You Can Get With This, Or You Can Get With That

I love movie posters. Much like trailer editing, there’s a subtle art to it that is rarely mastered, but when they get it right, it can be a beautiful thing. So today, I figured we’d do a little study in contrasts.

First, the poster for Hanna, the deadly-little-girl film starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. It had a badass trailer debut recently, and this poster is pretty phenomenal in its intensity. The film is going to ride on Ronan’s back, and from all accounts, she’s up to the task.

Sick.

OK, next we have the trailer for Duncan Jones’ (Moon) new flick, The Source Code. Also looks like a pretty interesting film, with another outstanding cast — Jake Gyllenhaal, Vera Farmiga, Michelle Monighan and Jeffrey Wright. The trailer looks great, but the poster, well, see for yourself:

Yowza, that is wretched. But never let it be said that Duncan Jones is without a sense of humor. Quickly after the poster debuted on Yahoo, Jones reached out via his Twitter page, saying, “For those asking… No… Source Code does not take place in an exploding Kinkos. lol.” He then added, “Poster works better if you look at it while pressing this button. ;)”

Lol aside, I now love Duncan Jones.

Zowie does indeed rock. I will do a Leaving Las Vegas if Source Code turns out to be mediocre. Gyllenhaal gives me particular cause for concern as he seems to fluctuate from damn good to shit-eating-grin-fuck-shit. Let's hope it's the former.

As for that other film, this post is the first I’ve heard of it, and that poster is pretty badass.

That frustrated howl you just heard came from the poster artist for The Hunger Games movie as they threw their identical design in the trash and started over.

The Hanna poster is good but I could do without the "adapt or die" tag line.

The Source Code poster makes me want run away from the movie just. Like. That.

Agreed.

Also, the "Original Score by The Chemical Brothers" part makes the movie less attractive. I'm afraid it will turn out like the Red Riding Hood trailer.

Brief, unrelated movie poster story.....

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hires a well-known artist every year to do the poster for the 500. One of the years I was working there, the poster was done by the same artist who designed the poster for "A Clockwork Orange" (Bill Gold). And, he was going to be at the race.

Yes, I got a poster and had him autograph it. Yes, I am that big of a geek.

My son was also given a "Revenge of the Jedi" ORIGINAL poster. Any bidders? Boy's going to college someday.....

Why on earth would you put Vera Farmiga in a movie, but NOT (naked) on the poster??

Because she's imprisoned in the Phantom Zone with General Zod.

Cannot wait for both of these.

And who didn't know that anything David Bowie touches is gold?

Posted by: Cindy at January 26, 2011 2:04 PM

Wait, that didn't come out right.

Arrrgh! I made a statement regarding the El oh el at the end of the article and totally forgot that it was banned.

The font on the word Hannah seems like it should be for a movie made in 1978 but set in the distant future of 2004.

I also made a statement about Duncan Jones using a certain text-speak for "laughing out loud" and my commenty comment got banned-ed.

Saaad face.

Please let this be a good Eric Bana movie. I'm tired of my #1 freebie getting relegated to crap. Why isn't he more famous? and more naked?

Posted by: Figgy at January 27, 2011 12:32 AM

Bless, figgy, I'm right behind you on that one. Unless he appears in person, in which case I am kilometres ahead, sprinting merrily into his unsuspecting arms.

Yeah, it doesn't seem at all appropriate that the contributors can use language the commenters can't. If a word's banned, it's banned. Across the board. Otherwise you're just playing with yourself.

Still, I ROFLMAO'd and can't wait to see The Source Code. Can we just fast forward about 10 years, when hopefully Jones has like 5 more movies under his belt? And then watch them all in one sitting? I'll bet gourmet pretzels are even better 10 years from now, too...

I want to see Hanna so bad it makes my toes curl.
