Picture Dump: The Vanity Fair Comedy Issue Outtakes Are Pretty Fantastic

By Dustin Rowles | Trade News | December 20, 2012 | Comments ()

A few weeks ago, we showed you the three covers of the Vanity Fair comedy issue, and besides the fact that Megan Fox was on one of them, and it appeared that they were all from 2003, they were pretty neat. However, the covers were not nearly as cool as the outtakes, which are also decidedly old school and unfortunately still feature Megan Fox.

In another year or two, Megan Fox will be the new Charming Potato. I predict this, and I'm surprised more Pajibans haven't caught onto it sooner. She actually is pretty funny -- not in an obvious "I tell jokes and drop one liners" way, but she has a really wacky, irreverent sense of humor. It's really not too difficult for me to imagine her holding her own with this crowd. I don't think Diablo Cody and Judd Apatow are the types that would hire her for comedy and quirky roles if she had zero chops, you know? It may be fair to say that she doesn't always bring that to screen in the way that some other better actresses can, so that's a reasonable criticism. But it's not like she's a completely inexplicable void of funny, either.

I just truly and completely can't understand why Megan Fox is on this list. Can anyone explain it?

  • L.O.V.E.

Dustin, it appears your previously unwarranted disdain for Olivia Munn has been transferred to Megan Fox.

  • Erich

Is there anything better than that picture of Carl Reiner kissing Mel Brooks?

  • BendinIntheWind

AGAIN with Melissa McCarthy! Gurl: STOP listening to these art directors. Show up with a handful of cute cocktail dresses to every single photo shoot you are featured in. Make them work around it. Tell them to go screw. It can be funny without making you look like a fool.

  • Chriso

I'm pretty sure it's an homage to Lily Tomlin's character Edith Ann. She was a little girl with a perpetually stuffed-up sounding voice who sat in oversized furniture and had oversized props to make her seem tinier.

  • BendinIntheWind

I get the reference, it just bugs me that no one on that set saw the glaring irony of Melissa McCarthy, a woman who is pretty well-known for being NOT tiny, being surrounded by props to highlight her size.

  • Blake

Since no one else has said it. THAT is a fantastic photo of Mindy Kaling, Dakota Johnson, Aubrey Plaza and Zooey Deschanel.

    Dakota Johnson = WOW.

But why no contrast dress for Kaling?... Oh right.

  • Rebecca Hachmyer

IS that Zooey Deschanel?? And was that actually her in the surfing girl SNL bumper? This girl is a chameleon!

  • L.O.V.E.

    Hardly recognized Deschanel.

And that's Aubrey Plaza? Didn't know she had that in her.

  • Blake

That's because you're used to seeing her like this:

  • Blake

When she really looks like this:

*Plus her usual look of bitchy indifference has the same affect on me as redheads do = Total Kryptonite.

  • BWeaves

I'm so old that I don't know who half these people are, but I know who they are pretending to be. I suspect the young whippersnappers know who they are but not who they are pretending to be.

  • lowercase_ryan

Is Apatow's next project with Jim Carrey? Cause there's a ton of Jim Carrey in the pics on the vanity fair site.

  • lowercase_ryan

Preposterously mad Ben Stiller is the only Ben Stiller I can stomach.

  • Mrs. Julien

Who is the blond woman in the header photo?

  • CMooreVerdad

And why is she wearing a shirt and no pants?

  • Wapshin

Because she can. Oh how she can.

  • lowercase_ryan

Dakota Johnson. just looked it up.

  • lowercase_ryan

Wondered that too. First thought was Amanda Seyfried, but now I don't think so.

  • Theunis Stofberg

the issue's guest editor was Judd Apatow and he put her in his newest This is 40. I think...

  • Mrs. Julien

That photo of Jim Carrey as Ruth Buzzi is GOLD!

The picture of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner makes me want to watch The Sunshine Boys. EN-TER!

  • Three-nineteen

I am with you on both counts. And now we know why Melissa McCarthy was dressed like that on the cover - she was channeling Lily Tomlin. (They still should have dressed her better. And that's the truth - phfflbbt.)

  • Natallica

Old people bromance = cuteness overload

  • FrayedMachine

Why. why is megan fox there. Does anyone know this?

  • Bodhi

She is Judd Apatow's new movie. Which doesn't seem like a good enough reason to me

  • Quatermain

It's a good enough reason for me. As far as I'm concerned, Megan Fox can show up where ever she likes.

  • Bodhi

She has a great body, for sure. And she is pretty, but some of her previous faces were better, imo

  • FrayedMachine

Does she even have a speaking role? Or say more than four lines? I. I just don't understand.

  • lowercase_ryan

She's in her bra? That's all I got.
