Anime Geek News …. Hey! Look at Those Gams!

I Just Needed an Excuse / Dustin Rowles

Trade News | December 2, 2008 | Comments (29)

Everybody is posting Tina Fey’s Vanity Fair pics this week, because why not. Girl is hummunna, hummuna even without the airbrushing, and the glossy polish of magazine veneer sure as hell doesn’t hurt. But, what’s a movie site gotta do to justify posting the Fey pics? Everyone else has already mined the one nugget of gold in the piece — the origins of her scar (a stranger slashed her face when she was 5), so I had to scour the nets to find an actual piece of trade news to supplement the pretty pictures. And, it just so happens that this news is right up geek alley.

Everybody loves Miyazaki Hayao (well, almost everyone — I can’t get into the damn films, hard as I try), and I suspect his animated films are the one exception where even the most ardent cinephiles are OK with English dubbing. (Right?) So, it may please many of you to know the roster of voice talent that’s been assembled for next year’s English dub of Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, about a 5-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. It’s a Japanese version of Little Mermaid, which will now get an English translation. So, it’s all full circle. That voice cast: Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin, Betty White, Frankie Jonas, Noah Cyrus and Cloris Leachman. Oh, and Tina Fey! And with that justification, here’s some pretty:

I loooooooooooooooove her legs, and I usually HATE legs, so go figure.

All this infringing on geek turf? Is Vermillion gonna have to cut a bitch?

Wait, Fey got that scar how? Uhhhhh...scratch that last statement.

Posted by: branded at December 2, 2008 2:32 PM

I want those red heels.

Posted by: Julie at December 2, 2008 2:35 PM

Noah Cyrus? There's another one? I want to see that slightly incestuous Vanity Fair photoshoot. Now with more homosexual undertones!

Posted by: Sabrina at December 2, 2008 2:37 PM

WOW! Another skinny white woman with a big head that Rowles considers hummunna, hummunna. Shocking!

Posted by: Pookie at December 2, 2008 2:37 PM

I covet those red heels.

(And in case you are wondering, Julie and I may actually be the same person. We're looking into it.)

Posted by: lizzieborden at December 2, 2008 2:43 PM

I read that as "ardent pedophiles" the first time, I think I need a little less L&O: SVU in my TV watching. Other than that I will be first in line when this hits our arthouse theater. They finally have Let the Right One In playing there and I know that I won't see the Twilight crowd anywhere near that theater.

Posted by: ChemicalCurt at December 2, 2008 2:47 PM

Hmm, so it looks like Noah Cyrus is female... and 8 years old...

Even better!

Posted by: Sabrina at December 2, 2008 2:49 PM

Yea...I will be waiting for this to come out on dvd so I can watch it in Japanese. Ever since my older sister told me that they change the stories and lines with English dubbing, I've only been able to watch Hayao Miyazaki's movies in Japanese.

Actually, it started with Sailor Moon when they changed Haruka and Michiru's lesbian relationship into a "cousins" thing. Plus I just like the sound of Japanese.

Subs > dubs.

That is all.

Posted by: Snath at December 2, 2008 3:00 PM

Fey's a stone fox. I'll bet she smells like Marlboro Lights...

Posted by: Skitz at December 2, 2008 3:02 PM

I demand that geek news are introduced by pics of Tina Fey from now on...
Anyway, usually I prefer subs rather than dubs, but I could give this English dubbing a chance, just because Tina Fey is in it.

Posted by: Radlum at December 2, 2008 3:08 PM

I don't usually give a shit about shoes, but those red shoes are hawt.

Tina Fey has a big head? Looks normal size to me.

Posted by: Slash at December 2, 2008 3:30 PM

Oh, Pookie. "Heigl is hot and sexy" but Tina Fey does nothing for you. What a world, what a world. Speaking of "skinny white women with a big heads", Heather Locklear is looking pretty good in bed with that random guy in that advertisement over there.

PS. I prefer subtitles.

Posted by: phquaryn at December 2, 2008 3:31 PM

I read that, "Porno on the Cliff by the Sea." They could dub it like, "What's up Tiger Lily?"

Posted by: BWeaves at December 2, 2008 3:46 PM

I know phquaryn, I can't explain it. There is something about Heigl that turns me on so much, but Tina just doesn't do it for me. I mean she's sexy and all, but she just don't do it for me. But who am I to talk, when I was younger I used to toss one over Angie Dickinson almost daily. That scene she did in the cab in Brian De Palma's "Dress to Kill" was my own personal Vietnam, I was never the same afterwards.

Posted by: Pookie at December 2, 2008 3:47 PM

I'm mostly psyched that another Miyazaki film is coming, and I too prefer watching them in Japanese (though Howl's had a lot more pizazz with its English voice actors than with its curiously sterile Japanese voice actors...meh.) But this should be pretty neat. Thanks for the heads up!

I alas have not had much experience with Tina Fey. I've never gotten around to watching 30 Rock and, forgive me, I somehow didn't get around to watching her Palin impression (I read some quotes, though. Well played, SNL staff!) but I respect the...uh, idea of her? Sounds good. Also, having you face slashed when you're five by some maniac sounds terrifying. Some people are seriously fucked up.

Well, back to Pharmaceutical work.

Posted by: vic at December 2, 2008 4:12 PM

Indeed, why are the satin pumps not on the friggin cover? You've got drum major Wonder Woman going on there and....that's what you pick?

What, you think Angie Dickinson's on the "unconventional" list? Sorry, but I've seen "Rio Bravo".

As I've said before, I have little experience with anime features, but I did think Billy Bob Thornton did a good job in "Princess Mononoke". I'm more disappointed by live-action dubbing but I can understand the concerns of course. But then...my favorite anime is probably that video someone made for "El Scorcho" some years ago.

No really, have you all seen it? Anyone know where it lives in the post YouTube world?

Posted by: Jay at December 2, 2008 4:24 PM

Back to English is full-circle? Wasn't The Little Mermaid written in Danish?

Posted by: Eep at December 2, 2008 4:42 PM

Daaaaammmnnn home girl has some hips... they covered them up almost too well in that little dress though.

Oh, and I am pumped for the new little mermaid story a la Miyazaki.

As a little girl I used to pretend in the tub that I was Arielle and re-enact the scene where she's singing and all that water comes up behind her..... yeah....

/pointless story

Posted by: Wormer at December 2, 2008 5:15 PM

Julie & lizzie, I want you to have those red heels.

Then feel free to take pictures of yourselves "modeling" them to post on the internets.

Sans clothing.

I have to go now. Something just came up.

Posted by: admin at December 2, 2008 5:29 PM

Pookie I understand. I felt the same way about Morgan Fairchild in The Seduction.

Posted by: richmac at December 2, 2008 6:29 PM

The worst English dubbed Ghibli film: Grave of Fireflies.
First, I watched the original version and got all giggly everytime the little girl spoke with her cute voice. Not long after, I watched the english dubbed version and couldnt even handle 20 minutes of it.

Posted by: Seraf at December 2, 2008 6:52 PM

Frankie Jonas as in... the Bonus Jonas? The other Jonas Brother?

Posted by: deena at December 2, 2008 8:10 PM

I'll watch anything by Miyazaki. The man makes the most gorgeous animated films.

I'm gonna go watch Spirited Away again. Though I do prefer the subtitled version.

That's an incredibly celeb voice cast! So many celebs in it. Wow.

I still believe Subs>dubs ... but looks at all those voices ....

And I still haven't seen Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. So strange - I'm both an anime fan and a Hayao fan (don't equate the two, they're somewhat mutually exclusive of each other). But I dunno why I haven't seen it ... just haven't. I guess I've been way out of the loop for the last half decade. But hearing this news makes me want to!

Posted by: Lydia at December 3, 2008 3:46 AM

Swoon over the heels all you want, ladies, but for my money you'd best heed three words that will never do you wrong:

Little. Black. Dress.

Posted by: bucdaddy at December 3, 2008 10:25 AM

WEAK, Rowles. Way to ruin the hottest mystery EVER. Not even a spoiler tag? WTF?
