Proportionate Justice Is for Lily-Livered Yellow Bellies

Rainn-Wilson-Super_320.jpg

The idea for James Gunn’s Super — another regular person turned superhero — felt a little more original before a series of these movies, like Kick-Ass and Defendor hit theaters (or, DVD, in the case of the latter). But then again, this is James Gunn, director of Slither, veteran of Troma, and the guy behind the “PG Porn” series. What you’re going to get is a little different, and from the looks of this trailer — and advanced word about Ellen Page’s nutjob character — that direction will skew toward average people dressing up as superheroes to unleash their inner sociopath. It also appears, from this spectacular clip, that Rainn Wilson’s superhero character is not familiar with proportionate punishment.

Hmm, I'd really like to be appalled, but I've had entirely too many daydreams about bashing motherfuckers in the head with a pipe wrench to get too upset.

I think that punishment was proportional given the rampant fuckmunchery. If you're going to be an ass, and then be even more of an ass when you get called out for being an ass, you deserve to get fucked like an ass.

I didn't even get a chance to be appalled, since the MFing clip isn't available in my country. Looks like it's off to YouTube for me again.

FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!

People who do things that marginalize the existence of everyone around them deserve to have their faces raped by justice.

You didn't see all those people in line? Time to bleed, bitch.

You can't even TRY to rotate your shoulders away from contact with others while moving around in a semi-crowded space? Time to bleed, bitch.

You've decided the fast lane is the perfect spot to go 50 mph in your smoke-belching anus on wheels even though the last 4 minutes have seen 73 cars pass you on the right? Time to bleed, bitch.

Want to yap on your cell in a movie theater? Get to bleeding, bitch.

I'm gonna fucking LOVE this movie, by the way.

Yes, yes, and more yes. The only thing that would make this project even more better, would be some role for Patton Oswalt. This is totally in his wheelhouse.

And I'll keep saying it for those who refuse to watch subdued radicalness, but watch The Specials. Now would be as good a time as any.

RobP, or I could just watch the copy that I own. Because The Specials is bloody awesome.

Um, you're not supposed to hit people with a wrench? Sorry guy with 18 items in the express lane. my bad.

Posted by: Mrcreosote at October 22, 2010 11:10 AM

that clip, and the comments celebrating it, are really, really depressing.

dg is above daily annoyances.

dg does not appreciate your petty exaggerations.

But dg is not annoyed.

dg is depressed.

dg can tell the difference.

Can you?

dg, it's pretty obvious from this clip, even without the context of the whole story, that we're supposed to relate to Rainn Wilson's nebbishy Falling Down, not gonna take it anymore character while laughing at the absurdly violent, over-the-top solutions the character brigns to his problems. Dustin has it right, it's going to be about sociopaths wanting to be heroes. We're not meant to emulate them, we're meant to laugh at them. (And probably sympathize with their dilemmas and solutions from a level of fantasy.)

Here's a wrench to loosen the stick in your ass.

In a culture of law, we depend upon authority figures to punish the wicked. But in a culture of honor, where disproportionate vengeance is your own protection, his actions are entirely justified.

i hear you, RobP (and Kballs, I think). didn't mean to come off as superior, but I did. still, I'm personally pretty uncomfortable laughing at scenes like this (someone being brutally beaten, in a fairly realistic way). same reason i was really uncomfortable with Inglorious Basterds (while acknowledging it as an incredible piece of work) and yet completely ok with the Kill Bills- one is asking us to think about how great it would be for us to be able to physically harm people who deserve it. Personally, I'd rather be asked to think a lot less about that. Maybe I have a stick in my ass. Maybe I just don't like celebrating people getting hit with wrenches because they're assholes.
