or has always been?) a total dillhole. I accept the fact that the real brains behind Seinfeld belonged to Larry David, which is why I love it so. Also, The Marriage Ref? REALLY?

That being said, Gervais and Rock are amazing and who doesn't worship Louis CK, so I'm in. I just hope Jerry doesn't make me punch my tv before it's done.

I miss Mitch too! I miss him to the point I got angry when they did Greg Giraldo tributes, because I was all "He wasn't funny! Not like Mitch! Where is the Mitch Tribute suckers???"

I want to like Gervais, I do. I like his shows when he's not on them. How's that?

I love Chris Rock, but I hope this show isn't the "two" in the "1-2 Punch" of having done Sandler's "Grown ups".

They did one, you must have missed it. It was called "Every second goddam new comedian since his death has stolen his style". Didn't turn out that well.

As for this show, I'm actually looking forward to it. I'm a little surprised at all the Seinfeld hate (although I know nothing of his stance on Leno-Conan). Chris Rock is the one for me who got old really quickly, and rarely makes me laugh out loud. I'd think this show format would endear him to me a little more though.

And I gotta say, while Larry David is clearly the genius out of the two, I absolutely loved seeing David and Seinfeld together on Curb Your Enthusiasm. They both egg each other on, but Jerry knows enough to back off at a certain point and let Larry be the one to come off as a total dick by telling the receptionist to cover her stomach, or whatever the case may be.

Don't understand the Seinfeld hatred either. Esp when Chris Rock is also available as a target. The man's become a fuckin embarrassment.
